Parents of the HS Class of 2015

Oh, some of my friends know. My best girlfriend and I are putting our heads together to come up with ways to get us together, and it helps to have her in on it because she lives right down the hall from him. So I can go up to her room ostensibly to visit her and “just happen” to run into my crush studying down the hall (which of course, she texted me beforehand telling me he was there.)

It is with sincere regret that I am finding myself in a position to change my CC screen name! Wrestler decided that college wrestling is not for him and decided to leave the team.

His dad and I were stunned by the decision. But after the shock wore off a bit (and I mourned this chapter in our lives), we need to just step back and be proud of all of his academic accomplishments. He is very academically motivated. And a math/physics double major is far from a cakewalk. So we will have to respect his decision.

So the suggestion door is open for new names!!!

On the positive side, he is very happy with his college choice, is making freinds, likes his roommates, and loves his professors! I guess that is what it is all about in the end, right??

I hope everyone’s kiddos are off to a great start at their respective institutions!

Hugs wrestlersmom, my son might not even do club soccer after playing soccer since he was 3 years old (and kicking a ball at 1 year old, not to mention other accomplishments…).

If they have club wrestling, he can try that. My son is looking into other sports, probably at a club level. I just hope he does something!

My son is an engineer, so I think that was part of his impetus to not be “too busy” first semester. There is a really good soccer player (like 3rd all-time) at the Ivy I went to, who was also an engineer, but he is taking at least five years maybe more to graduate…

Thanks, rhandco.

He said he really wants to participate in a few club/IM sports. The word “fraternity” was also thrown around so I don’t think he is planning to be a recluse by any means.

I know he was planning on joining a few academic clubs too.

I guess the biggest thing to be happy about is that he seems comfortable and in his element academically.

S is all moved in! Everything went great and we were in and done and out of there in about 3 hours. He was happy to see us go :). I am fine with it and happy for him but DH is already worrying about if he will come home next summer. And his office is 5 miles from the dorm so he will see him whenever he wants… he is seeing him Tuesday to take a few things we decided he needed. Lol. Roommate was not there for the move in but I saw him in front of the dorm when we left and made the embarrassing mom move of introducing myself. I had seen his picture on FB and recognized him.

How important do you all think the “armored trunk” is for a dorm room? Is there another good choice for security for valuables? Her room is small, and with a roommate, there is almost no place to put the trunk. The room was built for one, and this is going to be a very crowded situation. She can’t put anything under the bed - they are built-in captain’s beds with really inefficient, tiny drawers under the bed.

Also, my daughter picked up a huge (lightweight) tapestry type wall decoration. How do you put that up without putting holes in the walls?

@ladyArwyn, on another thread someone said a small lockbox that can be tied to the desk or bed post with a bike lock should do the trick. If you google ‘dorm safe’ there are a few, here is one: http://www.walmart.com/ip/15571801?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=3&adid=22222222227000635521&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=t&wl3=40939916552&wl4=&wl5=pla&wl6=78876082112&veh=sem
For wall hangings or poster or mirror’s etc, command strips really work. Both my S’s in college have many different types of items hanging on the walls and the strips work fine. Most colleges recommend their use.

Also just an fyi because it took me a while to figure it out ‘Command’ is the brand name and not part of the product descriptor - LOL!

I’ve also seen small lock boxes that can be screwed into a desk drawer but I’m guessing that’s not possible with dorm equipment. The above suggestion is great - I did send S with two locks in case he needs to secure something.

that is really funny about you being a girl, albert… I had read you as a girl all along until just last week when you wrote something maybe about liking a “girl” that made me pay attention and think, oh right name is albert, didn’t realize it was a boy all along. Now it turns out my first gut intuition was right! haha, I love that.

@1203southview Yeah, sorry for the confusion… I didn’t want to give the impression that I was gay, so I was trying to describe the guys I liked as girls, which was very difficult, believe me.

Gay would have been less strange. It is 2015 after all.

@FCCDAD I didn’t say it was strange, but it just isn’t me.

@Wrestlersmom, good luck with finding a new username. I understand where you’re coming from, my D has been in school orchestra since 3rd grade, was in chamber and regular orchestra, and in pit band for school musicals all through HS and was band president last year–and now she’s considering not trying out for orchestra, says she’s not really that musical?? :-?

However our drop off on Wednesday went smoothly and we were done with the bed-lofting, unpacking etc in 2 hours. Of course we realized we’d forgotten hangers, garbage liners, a mug for coffee/tea, wall decor but nothing too essential. And 3 days after move in spite of lots of angst etc beforehand she’s happy and has connected with people on her floor, has found a group of girls to have meals with and hang out with. They may take a bus to the nearest town (Amherst) this afternoon. A big relief after hearing stories of difficult adjustments!

can anyone post a link back to the list of where our kids are going?

@ITBgirl … I think this is the correct link.

@albert69 … Wait wait wait…it’s not possible for you to be a girl. Chicks can’t fly airplanes can they? :-?? :-"

@Wolverine86 Lol, well only a little over 6% of pilots are “chicks.” http://www.airspacemag.com/daily-planet/why-are-there-so-few-female-pilots-180954115/?no-ist

I’m a rare bird, pun intended.

And here’s a blonde joke for ya - what does a blonde do when she hears Approach Control say “say altitude” over the radio?

… :-c keys mike, “altitude.”

Other pilots in the area - 8-}

I’m actually surprised it’s still that low @albert69 . The B52 was one of the last platforms in the AF inventory to bring in female pilots, but there were several logistical issues that stood in the way…like no private bathroom!! Anyone who’s ever been a crewdog on a Buff had to quickly lose any sense of modesty. The number of female pilots in the civilian industry seems to be increasing steadily over the last several years, so hopefully that trend will continue.

^^^ Well, I’m trying to help that!

I “get” these newly fledged adults who are saying they don’t want to continue an activity they took part in for years. I played soccer as a kid, but when I hit adulthood it just wasn’t very interesting. I thought of it as a childhood interest, period. A kid’s game. I still think of soccer this way. It was time to move up to “adult” activities.

For most people it may not be a child’s game, or music a childish activity, or wrestling a childhood interest, but for someone who associates the activity with their childhood, then it is something to move beyond, for them.

@LadyArwyn … I may someday move past my childhood, but it’s worked so well for me during my first 50 years I figure…why fix it if it ain’t broke? :))
