Parents of the HS Class of 2014

Mom of a '12 and '15 popping in to say hi, and…

I loved loved loved the book she wrote, it made me laugh out loud and i read it right around this time of year in 2012…

http://theneuroticparent.com/

Thanks for the smile, OHMomof2 . I have been made to feel like an unworthy slacker because we never did test prep courses or college counseling – nice to see those type A folks being ridiculed!

@OHMomof2 - I will have to read the book!

@AmericanHopee - I have a Kenyon hopeful (RD haven’t heard yet), I think 5boys has a S who was admitted ED to class of 18’.

@Austinareadad Those of us who already know where our offspring are headed get to go on the cruise - we’re the ones who will be serving the drinks, etc. ;)

Jealous, @creekland!

A reminder that the acceptances list is here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ZxUwgbCqcCpq4L_2L4lAhqcKQAN0AyGHDAjf1rDX9rI/edit?usp=sharing

Obviously, people are starting to make decisions. What do you think about the idea of indicating the school that actually will be attended by italicizing it (the name of the chosen school by student name in the top list, and the name of the student by the chosen school in the bottom list)? Or does is there another list somewhere?

I like the idea of italics. I’ve updated my guy’s even though it’s kind of obvious for him (since he only applied to the one school).

Little party for myself today. DRT worked with only one hitch–had to remove the hyphen from my last name. I am officially done with this d’s FAFSA (it takes so little to make me happy anymore).

While S14 hasn’t been “officially accepted”, he has received an invitation to the Chancellor’s Reception for Top Applicants at UC Santa Barbara and a phone call from a professor at UC San Diego welcoming him as an admitted student. We will attend the UC Santa Barbara reception this Sunday in San Jose. S11 and I attended this same reception 3 years ago and formally learned of his acceptance at that time. Exciting times for us all!

@Minnymom just wondering if your S14 is a URM. The UCSD admit thread says those calls are only going out to URMs. Thanks!

I am wistfully reading of those invited to UC Chancellor receptions. DS did not get any invitations. I am anxiously awaiting the UC results.

@collegetime18 yes,S14 is URM. I have heard the same thing.

Any of your kids looking at going Greek? My d is going to the deep south and if you think this college thing is insane you should take a look at the hoops required to go through recruitment!

@calla1 I’m with you. I feel that way when I hear about those getting likely letters from the private schools. Happy for them, but it makes me nervous for my S’s chances.

@eyemamom–just when you thought LORs were behind you….

I have heard that southern schools take rush very seriously. I don’t like fall rush b/c of the immediate distraction of acclimating to college, but a lot of schools have fall rush. Good luck to her–and you with the shopping and LORs.

@minnymom - congrats on S14’s acceptance and invitation to Chancellors Reception.

I hope the rest of you awaiting Chancellor’s invitations receive good news soon!

@eyemamom- I live in the Deep South, and yes, it is an insane process at many schools. I’m not sure D would be in to it if she ends up at her in-state, but she will likely rush if she goes to a LAC.

Her school (auburn) does recruitment a week before classes start. Kind of puts her in a bind since she really doesn’t know if she wants to be in one or not, but is wanting to look. After checking it out, and picking myself up off the floor in shock, she and I talked about it and agree better to give it a whirl and see for herself. And, we’ve managed to track down 16 out of the 17. I’m on the hunt now for AGD - lol She’s not one to get all in a tizzy over it but I can see how it could really throw some girls for a loop if things don’t work at as hoped for them.

@eyemamom - a lot of the large state Us rush the week before or first week of school, which I think is crazy. If you already have 16/17 LORs you are doing well. Somehow, despite the absurdity of the process, it usually works out. And most of the houses are so large it’s easy to find some kindred souls. It is helpful, especially being out of state, to attend as many summer pre-rush events as possible. I wish her luck!

Wait, I was Greek at Northwestern in the Dark Ages (AGD actually) and I’ve never heard of these LORs. Maybe a scroll (or region) specific thing? Or instituted since my time? I admit to not keeping up with rush requirements lol.

@2014novamom—definitely regional, but moving to nationwide, I think. I recall when our rush chair would realize she had forgotten to read one during decisions. We really did not know what to make of LORs either, but friends with Ds rushing now have been tracking them down, even for non-southern schools.

If you were to check your sorority’s national website, you will find a LOR form.

@2014novamom - we are sisters  They are used more in the south and a handful of big greek systems (Indiana) in the north. It used to be published in the Quarterly but it is online now.
@eyemamom - I sent you a private message.
