Suzy - I’m glad your girl is happier and less stressed! That’s so important!

My older boys both sent their SAT II’s to schools they applied to that didn’t require them, as well as the ones who did. We figured it couldn’t do anything but help. S is taking the Math II this June.

As far as the free score reporting to 4 schools - we didn’t use them at all. i guess I just wanted to see them first and didn’t sweat the $9 to send them later.

I think we’ll do the same. $9x4 is what we throw away, compared to tution () or even application fees, that’s nothing. Thanks PN for the number.

@limner, thanks! The concert was so good. But I still feel the anger when I think about how the teacher treated D. But I should let it go. We’ll not have anything to do with this teacher anymore.

I asked in another thread about SAT II math. I read CB’s descriptions. they’re kind of vague to me. Can someone here give me a first person’s view about the difference between SAT subject Math I and math II?

Thanks PN - I agree! Just glad to have my old kid back. Thanks for the $ number for the tests too. She will hold off sending anything until she knows scores as well.

She has an interview for her first real job on Wednesday for the ever prestigious ice cream scooper position. :)

@Suzy100: From what I recall when my eldest went through the process was to sit the SAT II Math if the student will take pre-calculus or calculus AFTER they finish those courses. The curve for Math I is brutal, but more forgiving for Math II.

I’m having D wait until June of next year to sit the Math II subject test.

Does anybody else’s kid have so many tests? My daughter had 5 last week and 6 this week. There is not a week that goes by where she has fewer than 4. The marking period ends on Friday. Only 10 weeks left of school!!

@Suzi, yeah I think it’s better to look at the scores ourselves before sending them in too.

@twogirls, my daughter missed two days of school due to band. Now she has a ton of tests/homework to make up. Their AP chem teacher told them she didn’t care what they’d do after AP exam. The teacher is going to teach some forensics. but the seniors will be gone - there are total 8 in the class, 5 are seniors. so there will be 3 of them left after the exam! I can imagine it’s going to be fun time then.

My college freshman took both the Math I and Math II. He agreed with the conventional wisdom:

Take Math I after Algebra 2 (and after geometry)
Take Math II after PreCalc (if you’ve had calc, you’ll answer some problems faster, but there’s nothing you NEED calc for)
The curve on Math II is more forgiving.

My S is a very comfortable with math and he got a higher score on Math II than on Math I.

Yes this is the norm for the classes that she takes. I feel so bad for her because every time she finishes and thinks she is free to relax for 5 minutes, it starts again. She does not have any AP classes this year. She takes 10th and 11th grade honors classes, but some of them ( ie chem and global) are taught on an AP level. The global teacher uses the AP book and materials, and the chem teacher told them that she is getting them ready for junior year AP sciences. My daughter is doing well, but many are not because they simply are not putting in the time. Last year my daughter’s honors bio was also taught on an AP level. The bad news is that they have not been taking the AP tests. The good news is that my daughter aced the SAT 2 bio test without any extra studying because the school prepares them well and she really works. I realize that the SAT 2 is easier than the AP test ( or so I am told), but I think that the intensity of these classes, combined with some review, would allow some of these kids to pass the AP test. There are many kids in her chem class this year who are not doing as well as they would like to and can’t finish any of the tests. Lots of parents are complaining because the teacher is very hard and also rude and sarcastic. My daughter has learned to ignore the sarcasm and because she works so hard she always finishes the test and does well. Like I said the class is taught on an AP level so I am thinking why not just take the AP test? There are many kids who self study for the AP test and do well. She is taking two SAT 2’s in June- chem and lit. Lit should be fine because she is taking 11H this year and does well and my daughter is a huge reader. This high school does not mess around LOL. After the AP tests are finished and the kids think they can relax… Surprise!! The class continues and they move into the next level for the remainder of the school year.

Actually I would imagine that most schools ( at least the ones that end at the end of June) would naturally start teaching the next level once the AP tests are over. What else can they do for all those weeks?

