Parents of the HS Class of 2014

@eyemamom - so sorry about your cat. And I totally understand about the other animals.

@spritle - congrats on a decision! and @cakeisgreat - how wonderful about Quinnipiac! One neighbor is a freshman in their OT program this year and loves the school and another is going next year!

DD and I had a really nice trip up to see St. Michael’s Sunday/Monday. They did a nice presentation for those accepted into the Honors Program and the faculty we encountered were wonderful. Unfortunately, she still can’t decide whether she likes Providence or St. Mike’s better! She did find a major at Providence that spoke to her - Health Policy and Management. Where I expected her to write off PC, that major was really interesting to her. So we wait and see what happens when we visit UMass Amherst on Friday and then wait for all the final (hopefully) acceptances to arrive in late March.

But tomorrow we’re going prom dress shopping with her BFF and her mom who is a close friend of mine so we’ll all catch up on all the news. Interesting timing as DD broke up with her BF this morning - wanted to do that before going dress shopping! She’s still going to her prom though!

@eyemamom-I am sorry about the kitty. I’ve only had mine a few months, but he’s such a character. You must be so sad.

@akmom124 - Thanks and glad to know that the folks around you love QU…that’s what we keep hearing from people around us as well. When we hear of someone attending, they always say…“and she/he LOVES it!” Glad to see that you also had a really nice trip to see St. Michael’s. HP & M major sounds interesting @ Providence. Love to hear your thoughts on UMass - we’ll be going in summer for D2!

…And we just did prom shopping with the BFF/mom friend. Such a bittersweet moment. They/We have done so much together but they will be attending separate colleges (most likely). Sigh

@eyemamom - sorry to hear about your kitty. Ours will be 10 in April and he is slowing down a bit. It’s amazing how attached we become to our furry friends.

D had another snow day today which resulted in a 5 day weekend. I don’t think she has had a full week of school yet this year. Taxes were finally filed and accepted. Now all I have to do is wait a couple of days and file the “revised” FAFSA with the 2013 tax section changed to Already Completed (filed). Then I can make all the copies for the IDOC submittal and I am done with all of the FA submittals that I am aware of. D already received her refund as did her older brother (2011). Both were processed within 10 days of submittal so the kids are happy they have some extra cash!

@eyeamom - I am sorry to here about your dear cat passing. My cat Cosmo passed away in November, he was19. I really miss him. I would love to get another cat but we have a dog ( a big Labradoodle) and most likely we will be relocating this summer ( hard too think of summer with all this snow).

@Spittle - congrats on the decision!

@Calla congrats on the writing award!

@ gertrudemcfuzz - exciting news - good luck to your D with the audition

@cakeisgreat - glad to hear about your D acceptances and the writing award - I have heard great things about Quin! The school was recommended to us but we never made it there to visit and needed to shorten the list. S applied to 11- I wish we had limited it to 6 but I wanted him to have options. My S is 50/50 at most of the schools he applied to -has the test scores but not the GPA so who knows how it will turn out. He has been accepted to his 3 safeties. (UVM,UNE, Clarkson) This Friday we are going to visit UVM - first visit.

My S was selected as a final candidate for a STEM Scholarship at UNE and had an interview yesterday that he said went well. He already has an 18k - presidential scholarship from UNE and this one is worth 10k per yr. ( total tuition is around 32k) He just applied to the honors program at Clarkson and I heard that they give good merit aid so we’ll see…

DS and DH went to MA today and never made it home to ME. DS had a meeting with his preceptor today for his STP ( summer transition project) in Westborough MA - we were going to reschedule due to the snow but we thought that it wouldn’t be “too bad” during the day…the drive was fine going down but in 4 1/2 hrs they only made it to Portsmouth NH-normally it takes about an hr to get from Westborough to Portsmouth, NH. DH finally gave it up and pulled off and found a place to stay. Basically, they were in the height of the storm the whole time as it moved north. I tried several times to get them to pull off but DH really wanted to get home. I was feeling a little guilty because I was suppose to go with S and we had planned to stay in Providence but I was not feeling well and asked DH to take him. If I was in that situation - I would have called a friend and spent the night at their house or stayed at a hotel in Westborough. I am a total wimp and hate driving in bad weather. My DH drives in all kinds weather so it must have been really bad! …well at least they are safe and when I spoke with DH he seemed relieved to be off the road - the good news is the hotel was attached to a restaurant & bar…I am sure DH has a couple of beers with his dinner ; >

Eyemamom - really sorry to hear about your cat. We’re animal lovers here too and it always leaves a big hole empty when they pass on. Take care. <<<>>>

Otherwise, we’re with the snow day group. I have no idea how long we’ll go into June or if Saturdays will become a viable option. Yesterday it was just a two hour delay. We’ve had tons of those too.

Youngest is REALLY looking forward to being in FL this time next year. We might be there with him… at least for Feb. ;)

eyemamom: So sorry about your beloved cat.

Congrats to those whose sons and daughters have narrowed their college choices!

