Congrats to everyone on the awesome AP scores! And good luck to those waiting.
Got a bill for my daughter’s student loans (she would have been graduating college in 2015). Payment is now due. Why? “She’s out of grace.”
I’m thinking I’m on the phone with some evangelical person. She goes on to explain that since D wasn’t in class at least half time, student loan payments are no longer deferred so payment is due.
So much to keep on top of when your kid isn’t on the college track. Just an FYI to those with get Stafford loans.

I think there was a discussion early this spring about the best places to get inexpensive invitations printed. Walgreens, maybe? Wal-Mart? Sam’s? I tried searching, but can’t find what I’m looking for. Input on CHEAP invites, and how did you lay out the invitation?

Shutterfly or snapfish…

Son’s AP scores were available this morning. He did well with 6 5s: Chem, Stats, Gov, Macro, Lit and Psych. He ended the AP “career” with 13 5s ( and college board got more than $1200 from us.) He would have about 60 hours but like CinMom’s S, he’s pre-med so he won’t be able to use all of these. Still, he wasn’t crushed by the work and I hope it bodes well for college. Hopefully he can take enough credit to be able to do a study abroad term in pre-med. That would make the test fees money well spent. (Or if he changes from pre-med which is a reasonable statistical probability)

@Maryjay60 – Shutterfly, Snapfish, My Publisher (two of these have merged?) all have pre-formatted invitations that can be printed matte. Prices tend to start below $1/card and can rise quickly if you start adding rounded corners, envelope liners, return address, etc.

If you need something soon, you can always print at home on your own color printer, although the per card price might be high is using an Ink Jet printer.

Or, if you want to use a photo and are able to overlay text using Photoshop, you can always print photos at Costco for 13 cents each. I assume the same is true of Wal-Mart and Walgreens. I have printed text over photo collages and uploaded to Costco. As long as the file is a JPG, it prints perfectly.

I printed our own and put 4 on each page. Used a scrapbooking paper cutter to cut them apart. worked out perfectly. It is also really easy to use something like PowerPoint to post a photo and overlay text.

Walgreens, single image card, .85 cents each, watch for coupon codes, regularly 30-50% off. D designed her cards with Indesign and saved as a JPEG image.

Greetings to all!

The AP scores are in, and my son was a pretty happy kid. Earned National AP Scholar. Showed he was a true math kid with 5’s on statistics and macro/micro econ. Also got a 4 on physics B. Got a 4 on government, and he did not take the class (a friend told him he could get a good score without it, and he did). The only bummer was AP Lit. He cannot figure out how he scored so low. He really thought he did better. Oh well.

My house looks like College Central. In the living room is all the stuff my son is taking with us to orientation in a week and putting into storage before next month’s move-in. The dining room has my older son’s stuff that he’s taking to law school.

I’ll get my house back. Someday…

Thanks for the invitation info! I’ve cut it too close, of course, so I was wondering if the “words-over-image” JPEG would work from Walgreens. Great! I can get 1-hour turn-around that way!

Congrats to your son @momreads, and all the other AP scholars. My D got 4s across the board this year, AP Lit, AP Euro, AP Macroeconomics. Her school teaches it as Macro/Government, but didn’t offer the government exam. She had 5s previsouly in World History and US History, so she’s well started on her liberal arts credits.

All the college stuff is still in her room, much of it in a trunk, and her clothes are always in heaps anyway. I told her she can not take 29 pairs of shoes to college and she said ‘just watch me’ which I then should not have laughed at.

I need to reclaim more of my house from general summertime and renovation clutter. On Sunday I’m going to an art exhibit with a good friend, and she just told me she invited another woman along. I don’t mind more company, but I can’t let a complete stranger see this mess! Meeting them in the driveway and hurrying them into my car seems less than polite.

I too want my house back! S had a job transfer cross country and dumped a ton of stuff he didn’t want to move in his old room. I can’t put college purchases in D’s room (the black hole) for fear I’ll never find them again so the guest room has become the college storage room. The study has been a junk room for awhile now, and I have yet to get D to clean off the dining room table. Ugh!

D is ignoring the AP scores since she pretty much blew off the tests. She was too busy doing make-up work to study, and she has as many credits as she can use for general ed requirements. I figure she’ll look when she’s ready.

Until someone mentioned this today, I hadn’t given much thought to a bike. I did a quick search and was astounded at the cost of many bikes. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good, affordable campus bike for a girl? Are your kids bringing bikes?

@Overtheedge you might check with your local police department for a bike! The university my son will attend has 2-3 bike auctions a year of abandoned/lost and unclaimed bikes. Our local police do the same (but maybe only once a year). You might find a super deal that way!

@12dandelion - we have the same shoe problem! I keep showing D pictures of the dorm rooms but it’s not sinking in. Worse, the dorm she wants has no doors on the closets so there’s no way to add an over the-door shoe rack. This will be interesting.

Thanks Maryjay60 for the tip!

Re: bikes - at our school, nearby Kmarts and other such stores will allow you to order now and pick up in the fall when the student arrives. Be sure to get a good lock. The best insurance seems to be a U-lock in combination with a cable lock. Also, if you engrave the driver’s license # on the frame, there is a much higher percentage chance of getting the bike back, as the police do look for such things.

@overtheedge same thing in her dorm, no doors on the closets. She does have one of those hanging shoe organizer things, I guess she’ll just have to stuff it full of 29 pairs instead of the intended 6.

Her campus (RIT) has a bike-share program. I don’t know all the details of how it works, but that’s probably what she’ll do at least the first year.

I made progress clearing one flat area of clutter. I have a much smaller pile now of stuff for dh to sort. He’s a terrible clutter bug, but if it all looks like small tools (well, because it is) I can safely blame it all on him.
I think I can deal with my own and S17’s stuff, then we’ll just shut the door on D’s room …

Taking lots of shoes could also be an issue for my son. He has three or four pairs of Sperrys, a couple of pairs of new tennis shoes he will use daily and running shoes. I told him that we needed some sort of shoe rack for everything. We’ll get it around move-in day, I guess. Not sure what my son thought when he walked in and saw the piles in the living room. My mom thought it was a great idea that I started the packing. I already have told my son that he needed to contribute to the packing this weekend. I think he gets it…

Does any one know if you get the full scoring for the AP exams? My D is most interested in the breakdown of her photography AP portfolio. She received a 5 (yay!!!) but I think she would like to know more about how her work was evaluated. Her actual portfolio was returned several weeks ago.

Anyone else doing the wisdom teeth thing before school starts? DS had his pulled yesterday. He’s practically normal today, despite all 4 being impacted.

I was nervous but am relieved to have it over with.

As a matter of fact, @calla1, my DD had her consult today. Her 3 wisdom teeth will come out next Wednesday! Glad to hear your son’s extraction went well.
