Pepper, I have to keep an eye on my D for the opposite reason: that she bites off way less than she can chew.

Although, itâs all relative. Sheâs taking 3 APs (one of which she dropped her love, musical theatre, to take, which was totally her decision) and the rest honors except for electives, and she does all her work without me asking anything about it.

I was worried that my S had the day off, but his internship is at a federal center so he wasnât off, and he said his school wasnât off either, which surprised me. Pepper, Iâm glad your son is on COOP.

IJD, itâs hard as an oldest to have that perspectiveâeven harder to tell if youâre actually seeing it correctly.

My oldest was at the marathon but he left 1/2 hour before it was finished. I am very thankful heâs ok but he was shaken up. We and he have been praying for all those affected.

The good news for my 2015er is that he passed the proficiency exam (here in California, it gives you the equivalence of a high school diploma, though you donât need to gradaute) so he can now take community college classes in the fall, providing he can actually get into them.

So now I am rethinking his schedule. He needs to take some placement exams in math and English. He needs foreign language and wanted to learn Polish with a tutor, but it would be much cheaper at the CC, so I am thinking he might take Russian. He also wants to take biology, auto mechanic classes, and programming (Python, maybe Flash) as well as art and guitar. I might have him do math at the CC, as well. I definitely donât want him overwhelmed (I think 10 units or less is best), though, and he still wants to be with his friends at the homeschool co-op. Lots to figure out!

Oh, and weâll need to visit the âStudents with Disabilitiesâ office to see what they might offer him since he gets accommodations. Thereâs much to do.

Oh yeah (again)-my son will also be having surgery on his ear in the near future. He has hearing losses (mild in both ears) but a severe loss in one ear due to fluid. Heâll go under general anesthesia but it will only be a 10 minute surgery to put the tube in. Iâm glad he agreed to do it as it will help him with his cello playing.

We joked with him-if you have your ear surgery, your eye surgery, and you get an artificial pancreas, you can be the bionic boy! :-)

Whatâs the best way to check? Should we just check their webpage? What if we canât find answers to our questions? Is it okay to call the admissions to ask questions like SAT requirements?

herandhisMom â check the webpages first. Usually the info is in the university catalog. If you canât find the info online, try emailing undergraduate advising or the Deanâs office.

Itâs always best if the query comes from the prospective student, rather than a parent. For the schools that care about such things, this is what they mean when they talk about âtracking interest.â So for those schools, cc: any email to the admissions office, and be sure to include full name and date of birth so they can sort a record of the contact into the applicantâs file.

sbjorloâcongrats for your son passing the proficiency exam! It sounds like you have some neat options to choose from going forward. Also, I am glad to hear he is getting his ear surgery. Al the best to you and your S!

Checking in from TN, GoAskDad. I guess we really do have lives outside CC. Or maybe we were just trying to act like we do. ;)

sbjdorlo, congrats to your son!

I have nothing to report except that D is taking practice AP tests at school (even one on Saturdayâsheâs a trooper).

Weâre also going to Boston for Sâs graduation from grad school. Weâre all going to Maine after that (Iâve never been!) and then going to see some schools, hopefully while some are still in session.

Funny I was planning to check in soon as well! I signed my daughter up to take the June 8th SAT 2 in literature and chem. Every week she has about 5-6 tests itâs crazy. Making up a long list of colleges to visit and narrow down. I am looking forward to the summer!!

Iâm still here. Like TwoGirls, weâre planning school visits, but based on core requirementsâless is better for BunHeadGirl.

We had Lawrence U of WI on the list, but scratched that school off after D said she had to take roughly 54 credits within very restricted guidelines. Core Curriculum was something I never though about before D put her foot down.

Hi all! Iâve been really crazy busy at work and have not had much time to surf.

D is heading into the home stretch - 5 weeks left I think. Sheâs got the APUSH exam, and then the SATII in US History the first of June. May is going to be hectic with finals, end of year festivities, grad parties, getting her license, plus I have to go out of town for a week, and Iâm sure that will be the week for all of the recognition ceremonies, etc. I think she got the ice cream job. :)

We heard yesterday that she did very well on the National French Exam. 5th ranking (not the 5th highest score!) but I think she is in the top 200 of about 19500 kids who took it. I believe it will be a bronze medal, which is nice. Sheâs probably going to pursue a French degree of some sort, so Iâm happy for her.

Not sure about college visits this summer - Iâve got mixed feelings.

sbjdorlo, I hope your sonâs surgery goes well!

My daughter is in honors chem and had a test today. She has 2 tests every week in this class. Thankfully she is doing well. She just showed me her homework in chem for this evening ( remember she had a full period test): she has to read 32 pages from her text book and do 30 problems/questions. Thatâs just one class. She still has 5 other classes! Is this chem homework a lot considering they had a test today, or is this normal? sBj I also hope your sonâs surgery goes well.

twogirls, when you say a test, how many points is the test worth? Iâm wondering if the teacher gives small âtestsâ (aka quizzes) to make sure they are keeping up? It seems like my dâs math teacher does that. That does seem like an awful lot of homework, though, test today or not.

The teacher calls them tests although they are not always out of 100 points. Although my daughter finishes the tests, at least half the class consistently does not. Today there were 12 kids who went late to their next period and missed the beginning. I was told the teacher sent an email because she was annoyed.
