Wow. I’m way behind on both reading and music. I hope everyone who still has some school to go is hanging in there. Here’s the problem with me getting around to DJ’ing at the end of a long work day – I end up thinking something like, “You know what would be really great right about now, SOG? ‘Common People’ by Pulp. Except the William Shatner cover. And with a Lego-animated video! Yeah, that would be great, woudn’t it, Other SOG?”
It is a wrap here! Wrestler’s graduation was Saturday. The only tears I shed were tears of laughter. We had a perfect day!
Wrestler received his roommate’s name and contact information on Saturday too. He sent an email and text and has heard nothing in return. Should I be worried? I thought for sure all of the kids would be anxious to connect with each other.
He did get a suite in his first choice dorm for housing though. We are all happy about that. It is a beautiful dorm.
We are heading out next week for orientation and registration!
What do you think @albert69? Should I be worried that the rookie hasn’t responded to email or text? I did tell my S that it is possible what we think is a cell # may be a landline. But he was pretty sure the text would have bounced back.
@Wrestlermom Idk, maybe they just haven’t seen the email or text. I’m going to an encampment this week where I won’t have wifi or a phone for a week, so if someone messaged me I couldn’t reply until later. It could just be something like that.
Graduation here is not till next week. Tonight was the IB awards ceremony, which was very endearing as after all the IB candidates had received their “stoles” (basically polyester scarf thingies that they will drape over their graduation robes), the kids were given an “open mike” opportunity to thank their teachers, etc. So many of them gave such heartfelt thanks to the teachers who had really helped them throughout their time at this school. It was very sweet. This sort of thing must be what teachers live for.
Graduation here is a week from today!!! Suddenly I feel VERY motivated to start tackling party chores.
Things are pretty busy with DS '17 championship track meets (three of them; somehow there are three different sections/conferences that one could be a champion in ), DS '15 senior chorus concert, voice recital, sports banquet, awards night, and prom this weekend. But DD’14 is home and having everyone around the table again is such a blessing . Such great days right now.
My son still has almost a month of HS left, and he plays on several soccer teams with college soccer players. They practice really late so afterwards, they talk for a while and he has to leave so he can get to bed to get up at 6:30 am for school! Apparently they don’t have summer jobs or the jobs did not start yet.
I worked every summer after HS and between college years, but often had a few weeks off before I started.
My daughter won the Best Leading Actress in a Musical award last night! She also got to sing “I Hate Men” which went over very well, although the accompanist she rehearsed with had to go home sick so she didn’t know she had to work with a new one until she was already on stage! Live theater! I’m so proud!
Hey just a PSA to the folks here who will be purchasing a new laptop for the kids heading off to schools: most schools have a deal with computer companies that provide a discount. Check either with the retailer or with the college before you buy.
@GoAskDad last posted on here May 12th – we are thinking of you and @Mom24boys. Please check in when you can, but know good thoughts are coming at you both.
Congrats Irishmomof 2!!
Wrestlersmom I agree- that is a bit odd but I am sure there is a logical explanation and your S will eventually hear from the roommate.
Graduation is in approximately one month. I am trying to enjoy these last few weeks of senior year. My D has been communicating with her roommate but they have not been assigned a dorm yet. Orientation is in July.
Prayers and well wishes to GoAskDad and Mom24boys.
DC#2 still hasn’t graduated, but he’s already ruminating over his study abroad options (probably because DC#1 is heading out for that this fall). So many choices!
Just saw that I said that graduation is a week from today. A month! It’s a month from yesterday. Yikes, if it were a week I’d be in a dead panic right now! Time to start defrosting the 30 lbs of pork shoulder that I’m going to use for pulled pork BBQ. I’ll freeze it down again after it’s cooked. Then we’ll start planning cake . Between DS and me we’ve invited 120 people and I do hope the weather is nice. Otherwise it’ll be pretty crowded in here.
Last day of school was yesterday!! Yay! Graduation is next week. S is taking off this week and starts his job the Monday after graduation. Time to get started on the multitude of forms he has to fill out for school in the fall. He’ll fill out a roommate questionnaire but the kids at Stanford don’t get to pick their roommates or dorms. They hire 2 undergrads who spend the summer placing the kids. What a huge responsibility!!
At orientation, and college is becoming very real for DD. Last night was dinner with her roommate and her parents. Everyone liked everyone else a lot, and the girls are similar in what they want from dorm life, so it should work out. We split up who is bringing/paying for items that the girls are going to share: refrigerator, printer, micro, etc.
It finally hit DD hard that she’s moving on (even graduation last week didn’t seem as final as meeting her new roommate). She’s just uncertain if her new college friends will love and accept her the way her close high school girlfriends do. But I reassured her she will find her people.
Now for two days of learning her way around campus, meeting with her advisor, picking her courses, and a myriad of other stuff I can’t even imagine, as the days are packed.
Best wishes to everyone on here! I’m leaving today for a week-long CAP encampment. Still no room assignment yet or notification of the NMSC scholarship. At least I can forget about it for a week (or at least try) then hopefully get all the news at once when I return.
