@tranquil218 I feel your pain! We get to go through this next week on a Sunday afternoon. We ordered her dress in November per sales clerk if we had waited any longer (Thanksgiving) chances were it would not have come in on time for graduation…and for mass, at least they are attending, we are only full on Christmas and Easter
We’re ALMOST done making my transcript to send to WSU. Isn’t that silly, having to make one’s own transcript. It’s a lot harder than one might think. Oh well, I just want to be DONE… ~X( :((
LOL, @albert69. I understand perfectly. I am just waiting my son’s final grades from the community college (he was full time this semester for his senior year, but in legal matters, we are private homeschoolers) and then I will submit his final transcript for Penn via the Common App. He finished his classes on Friday, and he is reservedly excited that he may finish with straight As including the difficult Calculus I class. For a math disabled kid, this is a big deal.
He graduates this coming Saturday, the day he turns 18, along with 15 other homeschoolers that are a part of our co-op. He has his final Orchestral concert the next day.
Dh has a vacation week this week, thankfully. We’ll do one fun outing on Wednesday as a family (San Diego Safari Park), then Thursday is graduation dress rehearsal, Friday is concert dress rehearsal, Saturday is graduation/birthday, and Sunday is concert. Whew!!!
He won’t start his summer job til late June (playing cello in a summer production of Mary Poppins), so he plans to stretch out his birthday celebration by doing lots of stuff with friends in June.
@sbjdorlo Finishing Calc I with an A is a great satisfaction. I took Calc I in the spring of my Junior year as my first dual enrollment class. I will never forget the stress of my first exam, lol, first time I’ve ever taken a test that wasn’t going to be graded by my mom. After the shock of the first exam (I got a high B on it, which I shuddered at because I very much wanted to get an A in the class - but groaned when I saw the litany of really stupid errors I’d made), I got As on the rest of the tests, the final, and all the quizzes. I got As in all my dual enrollment courses too; it’s nice to see that nice little list of As on a real transcript.
Nice job, Albert! You clearly took the bull by the horns.
My son definitely did not have all As; he’ll end up with 8 As and 3 Bs in his college classes. Considering we weren’t sure he could even do college classes two years ago, and watching him struggle with math for so many years, makes us super-duper proud of him to see how far he’s come. Hopefully, he get the support he needs (one would hope an Ivy has a good support system for its students) so he can continue to see the fruit of his hard work.
@Hoosier96: we were so late on this dress. They didn’t inform us of the stupid dress specifications until late January. Between that and the bad weather here, we didn’t even get to the bridal store until mid-March. I’m astonished that the consultant was able to find a dress that met 90% of the specifications. DH keeps asking if D15 will be using the dress for her wedding. She looks at him as if he fell out of a tree. This school has been so brainless when it comes to graduation. They didn’t want to let D15 bring a date to the prom because she hadn’t notified them of his existence back in February and they didn’t want to call the hotel to arrange for one more seat. I had to contact the powers that be and send a sweetly poisonous note to make this happen.
We have a little less than a month to go. A month with senior skip days, field trips, senior picnic and probably some other stuff that I can’t remember right now.
My older daughter had over 700 in her class, but they gave every graduate a chance to have their family cheer for them before they announced the next one. My younger daughter has 400-something, so hopefully they will do the same. I’ve never encountered air horns, though! I think everyone should have a chance to cheer for their graduate, it makes the ceremony more meaningful to me if I can cheer for my kid. I think cheering should be enough, I hope no one brings in an air horn!
Dress requirements no ivory; excessive lace, sparkle; strapless and open backs…what teenage girl is going to wear this…I don’t think I could even…well let’s just say she met 3out5 requirements ;). They will not see the dress until 30 minutes before they walk…and if she does not get to, oh well by then everyone would have seen it anyway. At this point all she really wants is the diploma! She has already had her final transcript sent…
S’s graduation was yesterday. They wore royal blue caps and gowns (all boys) with gold neck sashes for NHS. I could not believe that I used only 1 tissue…after all the tears I’ve shed at various “last” events this month, I never expected that! The ceremony was lovely and it was in an auditorium on a local college campus, so no airhorns, confetti, crazy behavior, etc. Most graduates’ families did not even applaud, really – very respectful. We all went crazy clapping and cheering after the last boy crossed the stage, though! It was a very happy day.
