Parents of the HS Class of 2015

ED notification is in 11 days. Hopeful but not comfortable. Good news is that if it is bad news, he finds out two EA schools within the next week.

If your DC gets rejected from their top choices, how do they gear themselves up to convince other schools they were really your DC’s top choice?

@rhandco‌ , I keep reminding my child that he has 8 top choices ( not one) and I keep talking up the safeties and possible matches in positive light. Not making it obvious but just pointing out 1 or 2 things that I liked. It is easier for me since I really like somethings about every school on the list. It helps that my child is realistic too but still, I think parents doing this subtle hinting may help.

@rhandco‌ Not unusual for some ED and EA notifications to come out before the official notification date.

@rhandco We have tried not to talk too much about first choice. I personally would be happy with any of my daughter’s choices, and can see something good about each school. And I think she feels that way, too. Naturally, she has her preferences. But, I have tried to soften that a little bit in the event that her EA schools don’t work out. I have also made it clear that no matter how it goes, it isn’t a direct reflection on her, since she is more than qualified for all of the schools she applied to. Schools can’t accept every great applicant.

This is a tough time for those of us waiting for EA and ED decisions. Mine hears from his dream school/program any day now (based on previous years’ history). On top of that, there are still applications, honors college, and scholarship stuff to deal with. Hang in there everyone! I have an older child that is currently at her 4th choice school. She was devastated in mid-December and then again in April of her HS senior year. About 1 day into her orientation for the school she chose, she was extremely happy how it all turned out. Her school is actually much stronger in her field than the three that rejected her! This perspective has been very helpful for current senior. Even though he will be greatly disappointed if he does not get in early, he knows it’s a crap shoot and there are plenty of great schools out there.

Well, looks like my son won’t be waiting for his EA decision because Northeastern is going to roll his application into the RD pool thanks to College Board. Sigh.

@sbjorlo–That is a big bummer. Shame on College Board. >:P

Oh @sbjdorlo, How disappointing! I would have hoped that contacting the admissions office would be able towkr with you, letting you self report the score pending verification.

D’s other safety has posted her acceptance online! Not a surprise, she was an auto-admit, but it’s nice to have it official! No word on merit yet, it says a letter is forthcoming. Having choices is a good thing!

Awesome news, shoboemom!

Well, admissions said they’re making their last review of EA candidates and without those scores, they can’t do that. They did say they would review his application earlier than later for regular decision.

It is disappointing simply because this would have been the first reach/match school, and it would be good to know if he’s competitive or not before all his apps are finished. His other EA school admits 60% of applicants, so it’s not as much of an unknown.

Yeah, College Board isn’t my favorite organization, to be sure…

@BunHeadMom: Your wonderful news and your generosity helped me today to remember the true spirit of the holiday season. Wishing only the best for Belle!

Speaking of the holiday season…This Christmas seems like a good opportunity to get some things for college. I started considering a tablet of some sort for D. She has a small laptop she’s used for the last couple years, but I wonder if a tablet might be more useful for college…for downloading books, taking notes, etc. What are the kids using these days? :-B
We were talking about campus safety and her aunt mentioned that she carries a combination flashlight/taser. She said the loud crackling sound it makes when you turn it on is probably enough to scare someone away!
8-X
D has started drawings, designing her perfect dorm, but it seems early to do too much with that, since we don’t know where it will be, what she can bring, or who she will be sharing with.
What are your thoughts on the tablet use, and what other things have you thought of that will be helpful to your soon-to be college student?

Shame on Northeastern! Have you called the College Board? I found them very accommodating when talking to them on the phone.
Are you 100% sure that the accommodations issue was with your school, and therefore THEY should be making the calls begging and pleading?

I’m curious though, if something like this happens, can Northeastern consider the app ED even though they can’t technically review it in time? That is, in terms of interest level?

(it is so difficult to deal with accommodations, my son took the PSAT without accommodations and a few subject tests without them, and then once he got accommodations, other things got messed up including score delays)

And as for self-reporting, am I correct that they did not release the scores at all, so there is nothing to self-report? That is what happened with my son.

shoboemom - I am getting some “get ready for college” presents for my twins for Christmas, as well. Though they will be less than thrilled right away, I think they will be happy in a few months! Found XL memory foam mattress toppers at Macys for 70% off on Thanksgiving weekend, and Corelle livingware at 50% off at Target. My D has asked for all sorts of storage items for the closet, jewelry, etc. and my son for things like bendable power strips and clip on lamps. Some of the prices for basics just can’t be beat with sales going on now!!

The Spawn stealthy applied EA last night(12/1) to a school just added to her list. How do we know? The school sent an email to Mrs.Three & I acknowledging the acceptance of Spawns’s application & reminding us that LOI’s & transcripts were our responsibility to sent to them electronically (Spawn’s school automagically sends the transcript & other school data as they track applications submissions on Naviance. Spawn will just need to submit her scores.)

@sbjdorlo what happened with College Board? We are waiting on EA from Northeastern too. So sorry!

ok - I just went back and re-read. What a bummer! I am so sorry you couldn’t get them to budge!

A folding chair is helpful. A fan is helpful. Earplugs can be helpful. More than one alarm clock.

For campus safety - don’t go out by yourself after dark first semester unless it is just to a dining hall. Don’t go off campus unless you are with others, and stay with them.

A tablet is more portable but make sure it is compatible with the textbooks she will be using. I know that color figures for example can be a problem on some tablets.

I expect my son to take a lot of what he has in terms of sheets and foam mattress topper and pillows. I used a hot pot at school to boil water or make macaroni and cheese, and I did have a mini-fridge. I’ll see what he ends up wanting. Some dorms ban certain electrical appliances.

I purchased a very cheap printer for DD on Black Friday. My deal of the day a color HP 3 in1 for $19. Most Unis have printers but i figured that she can use it to scan or copy when it’s late outside. I purchased quite a few XL twin 100% cotton sheets on clearance from Target. I will be giving most of them away to students that I know will need a littke extra help.

Bed Bath & Beyond has a supply list for most schools. We used that as a guide. I am going to rattle off things that we got: clothing appropriate for the weather, laptop, printer, fridge, desk and floor lamp, rug, bins for under the bed storage, shower and bathroom supplies ( hallway bathroom), bedding, x-tra long sheets, mattress pad and mattress cover, bed bug cover ( forgot what it’s called), fan, TV ( not sure how much use that got), vacuum, laundry detergent, small safe with a lock that attaches to the bed.

I am jumping ahead here- first we need a school! D narrowed it down to 8 ( knocked off 4 that she already applied to). Accepted to 1. Waiting for 7 #-o

@rhandco‌ , You are correct that the scores are not released yet, so there’s nothing to tell NU, unfortunately.

I called College Board three times, twice today. I don’t know what else I can do. I called Northeastern and my son emailed them, but at this point, he’s being rolled into RD because there are no scores to report and he’s a homeschooler, required to take two SAT IIs.

I don’t really blame NU because the deadline for scores to get there was yesterday. I suppose if my kid was a superstar in some way, they’d bend? But he’s not. LOL!

NU isn’t affordable anyways, not without scholarships.

Onward and upward, I guess!
