Parents of the HS Class of 2014

It is SO exciting to read about decisions being made. What a great group of parents and an incredible group of kids. Congrats.

Although my S is drifting towards a decision, we still have three college visits within a week, ending April 21. So we’re sailing on the Indecision Cruise until then.

Any Amherst waitlists? Did you get the “error” email?

Congratulations@momfwon!

Yay for @momofwon

D14 will be on a whirlwind tour next week visiting 3 schools, most likely choosing one of them. I’m making her a list of things to consider. Crazy not going with her? Just a bit, but she will have a family friend with her for two of the tours.

TitanAPBioTchr too funny. Right there with you. Couldn’t possibly Captain the SS
Indecision cause we would never be able decide when to leave or what direction to sail. I fear we will be passengers right up to the last port of call.

Congratulations Momofwon! My nephew graduated from Syracuse ! He really loved the school.

Congrats on Syracuse!

We’ve taken Dartmouth off the list. They expect us to pay $55k/year x 2. Somehow that makes me think USC at $39k is a steal (scholarship $$). I’m losing perspective. Lol. But fact is that’s a ton of $$ for 2 kids at once. Can not lose perspective.

We are at a university right now for addl scholarship interviews. They paid for the trip and even got us tix to see a theater prodn on campus since my D’s want to dbl major in science and theater. If we get even more scholarships $$, & things go well today/tonight here, we may be a lot closer to a decision. Otherwise we will be scrambling to do cross country visits.

Well one D is sal. 2nd D is 3 or 4. They don’t weight GPAs. My Ds took 2 more APs than the val, but those are the rules and we wouldn’t change the coursework just to get the title. They are doing away w the titles starting next year. I agree w the decision. It’s often splitting hairs. And anyway, the lowest grade my Ds get is in chorus… Hilarious bc singing is their thing and the chorus teacher is one of their closest mentors. We adore her.

D’s were asked to sing a duet at graduation. They get to choose the song. Any suggestions?

@3tallblonds - are your girls planning on going to the same school? Would they separate? My d has two sets of twin friends - one set has always had separate interests and friends and are going to two different colleges - the other set are thick as thieves, applied and accepted to the same school ED and planning on rooming together. They’re also identical.

Last night we watched the Orientation Video online for Sewanee and I sobbed through the whole thing. Just thought y’all should know.

@3tallblonds - of course the duet that immediately leaps to mind is “For Good” from Wicked, but that may be as overdone in your area as it is here! My D is also going to audition to sing at graduation & she’s considering “Kiss Today Goodbye” from A Chorus Line (this will make all the parents cry) or possibly “On My Way” from Brother Bear, which is more upbeat & peppy. I think pretty much any song could become a duet.

Wow, so many great acceptances and scholarships. D went 7 for 7, so it makes us think we should have added some more reach schools. She is visiting two schools in the next 10 days and I hope it becomes more clear for her. Not to be upset at receiving merit aid, but one school with a COA of $60,000 offered her an achievement scholarship of $2100. Not sure what the point was, but it was removed from consideration…

@crewkid. I am not sure whether this is helpful. Last week we found out that one could negotiate the financial offers from private schools. My D got a full ride from one school and then she wrote to dean’s of two other schools [those haven’t given her financial support with the admission offer]. To our surprise one of the schools that she wrote to offered to match the financial aid. . This is for graduate school [Masters]. That could be true for undergraduate admissions as well.

Haven’t had a chance to get on CC for a couple of days, and a lot of catching up to do! Congrats to all on choices, scholarships, and FA!

So sad to hear about the freshman girl who died at your son’s school, @eyemamom. I had no idea how prevalent and cheap heroin has become. Very sad and scary how one try can take over one’s life! Definitely want to talk with my kids about this and forewarn them.

D received wonderful news with her FA packet from Pepperdine, informing her she had been awarded an additional scholarship. Together, the scholarships almost cover full tuition, which DH and I decided well warrants the travel expenses to attend accepted students’ reception. So, D and I are really looking forward to our trip to the west coast next week!

