Parents of the HS Class of 2014

@gertrudemcfuzz - So sorry to hear what is going on in your neck of the woods. And to think it may be arson… it’s hard to imagine anyone could be so cruel. If it is an arsonist, I pray that individual is found very quickly. Stay safe.

@2018dad - we haven’t heard from you recently. Are you okay? Please check in when you are able.

Lots of thoughts and prayers for you both, for safety for you and your homes. Isn’t @petraelise from that area also?

I’m in north east LA county, so not having any fires here, at the moment (and a few blocks from the hills, so somewhat less risky area even when we do have fires), but thank you for your concern @calla1‌, it is much appreciated. I have numerous friends who are right in the middle of it though. Hopefully tomorrow will be the last day of this hot, windy weather. But I agree, I think the west coast is going to have a very challenging fire season this year-- and with very little water resources to deal it.

I wish I could send some of our weather your way, 2018dad. It’s raining so heavily I know I’ll be soaked just walking to the train. Tomorrow (prom) is going to be non-stop rain.

eyemamom…i wanted to comment about your daughter’s teacher situation. i had a similar teacher in high school. that commented every day on actual romantic couples in the class and also couples that he made up…he had a whole storyline going about what i probably did with the boy at the desk in front of me the night before. that boy and myself were mortified but what could we do? i wish now that someone had spoken up or that i had gone back after graduation and spoken up. think about it…a teacher at a Catholic school discussing sex with girl and boy students at that school…shouldn’t the diocese be even just a tiny bit concerned about this, given the news stories of the past 15 years? …anyway, i wanted to send anonymous support to your daughter…teachers should not talk about sex with students.

@2018dad - so scary seeing that map of the current ongoing fires. Read that a suspected arsonist was arrested Sat (http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2014/may/10/arson-fire-chula-vista-broadway/</a>), although with all the other fires starting up, it sounds like there may be other arsonists in the area. Hope they can all be identified and arrested quickly. So scary how quickly the fires spread out there. @GertrudeMcFuzz and @2018dad and others in the area - keeping you and all of SoCal in my thoughts and prayers. Please stay safe and keep us updated when possible.

Good morning all - things calmed down significantly overnight. The fire danger rises & falls with the winds, and it looks like the winds will be much calmer today, so cautiously optimistic. Schools have been closed & my work is closed & DH @TitanAPBioTchr‌ has called for a sub, so we’ll all huddle in our house keeping an eye on the news while it is 103 degrees outside. D’18 asked last night “Why do we live here?” I had to remind her that while the rest of the country was experiencing a freezing brutal winter, we had pleasant mild weather. But everything comes with a price & this is ours.

@GertrudeMcFuzz and @2018dad - Sending prayers to you and to all those in the fire areas and hoping you all stay safe! I can’t believe arson is involved with all of this!

Today is DD’s last day of school! I really can’t believe it is all done! Tonight is Honor’s Night and the seniors have tomorrow off although the weather isn’t supposed to be great (for around here). It doesn’t seem like it will be too rainy but who knows. She doesn’t have to take exams next week, only to report for graduation practice a couple of days. And prom is a week from today! If she finds out she’s gotten a summer job, maybe we’ll take some time to do some dorm room shopping but I know she’ll want to spend time with friends so maybe that will wait!

Thanks everyone for your concerns and prayers. So far, we are OK and not under evacuation.

Winds will be calmer today as @GertrudeMcFuzz mentioned but it will be the hottest day so far this week. Mid nineties on the coast and triple digit few miles inland. Most of the fires are under control except the one near Cal State San Marcos. I heard that that school’s commencement scheduled this weekend has been cancelled/postponed.

Back to the our regular scheduled programming:
Amidst the tension the fires created the last few days, my D mentioned yesterday that she won a local scholarship. Her counselor told her yesterday. It wasn’t much, but enough for a very good nice loaded laptop, so we are grateful.

I am sorry I haven’t written but I have had no internet access other than my phonewhich is having problems charging. your words got me through times when i thought I would have a,heart attwck. I am just writing to ask that you all pray for us in San Diego county. There is a state of emergency here all schools are cancelled including ap exams today and itsv DD’s final today. kids reallyare resillant, she will not be able to live in our house before college. 8 rooms of our house were damaged and will be gutted on sat. prom is friday and she has been doing everything to get ready for it on her own.She is keeping up her friends spirits with the craziness surrounding all of san diego.