Congrats to all those with “official” grads!! We’ve got cap/gown and ticket pick-up on Wednesday and ceremony Thursday evening before we can celebrate being “done”. Our ceremony is in a hockey arena, so it’s guaranteed there will be air horns, etc. that will spoil some family’s chance to hear their child’s name called. The majority of students will be sitting in random order, and they hand a name card to the MC as they walk on stage and their name gets read. We’re at the mercy of fate regarding the “obnoxious” level of the family of whichever grad precedes D2 and S.
@giterdone … You’re bringing back memories from 4 years ago :(( Freshman orientation in June, Nature of Life in July, Welcome Week in August…5000 miles on our vehicles but it certainly did make that summer fly by. :!!
Short term butt pain, but it was all worth it in the long run!!
Tying to empathize with you all on the white dresses. I have only boys, but the big deal where I live is National Charity League. The Senior Presentation requires the senior girls wear white dresses, but they can be strapless, etc. Just can’t have a train. The girls also have to have a tuxedoed escort, and that’s where I come in. I, apparently, am the Official Escort Provider to the National Charity League. My escorts come in assorted heights, clean up well, and dance. The first time one of my boys was invited, he came home saying it was a bit creepy seeing all these 18 year old girls in wedding dresses. Ha!
NCL is popular where we are as well. My D20 and I were “recruited” by friends in several different groups last summer, but it didn’t appeal to her. We volunteer together at the SPCA anyway, so there’s our mother-daughter volunteer experience.
@shoboemom We haven’t heard from you in a while. How is the end of the school year shaking out at your house?
YAY! My transcript is ready to go to WSU and I have completed all my other paperwork to be done with high school!
Congrats @Woverine86!! What wonderful validation for your son!
I don’t know if anyone remembers my moaning that my D would never pick a prom dress but we finally have a winner. After purchasing and returning 5 dresses, yes, 5 dresses, she ran over to a neighbor’s house Sunday afternoon and tried on a vintage dress that had belonged to her friend’s grandmother in the 60s or 70s. And yes, that dress is it. The good news is it fits like a dream and looks great on her and is FREE. If I knew how to do a falling over in a faint smiley I would. It’s kind of Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, her heart’s desire was in her own backyard the whole time!
White dresses are worn here for graduation and fortunately we found a very simple, cool cotton dress on sale. Of course, it might get returned…
Sending good Calc BC vibes to your son @singermom4!
@Scholarme, I too have a Ms. DoItLater-AtTheLastPossibleMoment in my house. I am trying to stay hand’s off and let her manage this but I can feel the tension rising in my neck. I think tonight is the night we sit down, look at deadlines and make a to do list. At least I will feel better knowing what to nag her about and when. What will I do for fun when she goes to college?
@LeftofPisa I have warned my D that I can nag her via text. To be fair I am also a terrible procrastinator. I read somewhere that it is genetic.
@albert69 you are so responsible! Congrats! I am in awe of your maturity.
Thanks @LeftofPisa - I think I’m more stressed than he is (probably because it’s completely out of my control)! . I know it’ won’t be much fun for him when all his friends are done with school and he is still studying - I keep telling myself that he put himself in this position but I still feel badly for him (just a little bit - mostly I’m angry).
We searched out the forms, but they were on the overall “what to do to get here and start in the fall” website. No separate email.
Found out health forms are due mid-JUNE, so just had him get a physical.
@scholarme If you were my mother you would not be in such awe.
Oh, and senior skip dayS? I’m glad my son doesn’t read this, it’s bad enough that he is taking one.
We always went to the beach on senior skip day, but I think we had our prom on a Thursday (cheaper for the school) so the day after the prom nobody who attended would want to go to school anyway.