Sorry for posting so much. I actually asked my daughter what the kids do after AP tests are finished. She told me that math and science classes move to the next level ( which makes sense) but classes like US history work on their research papers for the rest of the school year. My daughter went to bed last night at 11:15. Not bad considering that she was planning to be up until 2.

I must be having a " senior moment" lol. It was just brought to my attention that after the AP tests are finished they start reviewing for finals!! That makes sense. I have no AP experience other than what I am told by teachers and other parents. My daughter is not there yet.

After AP tests is an interesting period of time. D. will take SAT US history in June, so I sure hope she will keep learning history even after the test.

We received DD’s mid-term report over the weekend. B+ in English; the remaining course are A’s & A-'s…

DD is most proud of the B+…she transferred to private school from public school at the beginning of 9th grade and has been working very hard the last 18 months to improve her writing skills.

Softball season is in full swing, with 6 days/week of practice or games. DD also plays club field hockey, so she is managing her time very carefully to make sure school work, studying for tests and her semester term paper in History are all receiving proper attention.

She wants to be a collegiate athlete, so the time management skills she’s leaning & practicing now will come in handy.

^Props to your daughter for her time management skills Threesdad. My D also plays varsity sports and a club sport and wants to play in college. But I am not at all sure she is getting those time management skills down. At least not to the level needed to get through next year.

What happens after AP exams depends on the school, end dates, and the course. Some classes gimmick it so that the final exam is BEFORE the AP test. These tend to be classes full of seniors, and that end in late May or early June. Then the end of May is full of special treats f(ield trips and other fun stuff). Other classes start reviewing for the final, and covering material that the teacher thought was important, but not covered on the AP exam. The third approach I’ve seen is that after the AP exam is for larger, more involved projects. Lots and lots of high schools are done for the year by Memorial Day, so it’s really not much time if you’re not on the East Coast.

BunHeadMom, thanks for those links. My D will definitely pick Math as one of her SAT IIs.

Our school is out before the last week in May, so there’s not tons of time left after AP and IB tests.

This will be D’s first year taking AP tests. She has 3 AP classes. We’ll see how things go. This stuff was very easy for our S. I’m an oldest, so I have no idea what it’s like to come up after your older sibling–but I sure wouldn’t want to follow S.

He’s in Boston, so I had some tense moments after the explosions at the marathon, even though I thought it unlikely that he’d attended. No texts or calls were getting through, but he sent an email after about 45 minutes. Such a sad, sad day for Boston and the country.

Just checking on the comings and goings-we have school vacation week and she is enjoying a much needed rest! Well she hurt her shoulder yesterday at practice so that is a bit concerning-but her club sport is soccer so she won’t need her arm tomorrow-I gave her the night off from soccer practice last night though anyway.

Someone asked the reason for SAT Subject tests-the only reason she will take them is to have them if she wants to apply to the schools that require them. She is thinking about the ACT and is going to look that over this summer-I believe many schools will take that in lieu of Subject Tests-the ACT with Writing.

She also has constant tests twogirls-I lose track but it seems every week she has several.

She decided about the AP Lit class-she is going to take that and reworked her schedule so she is now going to take the extra science and is going to double up on Math senior year. I don’t know how she is going to do this but she has it all figured out-I think she is biting off more than she can chew but it is her call-I am proud of her for being so ambitious but will keep an eye on her as she is also planning to go back to her original favorite sport next winter-but if she does she will have to drop club soccer-which she is OK with. I must say she is definitely driven and motivated-but this week on her vacation she is in total rest mode for studies-they didn’t load them up with work for a change.

She is really excited about looking at colleges on line and is looking at the very good (not “elite”) schools on the east coast-really from the mid-Atlantic into the Carolinas-and we are working out the whole ranking situation versus fit-and she seems to understand the value of a safety school that she can not only reasonably expect to get into but also that we can afford-this process is like night and day from how it was with her brother-they are different in so many ways but I am also so much more prepared this time!

My son was at the Marathon finish line last year and would have been this year except he is on COOP and was at work well outside the city. His friends who had the day off were down there-fortunately for them no one of his crew were hurt but it has been a very tough time as we all know for so many and the entire community.