Please prayfor us because today will be the hottest dayall week and presents the most fire danger. It was,so strange last night to be at the robotics end of the year baquet but look at the sky and see, smoke. I will write more when Ihave internet to tell you about our house water damage which is worse than we expected. It is,just tough to write because it makes,it more real.good thoughts appreciated.

Oh @itsv - I did not realize you were here in SD as well - what a time you are having!

@gertrude, yes i live in sd too but fortunately not near fire. my house is always where people go to evacuate. If fire gets to my neighborhood then that is really bad news for San Diego. I am surprised I haven’t had a breakdown yet. The weather on top of heaters and fans in my house made it 120 ° inside while Ihad to be there since most of the contents of my house were emptied this week. I got supersick since I know my house is not a healthy environment. Thank goodness there is a minute clinic nearby and I got antibiotics. even my DH called in sick today, first time in 20 years. The fires really havethe poential to be over the top for me but i just take it one hour at a time. when I feel overwhelme i get in my car and, drive around a couple of blocks and get a drink of water. Irestored my house for 20 years, it is historical designated and will be a pain to rebuild.
In other news insurance,is paying for hotel room for son coming home for collegefor DD’s graduation.Neighbors have volunteered their homes for grad partyand my work meetings. But we will cancel vacation to cabo. we need to be around to be around our house. breaks my heart but i will see if i can reschedule. Thanks again to all of your good thoughts and prayers. it helped me tremendously.

Oh @itsv, so overwhelming for you I can understand why you are on the edge. We’re all thinking of you and your family. How wonderful of your neighbors, sounds like you have a great community. Please take care of yourself and don’t be afraid to say no to things that aren’t essential right now. You need your health! Here’s hoping for cooler weather as soon as possible.

@itsv- I am so so sorry that so many difficulties have hit at a time that is meant for celebration. It sounds like you have supportive loving people in your life which is a blessing. Keep us informed. Sending prayers.

@itsv, kudos to you for your positive attitude! Keep it up! @gertrudeMcFuzz, @2018dad, @itsv, stay safe! Here is to the hope that tomorrow will be better than today!

@eyemamom, I wonder if you can pass on this information to another teacher or administrator that you are comfortable talking to. You are not complaining but just letting things out. These kind of things need to come out sooner than later, if he is saying something like that to your D he must be doing the similar thing to others. It is none of his business to comment about private lives of his students!

My news is small compared to others but DS was in a car accident today. Thankfully only a fender bender (his) and nobody was hurt. The other car called it in to insurance but are not filing a claim, so thankfully it will not have an effect on rates . The irony is he wasn’t even supposed to drive today it his friend was running late and DS had to be on time to take the Econ APs. I do t have details but I wonder if he was rushing and/or distracted because of having to suddenly shift gears and drive (no pun intended).

I’m just happy nobody was hurt. Our traffic is notorious and he has to drive nearly 20 miles to school, most of it on the DC Beltway which makes ME nervous and I’ve been driving for nearly 35 years!

@2014novamom I’d be a nervous wreck if my son had to drive on the DC Beltway! Once he ended up on I-95 (north of the beltway) because the nav system told him to even though we’d mapped out a back-roads route. We still aren’t sure how he got where he was going (University of Maryland) but he may have ended up on the Beltway. He tells me he’s fine but usually he only needs to drive the 2 miles to school at 35 MPH.

Glad nobody was hurt!

@eyemamom You are very justified in complaining but I agree you could wait until grades are finalized. The teacher needs to be called out on creepy, inappropriate behavior. Hope that’s all it is.

@2014novamom - I am so glad he was not injured, and am very sorry he had to go through this. I hope he wasn’t too rattled.

@itsv - You are really going through the wringer right now. I am sending prayers and good thoughts your way.

@2014novamom‌ - glad your son’s accident wasn’t worse.

Heat wave in N. California is gross. Thankful the S. Cal wildfires aren’t a problem for us (yet). Hope S. Cal friends are OK.

S14 took last AP exams today. He is grumpy and I am staying out of his way.

S11 is home for 3 days then flies cross country for 10 week internship. I took him shopping for business casual work clothes. He bought his first leather wallet (has been fabric) and kit bag ever. Guess he is maturing into a 21 year old man!

DS’14 just took his last exam. Tuesday is the last day of school.

Thinking of everyone out in SoCal!