Captain, so glad to be aboard and have you at the helm! Love the itinerary!

@pamayawaa - Wishing you safe travels and welcome back home! I know after living overseas so long, it can be a bit of a culture shock and adjustment returning stateside, but wonderful you will be here when your daughter does her gap year and then starts school.

@my2sonsfromca - Film Production sounds like such a cool major!

@pageturner5 - it’s wonderful that you are there for your younger sister!

@AvonHSDad - Thanks so much for your advice concerning the Vandy waitlist. Did your S-2011 get off the waitlist there? D loves Vandy, and we do too. The net price calculator indicates FA would bring the costs into a manageable range (love Vandy’s no loan policy!). I will let her know how important it is to show strong interest by keeping the local Adcon updated on scholarships and awards of note. In the meanwhile, we will re-visit her accepted schools so she can make a commitment prior to the May 1st deadline. Pepperdine does appeal to her in many ways too, for which we are very thankful considering they have been so generous to her. I do think though that, for both her, DH’s, and my sanity’s sake, we will advise her to set a date NLT end-May/beginning of June at which time, she should take her name off the waiting list if she hasn’t been offered a spot. I just can’t imagine her being in limbo past mid-June, not knowing where she’ll be in the Fall.

@SoWest - Best wishes to your S14 on his scholarships and remaining interview!

@Classof2015 - Uhoh! My D has informed me on a couple of occasions that I have lipstick on my teeth - does that mean I’m getting old?! :(( Congrats to your S on getting in his dream school!

@staceyneil - Seems so wrong when some teachers fail to post grades for such an extended period! How are kids supposed to know what they’re doing wrong and need to work on? Seems to make no sense and, of course, they’re going to make the same mistakes, not realizing they’re solving the problem wrong. Actually, my friend’s son is a college freshman this year, and had an engineering professor who was not posting any grades right up to finals, so he had no idea where he stood (thank goodness, it worked out okay for him, but talk about unnecessary and preventable stress!).

@Overtheedge - So sorry to hear about your D’s health complications. Hope there will be a cancellation so she can get in to see the specialist sooner. Will keep both her and you in my prayers.

@ordinarylives - Congrats on your D’s scholarship and making the cheer squad!

@dadfor2014 and @MAC8993 - right there with you wanting less debt, not more!

@vvs2010 - I know it is scary thinking about your kid being so far away, and for us, it makes Vandy in Nashville (about 12 hours away) seem wonderfully close when we think our D may very well end up on the other coast. On the other hand, D loves the idea of somewhere completely new, where no one she knows is going. She also wants to study abroad. I have to remind myself that I was the same when I went off to college. My family was overseas, and I chose to go to Colorado (when none of us, other than my dad, had ever been off the east coast). I did end up transferring my sophomore year to a school in the same state as my grandparents. If they have their heart set on a school far away, if they find it wasn’t all they hoped for, it’s good for them to know transferring is an option.

@momreads - What a wonderful last track season your Son’14 is having!

Looking forward to the itinerary, Captain - I feel I still have so much to learn, and so good to have everyone’s company along the way!

Decision made: my son will be going to Berkeley! The choice became so clear when we visited today and he spoke to a professor in his field for over an hour. This is where he should be. Got the sweatshirt, so it’s really official! Good luck to everyone–getting to this point feels great!!!

Congratulations @collegetime18! Have a champagne toast!

Congratulations @collegetime18!

Congrats @collegetime18!

Wish I could say the same for DS, but that decision is nowhere in sight! He has 3 ASDs to attend in the next 2 weeks, so I am hoping that one of them will become a clear first choice.

Congrats @collegetime18 !!

It just dawned on me. If S14 picks Michigan, he already has a sweatshirt. Everybody has a Michigan shirt of some type- unless they are a Michigan State fan.

"@3tallblonds - of course the duet that immediately leaps to mind is “For Good” from Wicked, but that may be as overdone in your area as it is here!" That is the one that came to mind immediately for me. The teens love it.

Congrats @collegetime18! It’s celebration time!!
