Parents of the HS Class of 2015

I told my D maybe CB felt sorry for her low score on that subject test. Heh. She was not amused.

I am looking for advice.

D has a very strong ACT score so is not sending SAT score. She did take subjects and though no school requires them with the ACT, I wonder if a Math II score of 700 is worth sending along or not.

Help, hurt or neutral, do you think?

^^ Yes, I know several non-hooked students at HYPMS who just hit 700 on their subject tests. I wrote one of their recs and part of the deal is I get to see this test scores, grades etc. Their SATs though were strong, and they had intense ECs. So if ACT is strong then why not. It find not hurt the students I know. My vote is neutral with strong ACT.

I think a score of 700 or above is worth sending. I am a newbie here. D got ED deferral from Duke, so we are back to the drawing board.

Welcome to our group @garden3. This is a great thread and the posters here are really helpful. I’m sorry about the deferral.

Thanks @MamaBear16. Do you know where I can get one of those fruity drinks?

My cabana boys are on their way to you, @garden3.

@awcntdb, I would consider looking at the percentile charts for the SAT subject tests and for the ACT scores. If the math is higher on the ACT then I probably wouldn’t send it, but if it is equal or higher I would.

@garden3, sorry to hear about the deferral, but Duke is a tough one! A deferred student there likely means a very strong candidate at lots of other great schools.

We are a bit worried that D will be shut out of her top picks and be left with basically safeties that she is less excited about, but they really could be great options. I guess we just want them to be by choice, not due to lack of choice. We keep going back to the drawing board to look for more schools…I suspect she will basically stick with her list, but we feel extra pressure to find other options as we see deadlines going by!

That’s a good idea, I’ll go take a look.

OK< editing.

They’re not even close. a 700 on Math 2 is 46%ile. If she had gotten it on Math 1 it would be 75%ile. I get that mathy kids take the harder exam, but that seems not that useful for this purpose.

Both her ACT and regular SAT math are about as high as possible to score.

Given that the math ACT is very good, and assuming her math grades are excellent, I think the 700 is neutral. Doesn’t help, probably doesn’t hurt. And remember, an 800 in the math2 exam is something like 85th percentile. So, no 99th percentile possible with math 2 exam.

Thanks, but for good reason, it is too late for to do that.

The advice I provided was from actual experience. The kids I am talking about had the 700 scores 1, 2, and 4 years ago. They got into HYPMS with those scores and are already there or graduated. One graduated already; the others are sophomores and one freshmen.

I need the cabana boys @suzy100!!! By D was (is?) supposed to hear about a major scholarship today. They said they would call each kid who was at the interviews (both positive or negative) today… she has been glued to the phone now for almost 12 hours and nothing. She has chatted with other kids who were at the interviews who have heard (some positive, some negative)… and is going CRAZY! Big breaths… my reassurance isn’t holding her as the evening ticks by!

When is a good time to submit an updated transcript for the common app? The GC submitted the transcript with sons grades from 9th to 11th grade back in September. He is doing very well in his senior year and he would like to include his grades so far in his senior year because they show a nice upward trend. The first semester is not over until the end of January, so no final grades until then, but most of his applications are due January 1st. Do or can GCs submit midterm grades?

Like a first quarter grade? I think GCs can if you ask.

The Common App contains an interface for GCs to submit a mid-year report, and many colleges require it.

Thanks @shoboemom. Yes I keep watching those deadlines go by too. D took a look at colleges again today and put more safeties on her list.

Congrats, @Bunheadmom and @Mom24boys!

@awcntdb, LOL Sorry about that, my reply should have been directed at OHMomof2.
Congratulations on getting 3 kids into great schools! :-)

How late do the cabana boys stay on duty? My kid has been laying on the kitchen floor for 20 minutes and crying about how she wont be able to go to school after getting deferred from her EA school. At this rate, she might just spontaneously combust from anxiety before the results are released! I’m gonna need a fruity drink over here! It’s been a long weekend and we have two more days to wait for EA…then most likely three more months of waiting!