Son '14 is still feeling the effects of the flu nearly two weeks later. He’s on some heavy duty meds which make him a little more out of it (than usual!). And disaster struck because he cannot get a decent night’s sleep. He finally got back to school yesterday (after a five-day weekend because of snow and the holiday) and forgot to bring his AP Stats project that he had worked on all weekend! If he had come downstairs to see me, I could have left school (someone would have covered for me) and gone home for it. But he didn’t. When he spoke with the teacher, he said he could e-mail it when he got home from school and track practice. She said little to him about accepting it, but he figured he would e-mail it anyway with the words that he understood if she chose not to accept it and gave him a zero. Well, she e-mailed back long after he went to bed and said she would accept his work with a loss of points because he was late. Saying in his e-mail that he would stand by any decision she made without complaining probably made an impression on her. He is not the type of kid who whines, “It’s not fair.” His maturity over the situation probably helped. He is known for standing by a teacher’s decision. Last year, he took the BC final not knowing if the score would help him finish the year with an A. He got a 100 on the final, but missed an A by less than a half a point. The teacher called him out into the hall and told him that her policy was not to round up an average. He told her it was okay … and added that he knew he had a 5 on the AP exam, and that was most important. The upshot: she has written him some outstanding letters of recommendation for college this year, too,

So being kind does produce good things!

@eyemamom I’m so sorry to hear about your cat. It’ definitely tough when our furry children pass.
@glido I’m getting tired of it. I just chant the same mantra- The last schools he’s waiting to hear from don’t release decisions until late March.

In the meantime, I’m heads down on grad school work. 4 weeks from now I’ll be done.

Oh, and yesterday- promotion, bonus, raise! <rim shot=""> So I expect my EFC will raise considerably for the 2015-16 academic year, but I’ll actually be able to afford it. </rim>

@2016barnardmom CONGRATULATIONS!!! :D/

@barnardmom Congratulations.
@eyemamom sorry about your cat. I can still remember losing ours even though it was a decade ago.
@sprittle I think you owe us a round on the USS Indecision! It feels great to have a direction.

DS got a phone call from his #2 school last night. They’re making it difficult for him to stick with his #1. We haven’t deposited yet, waiting on final numbers, but every time we think it’s decided he gets another phone call. I’m just glad they’re showing interest in him.

@spritle - congratulations on S’s decision!

@ cakeisgreat - Sounds like you are next in line to buy drinks on the USS Indecision!

@onlyonemom - congratulations to S for being selected as a scholarship finalist! Good luck!!

@momreads - it sounds like S is very mature. I agree that teachers respect a student who is forthright and who readily accepts the consequences of their actions.

@ Barnardmom - Way to go!!! That is wonderful news!

So it sounds like a lot of prom dress shopping is going on. When are these proms? Our HS prom isn’t until late Spring.

@2016BarnardMom - yippeee and Congratulations!

We went from a 2 hr delay yesterday to 56 degrees! I’m hoping this warm up is here to stay!

Prom for my d is in mid-April. We’ll be going next week to shop. It’s the earliest it’s ever been, usually it’s mid May, but they changed venues last year, didn’t like it and I’m guessing the other place filled up.

@AvonHSDad - finally received all the necessary tax docs and submitted return last Friday, so need to send corrected CSS Profiles and IDOC. This is all new to us, but hoping to get started today, and would welcome any advice you may have on the process.

@onlyonemom - Congratulations on your DS’s presidential scholarship and candidacy for the STEM scholarship! So glad your DH decided to ride the rest of the storm in a hotel.

@momreads - very impressed with your son! No doubt he will go far in life!

@2016BarnardMom - Woo Hoo!! Congratulations!! So wonderful to hear all your hard work is paying off!

@smakl70 - so nice to have a school fighting to win your DS’s commitment.

Our HS prom isn’t until late Spring too. Been thinking though we probably need to get going on the dress shopping.

The saga goes on…DH and DS are on their way home …I forgot to say that yesterday I insisted they take my new Honda CR-V ( 3 months old) …my windshield is cracked! Ugh…why didn’t I just let them take the 2004 Vue…
Now to get it fixed ! ok I will stop whining and…

Congratulate @2016BarnardMom - way to go!

@Momreads - your son sounds very mature - I would have whined!

I need to get to work…working from home today and procrastinating !

Thanks @spritle and @chrysanthMum and @overtheedge – since he didn’t make the priority cut for Northeastern he might have to wait until April 1. If he does get in he might still qualify for the NMF scholarship (30K, nothing to sneeze at!) and honors program. But it may be that he was on the edge and they wanted to see his midyear report, which is not impressive. Hmm, they should have received that by now. Fortunately, he has places and $$ at other schools already. None that he feels good about though. I’m jealous of @spritle too !

@onlyonrmom–Re: windshield glass replacement. The one time I dealt with this, the glass was replaced on my driveway. One of the easier auto repair transactions! Worth inquiring if that may be an option, once your car is home.

@onlyonemom, like CT1417 they came out to us - twice - to fix windshields. And our insurance covered it both times after a low deductible. Insurance companies understand debris on the roads. It didn’t affect our rates.

Sorry about your windshield @onlyonemom.

Our insurance (Geico) also cover windshield (with deductible, of course).

@eyemamom I am sorry to hear about your kitty. I know our dogs are always like family members. Our school counselors definitely recognize the passing of a pet as a major point of concern for our students. We get a care notice if the counselor has heard.

It is exciting to hear of all the NMFs! Congratulations!

And special congratulations to @2016BarnardMom! Great timing on the raise/promotion!

We currently have spring. Went from negatives and single digits to the 60°s! NOW they are talking about tornados possible tonight or tomorrow! Can’t anyone in the country get a break on weather???

Thanks everyone…the issue about the windshield is that we are leaving for Vermont tomorrow and wanted to take my new car! The dealership we bought it from is allowing us to drop of the car to them and they are giving us a loner -SUV.
I just wasn’t up to taking the 10 yr old car to Vermont.
