Parents of the HS Class of 2015

S decided on the spur of the moment this week to apply to the reachy UCs. That was close to $200 I hadn’t planned to spend, but what the hey. Gotta indulge the kids now and then.

I can’t imagine we could pay to send him there, so it’s just for fun. Unless we were to move to CA so that it would be in-state after the first year. But H already turned down a UC job offer a couple of years ago. Loves the climate, but he is wary of the long term water supply issues. So doesn’t seem likely.

H is presently trying to find a good school in a warm climate to move to as he has found to his astonishment that his body is losing it’s tolerance to cold weather after all these years. Preferably not too humid, and hopefully not a place where school boards are ripping apart textbooks. Plentiful fresh water supplies. Does such a place exist?

Its official. The Common App in our house is finally complete! This week the 1 or 2 that are common app only with no supplemental essays will go out, and on we trudge. He wants to do his #1 choice next and then work on a few matches before his reaches (his list is sooo reach heavy). I guess that it doesn’t matter since he’s already in at the state flagship (a great school, just sooo big). There is no way on this earth that everything will be done by Jan 1. I’m thinking his list is going to shrink considerably as he realizes that he has over 30 essays left to write (some schools have 6!) and he writes roughly 1 every 2 days. LOL. Its going to be a long month…

Huge Kudos to those with acceptances, are finished with apps, or are focusing on scholarships. I can only hope to join your ranks soon. :-)

We have 13 down, 2 to go, plus some scholarship apps. 5 were due today and he has been finishing them up all of last week and over the weekend. He submitted one on Tuesday night that he got an email about Wednesday (and didn’t tell me until Saturday), that says his counselor eval, transcript and school report are missing. That was all submitted to CA in early October, and all his other CA schools have it, so why this one? He emailed the Adcom yesterday but they are in California so we have not heard anything. This is due today!!! Any suggestions?

@wrights1994, when you go to the Common App and check “my schools” (or something like that), does it show a green check mark for all of these items?

I’m beginning to wonder if, now that she had 2 acceptances to schools she loves, my daughter is going to drop the app to school #3. She’s started the app and doesn’t have much left to complete, but she hasn’t worked on it in weeks. Hmmm.

@OHMomof2: On the day the bursar bill arrives, all of them.

Congratulations on all the acceptances and submitted applications!

May I ask a favor of you all? Can you send positive thoughts to one of BHG’s dear friends from school who finds out today if she is matched via Questbridge? The mother of this young lady was a teen mom from a rough environment, and ran with the wrong crowd. But, after she had ‘Belle’, obtained her GED in her early 20’s, and turned her life around so that her daughter, BHG’s friend, had better opportunities. We’re gifting much of what I already purchased for BHG’s dorm to this young lady through the mother so the mother can gift it to this young lady for their Xmas holiday. The mother’s pride is in the way right now, but we’ll see how long it takes for her to give in to me–lol. I already started on a conversation along the lines of, “think how much you will have to get Belle back & forth to school.” It’s starting to work the closer we get to decision time. And, yes, I AM a caretaker to those who fight to survive. That is the least I can do.

It’s Cyber Monday, and Herberger’s, Bloomingdale’s & several other stores have awesome sales on dorm related stuff–annual bonus check makes this spending a little easier-- ; .

@sbjdporlo‌ If you’d consider a LAC or small engineering school, there are some interesting possibilities.

Berea College in KY, free tuition–$5.7k room and board. College of the Ozarks–Christian–free tuition. Cooper Union, NYC–small, selective engineering, used to be free for all, now sliding scale, although no dorms and living in NYC could make it unaffordable. For maritime engineering, Webb Institute on along Long Island, NY. And there’s Deep Springs in Inyo County, CA–“the cowboy school”–located on a working ranch with the 26 students working it. It’s a 2-year-college, so you have to transfer to finish a degree, and is mega selective. I know someone teaching at an Ivy who went there.

I found this list with some other free/affordables: <a href=“Best Tuition-Free Colleges In The U.S.”>http://www.thebestschools.org/blog/2012/12/10/20-colleges-providing-free-tuition/

@W2BeHome‌ When I read “cost sheets” the caffeine hadn’t kicked in and I thought you were talking about the price of bedding, actually a non-trivial question since many dorms use the less common extra-long twin size.

@BunHeadMom, sending positive thoughts out to BHG’s friend. My nephew is also a finalist and will hear today, although I’m not too worried if he doesn’t match - I think he will have lots of opportunities. Fingers crossed for the kids finding out today!

@latichever - ha! I have been doing some misreading myself quite a bit lately on here. At least you figured yours out before you responded to someone…unlike someone I know.

@wrights1994, I would definitely call and not wait for a response to an email with a looming deadline. A couple schools we’ve tried to contact about things never responded to email, but were very helpful on the phone.

@BunHeadMom, Positive thoughts on the way for the kiddo (and mom) hoping for Questbridge.

I do keep being tempted by the sales for dorm things, but not knowing where she will be, and if it will be close (a drive) or far (a flight) makes that challenging. I suspect if we have to ship things, that might end up costing more than what we save.

Unfortunately “humid” and “fresh water supplies” seem to go hand in hand.

New Mexico mountains?

@bunheadmom - absolutely! Please let us know if she is matched so we can celebrate with you!

@latichever,

We actually got materials in the mail from College of the Ozarks. Dh and I love this school. It would be a long shot since they only admit 10% out of the area. It’s still under consideration, but it would definitely be a reach. Our income qualifies us, but we’re not local. Our son wasn’t so interested at the time we got the materials because he was dead set on engineering, but I think we need to take a look again since they have some great majors like English, CS, and Music.

In other news, still no SAT II scores from November. :frowning: I called College Board and they’re going to look into it. I don’t know what it will mean for my son’s EA school that required them…

S’12 applied to Berea. It is hard if you are outside their target (Appalachia) and even if you aren’t. Its yield is higher than Harvard’s!

App #4 due today, in order to qualify for merit aid. I am hopeful he surprises me and does the tiny (250 word) essay so he can submit it.

D is without scores today also. I spoke with DSS agent scores are released Tuesdays and Thursdays he also related that they will not take it (checking in why) to the next level until after Dec 11 this FYI.

He just forwarded me the email… it says it may take several weeks for those items to reflect as accepted… so I am thinking no worries for now.

BH mom… praying for “Belle”!!

@BunHeadMom…Positive thoughts for the Questbridge results, and MAJOR props to you for everything you’re doing to help them along. I can only hope to come back in another life to be as caring and giving a person as you are!! ^:)^

I hate the movie “Pay It Forward” but I truly do believe in the concept. If I do something for someone and they try to refuse because of “pride” or whatever, or want to pay me back, I tell them to find someone who needs something from them, and that balances out what I did nice for them.

It’s like some people can give time, some can give money, some can’t give either right now. But positive thoughts and little things mean a lot. Raising a child who is doing well in this world is thanks enough to the planet.
