Yep- wisdom teeth consult is next Tuesday. Hope it goes as well as Calla 1’s S.

Oh how weird! My S has an appointment for August 4th to get his 3 impacted wisdom teeth out as well. It’s good to hear it’s not that bad. I think he’s a little nervous about it.

Wisdom Teeth extraction: another right of passage on the journey. S had his 4 wisdom teeth removed without incident. Unfortunately, his girlfriend seems like she might be having some trouble 3 weeks post-op.

It’s a nice excuse for ice-cream and milkshakes for a few days for the whole family. Between this and grad parties and eating on the road for orientation and move-in, I now understand the freshman-parent 15!

Glad to hear it went well Calla. D is having her wisdom teeth removed in early August.

We went to the dentist this week expecting him to say they need to come out. Instead he said they were all the way in so no need to pull, just be sure to keep clean. Woohoo!! (since we have no dental insurance)

Less than a month until move-in.
And he is still just sitting around the house. No summer job. I’m thinking my car needs a good wash/wax!

AP scores were good and bad. He did not do so well on the English Lit, either, @momreads. But he did super on Calc BC and Physics (don’t remember which one).

We also did the wisdom teeth thing this spring. D is on a terrific insurance right now that covers dental, and she loses it when she turns 18, so we’re trying to take advantage of that while we have it! She switches to the college’s insurance plan in the fall.

@MaryJay60 Regarding the invitation printing: we tried RiteAid/Walgreens but the quality was horrible. I actually refused them because the online order form had promised us “full bleed” (printing to the edges with no border) and D had spent hours doing a beautiful design in Photoshop, but they printed with a border. Anyway - we took the same file to our local copy shop and they made GREAT copies for just a few pennies more than RiteAid/Walgreens. I was much happier with the quality, and I like supporting local businesses, too
The only issue was that they didn’t come with envelopes, so I had to buy a box at Staples. If you go this route,

Anyone else with an IB kid? IB scores were also released recently, at least here. Maybe to coincide with AP scores? D got a 6 in visual art and a 4 in HL bio. She was hoping for a better score in bio but oh, well!

D had her teeth removed this spring as well. Glad to get that over with!

Have any of you set a weekly budget for spending money? D has saved a lot of money and is working this summer, and she’s trying to determine her budget. We’re both thinking $50/wk will be more than enough. Her brother gives himself $60/wk, but the food at his school is limited and not good at all so he ends up eating out more than he wants.

That is a great question @eyemamom. D’s chosen meal plan is only 10 full meals at the buffet place, and the rest in a ‘food debit’ account. I need to verify if that amount is released all at once, though I seem to recall it was released in weekly increments. So that’s some budgeting for her - don’t blow it all on Monday or you’ll go hungry on Saturday. There is also a ‘tiger bucks’ account to use at the bookstore, hair salon etc. I could see her going through that faster than the food debit.

D is working this summer and we set a savings goal of $3200 for her spending money. It works out to about $100 a week during school after subtracting for breaks. I will transfer the money into D’s account weekly at first. Then, as (IF) she demonstrates good budgeting, I’ll make bi-weekly, then monthly transfers. This system worked really well for my S and developed his budgeting skills. Not sure I will have similar success with my shopaholic D. She has an unlimited meal plan at school, but she needs to keep snacks on hand to regulate her blood sugar. The money will also cover her entertainment and gas expenses. Sewanee is rural and for various reasons, I’m letting her bring her car to campus. Between dorm and clothes shopping, medical and dental expenses, getting her 11 year old car in better condition, and the tuition bill, I feel like I’m bleeding money these days. Ugh.

Catching up on lots of threads! Haven’t thought about a weekly budget for DD yet. Most of her meals should be covered by her meal plan and the flex points on it but the allure of great dining options right off campus will be tempting! She received enough in scholarships to cover what she “should” be spending on herself and books this year. Her summer earnings can help towards a new wardrobe after wearing a uniform the past 4 years. Luckily she’s a thrifty shopper and there’s an awesome resale shop in the next town that she’s found some really great buys at - yesterday’s purchase was a sleeveless jean jacket for $8-10.

Re shoes - yup - that could be a problem! When DD and I were visiting Providence College a couple of years ago the tour included a girls dorm room. DD and her BFF who was with us were very impressed with the collection of high heeled shoes hanging high on the wall with the heels hooked over a hard tube where the electrical wires went around the room! It was really a genius solution and looked cool too! Both girls commented that they’d have to remember that! Although most of DD’s shoes are flats and sneakers so not sure how that would work for her!

S had his four wisdom teeth removed a month ago. It appeared to be without incident, but his temperature spiked to 102.0 F two days after the procedure. The oral surgeon from the same office on call said it should go down, but that if it went any higher we should take him to the emergency room. It did slowly go down and there were no further complications so there was no need to do anything further.

^yikes, that sounds a little scary. Glad to hear that it turned out fine. DS had a fever of 104.2 when he was diagnosed with mono. I’ve never seen either one of my kids look so awful. It was frightening. Took him to urgent care owned & run by mt. Sinai ER drs. DS was given 2 intravenous bags of saline water, which took about an hour, and his fever went down to 101. He turned a corner after that. The dr. told us that it was much better that I took him to urgent care center than to his pediatrician bc he wouldn’t have gotten the IV, and it made all the difference.

D is having wisdom teeth out a week from today. She’s very petite so I must confess to worrying about medications, pain killers etc.totally forgot about wisdom teeth when thinking about this summer. Family vacation 6 days post surgery. Hope she’s well.

Just got back from the first round of college shopping and I’m exhausted! I think I’m doing the rest online. Thank goodness for Amazon Prime!

Speaking of shoes, DS also has quite the number of shoes, including those for his sport. And we just bought him two new pairs today (1 pair of dress shoes and a pair of bucks) plus he still needs snow boots. Hmmm…

If any of you have a container store nearby, check their website for their college night, I did it 3 years ago for S1 and will do it for S2. In our area it’s July 27. They close the store to the gen’l public and open it just for college shopping, putting the typical dorm stuff on sale. You have to register for it online.

Went shopping at bed, bath & beyond yesterday, and target. Does anyone have experience w sheets made of a jersey knit that 100% modal? Bought a set of x-long twin at bb&b. it was among the dorm sheets display but I’m not convinced that I like them. Son thought they felt nice like a t-shirt. Wonder how they hold up.

@RenaissanceMom: I have a set of those sheets for DS. He loved the t-shirt feel and they’ve held up well. They don’t fit the bed as tightly as regular sheets as they are stretchy. He still loves them.

Double yikes @austinareadad and@RenaissanceMom. When D had mono it took her out for several weeks, but she never had that scary high temperature. I wish we had a Container Store in our area! D and I are heading to BB&B and Target this weekend. We’re going to do more looking than buying. I’m waiting for dorm assignment and tax-free weekend to do the bulk of our shopping. It’s killing me though because I’d love to get it out of the way. Feeling like there’s so much still to do before launch.

So all this talk of shoes piqued my curiosity. I just ventured into the black hole for a count (and this is after she cleaned out her closet 2 weeks ago): 39 pairs of shoes and 8 pair of boots! Most of these she bought herself or got as gifts. To D, babysitting/work = shoes. She’s definitely going to have to leave some behind.
