Parents of the HS Class of 2014

UC Berkeley and I think USC (SoCal) have also Spring Admit. Students can enroll at a community college or in the case of UC Berkeley (UC Extension) and then officially enter the university in the spring.

@eymamom we’ve visited several schools that offer honors math sequences like that, but it hasn’t been enough to be a deciding factor here.

Mid-year acceptance: I thought this was fairly common! I was accepted as a “Second Semester Freshman” to Colgate (back in the day) and my brother was accepted the same way to Wesleyan.

It was fine for me, school-wise (I didn’t feel as though I’d missed anything crucial) but I can’t say that empty fall semester was a great experience. Both my brother and I took courses at the local CC which we hated, and worked, and lived at home. It was VERY boring and isolated because our friends were all away at college. I did not have a fun or productive time…

Welcome @staceyneil.

Several colleges do the spring admit thing. I know kids who got them at Whitman and Franklin and Marshall, as well as USC. I think emotionally it was hard on them to wait. The Whitman kid took a barista job for a semester; the F&M kid was very disappointed. It was his top choice. Somehow he showed the love and got off the waitlist for a fall entrance. He has been very happy there. Not sure if the social experience would have been the same.

I can see a spring admit being a good thing for students who want to work and save money and get a class or two out of the way. It would definitely be a deal breaker for Spygirl, who isn’t big on down time.

@eyemamom, in addition to 21% interest, your children got the best lesson in personal finance.

I sure hope. I told them I’d put their account number and location in my will - lol We also have a upromise account - not sure if any of you did that. You can attach a lot of different kinds of purchases to your 529. Again, since we own a business where we have delivery vans driving 7 days a week we attached our exxon card - a penny a gallon. We also use a upromise credit card for all business purchases. The kids have gotten thousands of dollars over the years into their 529’s. We plan on keeping it going and just changing the beneficiaries when they have their own children.

I just remembered recently that I had opened a upromise account…it has $15 dollars in it. Maybe that will buy D14 a couple of notebooks…

I forgot about Upromise. Thanks @eyemamom for reminding us. Now I need to find my username and password for Upromise.

I’d forgotten about Upromise too. I remember trying to link things way back when, but few ever seemed to work. Nonetheless, I just logged in and we have $55… Since this is my youngest heading off, I might as well request it at some point. Maybe it’ll buy a cheap book?

I’m the OP of this thread. Sorry for not being engaged for so long. I faded to the background after my anonymity (and by extension those of my kids) was blown.

It is wonderful to see our four year journey coming to the current celebratory phase! Big congrats to all who have acceptances/scholarships in hand. For those still waiting, hang in there. You will have good news soon because you care.

As for my S’14, praise the Lord, he has been accepted to some great places, including top 20 unis. What I learned from these forums really helped me navigate my family through this convoluted and nerve-wracking process. I wish I had contributed to this thread more, but it was prudent for me to stay under the radar.

@PaperChaserPop…nice to know you’re still out & about!

Our Upromise rolled right into the state-sponsored 529 account. I liked that. I’m not a big enough spender to make it work, though. I suppose we picked up a few hundred dollars over the years.

Thanks everyone for the feedback on the mid-year/Spring semester admit. I starting looking at the website for mid-years -Brandeis offers Mid years options aboard, Italy or England and another option in DC… One of my staff is a fairly new grad from Brandeis and she said that the “mid-years” are a tight group. She said that they also get nice housing in the Upper class-men dorms - they replace the juniors who are off studying abroad. Apparently, they get a roommate that is also a mid-year or other mid- years are on the same floor -near by…S is a Neuroscience major so he would need to take science classes in the summer or fall - but that shouldn’t be too much of a problem…lots to think about …it might be a nice break…he has until May to make a decision…FA will play a big role…All Aboard!

Congratulations BarnardMom!! I am so happy for you! Have a fabulous (and restful) weekend celebrating with Barnardgirl! You’ve earned it!

@Agentninetynine - Fat envelopes are so exciting! Congratulations to you and Spygirl!

Maybe someone’s S will tutor my D in math? I’m reading your math posts and… Wow! D is a rock star when it comes to English and History, but she’ll find any excuse to avoid math. No BC Calc for her!

@Staceyneil - Welcome! I was also accepted for Spring semester at Wesleyan. Until your post, I had never heard of that happening to anyone else. I assumed it was because I was 16 at the time and they wanted me to be a little older. I chose another school because I didn’t think anyone else would be starting in Spring. Interesting.

I know there are definitely schools that do spring admits. I think it’s to fill in for the kids who go do semester abroad. Sometimes school offer fall trips for these kids. My sons school offered a trip to Italy as a group. I know Univ of MD and Clemson both offer spring start. I’m kind of iffy on that - I don’t know if my kids would be willing to be left behind while everyone else went off to school. But if it’s your dream school, I could see waiting may not be a huge deal overall.

@overthehedge - I dropped my son on his head when he was a baby, it’s how I explain how he came to be so good at math.

@eyemamom - LMAO

Both of my boys would have been THRILLED with a spring admit… in fact my DS12 applied directly to the Feb’s program at MIddlebury. I had my doubts about it. I felt that it would be hard to jump in 2nd semster after everyone had already formed tight friend groups. My DS’s really good friends are all from his freshman dorm after they all bonded the first week of orientation. I think my boys idea of a gap YEAR makes more sense. Although it is a LONG year… 15-16 months, and there is down time. It is also a little weird to say good-bye to all your friends in August, but the trade-ff was a no brainer to my kids.

@PaperChaserPop - Congratulations to your Son’14 on all his acceptances, and best wishes during the decision making process and days that lie ahead! Thank you for starting this thread - it has been a wonderful place to come and share in the good times and not-so-good times.

Notifications are really starting to heat up! S14 got two acceptances today! UC Davis and UC Irvine. He now has 5 acceptances and 1 rejection (not dwelling on that though!) We are waiting for the Big Three- UC Berkeley, UCLA, and USC. Fingers crossed over the next couple of weeks, but really thrilled with choices already available to him.
He finished 3rd term finals today and is enjoying pizza with friends. So proud of our kids. :x
