Parents of the HS Class of 2014

Congrats to all the newest Polar Bears from a Bowdoin Mom of '17.

Not sure how often bowdoin kids get off campus, but Portland is a great, interesting city only 30 mins away. That was one of the reasons bowdoin stayed on my S1’s list that only had one other LAC on it, as opposed to bates and Colby that came off bc they felt too remote for him & he didn’t like the towns nearby.

One thing’s for sure mrspepper, he’d get an amazing education there. Congrats on the acceptance…no easy feat!

@petraelise, I got a chuckle reading about no smartphones and no ipad etc. I donated money to D14’s Robotics team instead of paying for a smartphone and an iPad. Her close friends in the robotics team come from mixed background. It makes me sad and mad at the same time when great kids are not supported by their parents. Kids are like plants, they need the support. Except in rare situations, they don’t grow on their own.

@crowlady, thank you for your support.

Bowdoin students have access to Zip Cars so that may be one way to visit Portland.

@overtheedge I love your comment about how any number of CC regulars could be standing right next to each other on a college tour, etc. and not even know it.

I love reading this thread. Have rarely posted (except for a plea a couple of months ago requesting that on May 1 everyone finally reveal the names of the colleges that they’ve been alluding to all this time). My wife and son will also be at the Tulane ‘Top Scholars’ thing this coming weekend. Who knows who they’ll bump into? Who knows if they’ll know?

I’ve been reading lately but haven’t had time to post! @moonmaid - hope Tulane works out for you! Kudos to kids learning to tip at restaurants! I’ve always made sure my kids did this and had enough money when they went out to cover their expenses for the meal plus a tip. And what a great story about helping out a student with dorm furnishings when they can’t afford it. Kind of like the kids backpack projects they have around here in August before younger kids go back to school.

We’re in the midst of tech week for the musical my DD’14 is directing. Today I think she had 6 hours of school and 8 hours of rehearsals for various things (school play, singing group, and her show). Homework was being started at 10! We’ve negotiated that she will get to bed by 11, wake up at normal time and go into school late. That may give her the time she needs to do more homework, write her director’s note for the program and (maybe?!) do the scholarship essay that needs to be in by March 15th! Of course, it’s the same essay I wanted her to try to do over February vacation! She basically needs to tweak one she’s already written but couldn’t think straight when she attempted it Sunday night (after 8 hours of rehearsal) so now it’s getting close to the wire.

Luckily the show seems to be getting better each rehearsal. Just hoping we can keep the kids healthy! The little ones are really cute, the older ones step it up when necessary (like when half the cast didn’t come on stage for one number and the guy who was supposed to be singing a duet with his “wife” just sang the whole song when she never showed up!) The littlest ones are going to steal the show anyway!

All of this is keeping her mind off of waiting for the decisions yet to come and the financial aid info from Smith to see if her early write acceptance is meaningful. Although she did receive a t-shirt in the mail from them yesterday. That was a really nice touch - but a nice merit scholarship would be even nicer! I think I really hate this waiting more than she does as she’s too busy to think about it!

Sign me up for a nice cruise in April - I’d love a balcony room with a really comfortable lounge chair and special drinks!

@Dadinator – what a lovely thing to say – thank you for the smile

@AsleepAtTheWheel - You’ll have to post more often! Careful though - this thread is addictive! You may find yourself checking it before work, at lunchtime and the wee hours of the night if you’re an insomniac like me. This thread is like chatting over coffee with your friends. It’s devoid of the heated (and sometimes acrimonious) exchanges on the controversial topic threads. And, far more interesting than the umpteen “Chance Me for HYPM” threads from the anxious perfect stats kids who somehow haven’t figured out that unless they have a big hook or are a URM, they have the same < 8% chance as the other posters.

It sounds like several of you are headed to Tulane. I hope you have a great trip! Maybe you should wear little “CC” stickers to identify yourselves.

@akmom124 - I hope your D gets a generous scholarship from Smith!

Another snow day for D! It’s currently a near whiteout here today. It was near 50 yesterday afternoon and is supposed to get back in the high 40’s on Friday and the weekend. I hope this is the last of the winter storms. I can’t wait for the SS Indecision to sail.

It looks like we will be able to fly to Philadelphia as planned on Friday for an EA accepted students weekend but we will be chasing this storm. Why wasn’t I more aggressive in suggesting that she apply to that Florida school ?!?!?!?!?!?

D accepted to Temple / Boyer School of Music - full tuition, $4000 enrichment stipend each summer. Sooooo happy!!
Now it will be a fist-fight between Temple and CSU Long Beach, where she had her successful audition this past weekend. Either way, I’m thrilled.

Congrats, @GertrudeMcfuzz !

Great news! Congratulations to your D! Now she has to decide which side of the country she wants to spend her next four year at for college.

Congrats to everyone on great news, acceptances and decisions. I haven’t posted in a while, but have been in to check on you all from time to time, and great to see so many things moving along.
Since S14’s ED acceptance he has totally turned off the college switch. As in doesnt want to talk about it at all, and just wants to focus on the last few months of HS. Of course its all I can think about, the empty nest and the changes for him too that are coming up. But I refrain from those topics, since I sense a little bit of nerves about what lies ahead. Plenty of time to tackle that over the summer, I suppose.
@AvonHSdad is it ok to ask what college in Philly you are visiting? Maybe I missed it when you mentioned the name, or if you dont want to share just yet, thats perfectly fine too.

@GertrudeMcFuzz Congratulations! That is so cool!!

Wow,such wonderful updates!

Congrats to NewhavenCtMom for all your d’s terrific possibilities. sounds like it may end up being hard to decide.
Congrats to GertrudeMcfuzz!

Congrats to all!

@AvonHSDad - yep, and it will be interesting to see which side of the country she chooses. I predict she will opt for the closer to home option (Long Beach), but it could still go the other way. Temple’s offer is really spectacular, with $4000 each of 3 summers to do just about anything with, guaranteed on-campus housing for 4 years, a campus in Rome at same tuition as Philly (so $0) for her & a fantastic school of music & one of the coolest cities in the US. Not sure, actually, why the Temple deal hasn’t gotten more attention on CC. It is fairly new, but it is guaranteed for certain GPA and stats. Here’s the link for anyone who’s interested… http://admissions.temple.edu/sites/admissions/files/uploads/188_1213_scholarship_info_sheet_sl_2014FINAL.pdf

Woo hoo!! @GertrudeMcFuzz. Congratulations!! So wonderful to have several good choices!

Congrats @gertrudemcfuzz!

We have been discussing at home why, even though it is relatively new, this Temple scholarship program isn’t more well known.

In addition to what you mentioned, you also automatically get into the Honors Program, with honors housing, priority registration for classes, etc.

It’s a great deal.

Congrats GertrudeMcF!! What cool news!

@GertrudeMcFuzz - just looked at your link. Wow, what a great deal that is - wish we had looked at Temple! What great choices your D has earned for herself!
