We have friends whose son goes the University of Dayton and loves it! I’ve heard it’s a really pretty campus. You do know that it’s a catholic university, right?

Yes, I do know that. I know whatever is available on their website but not the things you can actually see in person.

Another acceptance! (okay, maybe I just went into this as a pessimist - I didn’t expect results so early, nor did I expect any merit aid) to Cornell College in Iowa. This college is One Course At A Time. The students take one course for three and half weeks and then take a four day break, so students end up taking four courses in a semester. This format means they can do internships, the class can be off-campus, and more experience- or project-based. I think this type of learning fits D better than the lecture/exam format - she’s definitely better with hands-on material and projects.

This one really counts because it’s one of D’s top choices. OTOH, D has about 4,5 top choices (out of 9 schools). I told her she can drop the local safety school; and, it’s up to her whether or not she wants to apply to the remaining two RD schools. She said she may drop the remaining in-state school (the early favorite, St. Mary’s College of Maryland) but she still wants to apply to U. of Puget Sound.

Me? I would have dropped all three remaining schools. This college application/admission process is exhausting.

@Conmama, I wasn’t worried about losing the merit aid so much as wondering what the English teacher wrote in her letter of recommendation if D got a C first quarter in her class. I guess the teacher ended up writing a pretty strong letter (maybe D was doing well during that period of time?).

@slackermommd love that school and it was on D list but she didn’t like it geographically…I think you will be pleasantly surprise with all the choices she may have!!!
Happy Thanksgiving may good keep coming for everyone in this group.

@SlackerMomMD, I know a young man who attends Cornell and he ADORES it.

We still haven’t received any acceptances, this is week 3 since she submitted her Common App. We haven’t received any rejections, either. What are we, invisible?

Congratulations @SlackerMomMD! The one class at a time colleges sound really interesting to me. I like the idea of trips and hands-on experience not interfering with other classes.

@Irishmomof2, I hope you get something - acceptances - soon. D said she should hear from 5 schools by 12/19. I think I thought most schools would take until December to notify their applicants. I always think no news is good news. If you haven’t heard yet, chances are 1) your child has been accepted and 2) the real decision is how much merit aid will they offer. At least that’s how it plays in my mind
Good luck!

It’s good know to someone likes the school. I’ve gotten some negative feedback from friends who think it’s just plain weird.

Semester finals around the corner; D Senioritis is in high gear…I’m holding my tongue because any words right now causes major drama!!!
Hope all in this group ends the 2014 on a good note…heading into 2015 will be bitter sweet

Greetings!

I am so happy to read all the good news on here!

We finally have filed applications! This is so much fun huh?

Good luck @Hoosier96 you seem to be about a month ahead of us so I will be using you as as example of how to survive first semester!

How would you handle this? DS was waitlisted from IUB and they suggested he turn in another set of SAT/ACT scores and his 7th semester grades. Well, he hadn’t studied for all of that since spring, there was no time (nor motivation) and we decided he should give the ACT a try and he didn’t do well. So, we are not turning in anymore scores…just 7th semester grades when they are available. They wanted the scores by 12/31. I believe we should email admissions back and let them know grades will be forthcoming as soon as possible, but that they will not be receiving additional SAT scores. (I’m having them banned from his transcript, too). My question is: should he just say that he is basically sticking with the scores previously sent? Or does that look like he’s not taking what they want seriously? Should he mention that he did take another test as requested, but not happy with is score, so will not be turning them in? Not sure how to handle.

@conmama is he working with his GC or CG at school? It might be an email for them to write or a phone call? If the GC is on good terms with the regional rep they might want to make a case for your son?.

He’s not working with the GC. Actually, we are almost 100% sure he will be denied. We are sort of waiting on that to be able to apply to the other program once he is. I just don’t want them to think we are ignoring what they are requesting…but not sure to mention that he did bad on another score…or just not mention that.

My 2 cents, @conmama. Has your son sent in both sets of SAT scores? If so, then have your son email them and explain he is not planning to retake the SAT a third time. Make up something like “he wants to focus on his school work to make sure he is prepared to graduate high school and enter college” and so forth. Include the 7th semester grades. If you’ve only sent in one set of SAT scores, then in the other set and then do the explanation. Good luck!

He actually did two SAT’s last spring and sent those both in. We didn’t get the waitlist notice until the beginning of October, so the reason you are providing will work. I think I’ll have him say what you suggested, thanks!

Hi all! I’m new here. I look forward to “meeting” everyone

Welcome @kkgco5! This is a wonderful and supportive group. We are stressing about college apps and trying to help each other through the process. Do you have an S or D graduating this year? Where are you in the application process?

@conmama Something similar happened to my D at a large Maryland state school recently. They said that in the “first review” her SAT/ACT scores were not high enough and requested additional scores. D took it to mean an outright rejection. I rescued the letter from the recycling bin and realized they were also asking for first quarter grades. Hers were quite good this quarter.

I contacted the admissions rep for our area telling her D had already taken the SAT twice and ACT once and would not be taking either again (all the scores were fairly low). She wrote a long email back saying that in the first review, they only looked at SATs and grades and they would definitely consider the new grades and her essay in the “second review” once all the early action applicants had been reviewed. So we’re kind of in limbo here, too.

@shoboemom Thank you for the welcome! I have a S in this class and a D in 2016. But yes, I am in the same boat stressing over it all. We are in NC and have applied to five schools and will be applying to sixth soon. One is a reach/dream school but I think he still has about a 30% chance. He’s gotten two acceptances but not to the schools he really wants to go to. I don’t think we will hear anything else until mid January which is so frustrating!

Could anyone tell me a shortcut way to see where the Class of 2014 3.0-3.3 got accepted?

I couldn’t find anything for 2014 but here’s the link for Class of 2013 3.0-3.3. I hope the information isn’t too stale (I can’t seem to figure out how quickly admissions information changes). Should we be starting our own list?
