I’m so envious of the early Grad dates! Still 41 days to go here, but who’s counting.
Interestingly, our district moved the start date up for the next school year, so that kids are out in early June. There was a pretty significant backlash from parents of elementary/middle schoolers. Their argument was that changing the schedule JUST to better align with the AP exams/college summer programs was somehow “not fair” to the vast majority of kids district wide. I guess none of their kids will ever be in that position. Oh wait…a large percentage of our districts high schoolers take these exams.
Quite a difference between the 15’ers and D’12’s class. I recall many many UW Madison’s, a half dozen U of Alabama’s, Nebraska’s, U of Texas’s etc… that are conspicuous by their absence.
Graduation is June 19th here. Our district is changing the start date next fall as well. S15 has two AP tests this week (Gov and Econ) and S14 comes home tonight. Very excited!
Ours is around June 22nd. I’m not even sure, they had snow days and I don’t know if they affect the graduation date.
A HS not far from us lets all students take at least one AP course if they want to, regardless of grades or “promise”. This can be challenging yet they are very highly ranked in our state, because I think they let the kids choose if they want to take the AP test after the first quarter, and most parents whose kids aren’t doing well in an AP course won’t pay 90 dollars to have them take the exam.
My son’s school requires all AP students to take the AP exams. It kind of stinks in my opinion, and we’ll know better for our younger kids. Too much stress on them, and the AP teachers are all over the place for fourth quarter grades (mostly after the AP exams). Some give automatic A’s for showing up, others give multiple projects unrelated to the AP work.
I just got back from my older sister’s (not the oldest one) college graduation (undergraduate). Kinda cool - she graduated suma cume laude. And there was cake. My mom was like “4 years from now, we’ll be going out to Wichita for your graduation, Albert!”
Let me be the first to wish all of the Moms on our thread a Happy Mother’s Day!
Now for those of you who are fans of The Middle - I anticipate another Middle-worthy Mother’s Day in the wrestler house! Wrestler went for a 3 mile run before work today and then came home with a migraine so he is 'relaxing". DH worked today and did not get home until 7:00 p.m. He just exited the house in what he called “doing himself a favor.”
I write this as I am sitting here wearing my yellow shorts that were a gift based on their love of Middle episodes past. I think I might end up with a rigatoni necklace this year. At least since wrestler is working at a restaurant now, I should be able to go to brunch and not have to settle for Waffle House again!
Ah yes, the joys of motherhood!! Happy Mother’s Day to all!
Mother’s Day seems to surprise the other members of my household, every single year. It’s as if it gets moves around on the calendar and they never know when it’s coming: “Mother’s Day? It’s THIS WEEK?!”
@SlackerMomMD, cool map! I leave the counting of how many students per state to anyone else who wants to do the addition.
Meanwhile it looks like there are 2 major metropolitan areas where nobody on our list is headed, NYC and Chicago, a little surprising considering the number of good schools there.
It’s interesting how U Washington is all alone out there in the Northwest. There are some other good schools in the area, but this indicates to me that this site seems to be mostly East Coast/Midwest parents.
Or the west coast schools aren’t as generous with financial aid as the east coast schools perhaps.
Graduation is May 18 here. Last day of school is this coming Wednesday.
D just got up and said you ruin “the surprise” yeah right, she is off to get me the Sunday paper with the money I loaned her yesterday ;). To be honest both have made me a homemade card each year and some have been one worded and others have taken me hours to read…I love the home made cards just because it cause one of my kids to stop what they are doing and focus on ME
Happy Mother’s Day.
I think the number of parents participating in class years is also dwindling. 5 years ago; with the common app and the recession pressure? College was a “black box” for many of us. Fast forward to today, I don’t think as many people are as intimidated or as anxious about the process and fewer are seeking “therapy” :-SS
My guess, totally of the cuff, is; our group is about 1/2 the size of those named classes of a few years ago. That’ll change the geographic distribution.
My daughter took me to Lush and bought me a chunk of scrumptious-smelling soap the size of a hubcap. I could not be happier with my gift! It does make showering an adventure.
@LadyArwyn We are from the PNW! There are a few of us on here. I think the college process in general isn’t as intense here as in the midwest and east coast. Most kids here go to the state unis and local privates. I joined CC when my oldest S was looking at out of state schools and audition programs and wasn’t getting the help and support I needed. No one I knew was looking out of the region or at audition programs. At our school the counselors are very knowledgeable about in state applications but not really beyond that.
Happy Mother’s Day!! D is being nice today- she usually " complains" if she is working and I am talking while in the room with her. Given that it’s Mother’s Day combined with the end of senior year, she is loosening up a bit- at least for today! We will be attending a BBQ later this afternoon.
D is also busy ranking her dorm choices with her roommate. I prefer a different choice but I will stay quiet. If she is happy that’s all that matters.
DS1 e-mailed DH his signature so it could be included on the card from all 4 boys. I guess he assumed no place in Boston sold cards or maybe stamps. Anyway, his solution was very creative and gave me a big smile.
