Parents of the HS Class of 2014

24 days to go until the last Friday in the month (28th) when most announcements will be released. Make that 27 days if you have to wait until the 31st or even longer if its snail mail only!

SS Indecision has started load out of stores for the April cruise. The first pallets of adult bevarages were loaded earler today. Other non-perishables will be loaded this week and next. Frozen items starting the 17th and fresh foods and perishables on the 28th. Glad the important stuff is loaded first!

We were lucky, lucky that D applied to a number of colleges EA. She’s heard from all and gotten great merit aid from everyone she needed it from. Now we are waiting for California public universities. We are off to admitted students days etc, my problem is I just have no idea when and how this kid is going to choose a college. She shows no sign of selecting THE one. Hopefully after the UC’s send out admissions decisions she will make up her mind. I’m guessing midnight April 30 and several housing deposits later…sigh.

I’ll probably have as hard a time deciding which adult beverage to indulge in as DD will have choosing a final landing spot!

So we had given up on hearing anything from S14’s super safety because they seemed to have lost parts of his application and never responded to any more of his emails. Today he got an email inviting him to apply to their honors college. Does this mean he’s been admitted? He hasn’t received anything from them indicating he has. Perhaps we’ll get something from them soon? Who knows. He’s pretty sure he won’t go there, but we did discuss that if they gave him a full ride, he might consider it.

Finals would have been next week but they’ve been postponed a week due to snow days. All the juniors in Michigan took the ACT yesterday so the other high schoolers didn’t have school. He was really glad to not be in their shoes again!

Thanks, AvonHSDad! Last time (D HS’11) it was truly indecision; this time, we’ll be grateful to get to be on the boat. I know, I know, it will all work out in the end, but The Black Cloud of Stress and Remorse for Things Undone hangs heavy over the household. Counting down the days.

Re) question that overtheedge and collegetime18 asked about tuition exchange. What the posters answered may have answered their particular questions in their area.

Depending on what state they are in and what the names of various programs are - like WI and MN have some sort of state college exchange program (you have to apply and be approved; my WI niece attended a MN state college).

I live in AL and have known of students that have used the common market college program. Academic Common Market - Southern Regional Education Board

Sometimes you can find a very specific program at an OOS school that will fall under the common market program. It is a very limited program IMO, because your state cannot offer that specific degree anywhere. But it is possible.

Captain, thank you for updating us on the SS Indecision snacks and libations. I was wondering, are there any massage therapists booked? I will need a long one after this journey!

@SOSConcern - Thanks for the info! This is fascinating and close to what I envisioned when I heard the term “tuition exchange.” I live in one of the participating states and I have never heard of this program! I’d bet money our GCs have never heard of it either.

@AvonHSDad - glad you seem to be supervising the loading of the SS Indecision! We need to be certain there are sufficient quantities of champagne! Maybe we can have a pre-launch cocktail party to take the edge off the waiting?

@go2mom - I’ll be in line right behind you! Between the stress of this whole process and spending my time huddled from the cold, I really need a massage! And a hot tub! And a nice drink with an umbrella :)

@overtheedge - There is something called the Western University Exchange (WUE) for western states. I believe that schools from California, Washington, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Wyoming, Idaho, Colorado, Montana, and maybe others participate. Schools on the list offer reduced tuition (150% of in state) to students for states in the exchange. You have to apply for the discount; it is not automatic. Google WUE to find the information and lists.

AvonHSDad - you’re killin’ me! I will try to embark early. I will see you on the Lido deck!

It wouldn’t be a first class cruise without a top notch and fully staffed spa would it? Don’t worry. We have planned for all types of requests and should be able to accomdate them.

The first deliveries included 400 cases of Champagne. It’s all in the large storage coolers below deck waiting for sailaway celebrations and for the big toasts when the DECISIONS are made!

Long time lurker here… S had a lot of happy news before Christmas, applied 8 places EA, accepted 7 all with merit aid, deferred at one, waiting for that and two more publics. He’s leaning to the school that is the lowest cost for us, but is refusing to visit/revisit any other places he got into or go to any accepted days. Also, he’s come down with a case of senioritis, as he’s “done” in his mind. Trying to get him to keep up the grades is so hard!
Congrats to all with good news, good luck to those who still waiting!

@vvs2010 Senioritis seems to be thriving here too. The seniors are counting down the weeks until they are done (they are done 2 weeks before everyone else so no finals). He seems to only care about Calculus at this point which is great, but the other classes would like some love too!

@AvonHSDad - thanks Captain! That should be enough champagne:). Sounds like it will be a marvelous cruise!

@smakl70 - same here except my D has narrowed the classes she cares about to AP Lit. She has been sick a lot this winter and is behind in her make-up work. I am beginning to stress more about that and keeping up grades than college admissions and finances!

overtheedge I found out about acad common market two ways - I had previously worked at a local univ with a colleague that was in charge of career planning and placement - her sons were quite a bit older than my children, and she had used the acad common market southern region for her older son who went into a very specific architect program that VaTech offered (Auburn is the architect program in AL but it did not have that specific ‘major’). Her son successfully completed and it was great. Several years ago, one of the articles in the U.S. News Best Colleges had an article about these ‘exchange’ programs. A second student I know that used the acad common market program was during a college tour at Auburn I was talking to another parent; older DD wanted to go into the forensic biology program which is not offered in AL but is at Ol’ Miss - once she was at the school she decided to go into something else, but I do not remember if she then switched schools or stayed.

I know there is a string of colleges that have employees receiving discounts for their children going to other colleges in their ‘network’.

Heard on the radio today (public radio news this morning) about some stats with percentages of students getting accepted to their ‘dream school’ and only a portion ending up attending there. I imagine it will be out in the news somewhere else.

In our household, we very much limited the application process - older DD wanted to apply to a large state school - state where H and I grew up and she had gone to summer music; more for ‘prestige’ of unique and very OOS among classmates. DD understood when we pointed out OOS rates and not cost effective.

Knowing and understanding merit scholarships at various schools and final costs is very helpful.

Thanks to AvonHSDad for doing all the preparatory work. If my S gets into his favorite reach, we will likely not join the group on the SS Indecision, but if he doesn’t get in there, we will probably need to not only board but to stay until the very end.

That information is also in today’s Chronicle of Higher Ed. 76% of students are admitted to their first choice, but only 57% enroll at their first choice. 60% of those who did’t attend the first choice cited finances as the reason.

Congrats vvs2010!

Hi parents, sorry for crashing the thread.
I always follow your posts and I know that one of you has a super happy Kenyon '18 student. However, I cannot remember the username. I would love to contact him/her/you, hence it would be lovely if you could help me  Thanks!
