Oops!! I just looked at the ticket and it is 6/1 !! That would not be good if she missed the test LOL.

@Apollo6, Wow, that really does look like Hogwarts. What a wonderful opportunity, congrats.

@twogirls, what a relief - for me too. I also went to double check, because D. has an important recital on the 8th. :)

Too many things to keep track of! And the college process has not really started yet!

I think it’s time for us all to purchase one of those desk blotter calendars to hang up on the back of a door. I keep important dates on phone calendar, but never hurts to have a paper back-up plan in order to see at a glance what’s coming up.

Apollo11 – Welcome! It’s great to have an actual HS’er on the list. We had several in my D1’s grad-year list (HS 2012/College 2016), and they still post even now and keep us updated.

Apollo6 – Last weekend I had lunch with 7 UWC students while visiting a 2012’er (close family friend) at College of Idaho. UWC is a super-selective program, and the students have to jump through many hoops just to apply. So congrats to your son on being selected. Every single one of the students I met was articulate, bright, well-travelled, and cosmopolitan in their outlook. UWC is a fabulous program!

Question about SAT subject test in math

My daughter is in Algebra2/Trig this year. Math is her strongest subject. I assume she will take the Math 2 exam next year after pre-calc. Is it worth taking the math 1 this year if she knows she will take the math 2 next year?

Hi VMT and welcome! I believe conventional wisdom is to wait to take the Math 2 exam.

Question: I signed D up for the USH SAT2 a few weeks ago. Do they send a ticket or something in the mail?

I don’t remember getting anything in the mail for D’s SAT subjects–she brought a printout of the confirmation page from the website and I’m 99.9% sure that that’s what she’s supposed to do for this June’s session coming up.

The ticket is printed from the web site. I think last year for the bio test we got a reminder email and ticket (?) sent to us as well.

VMT – there’s no point in taking Math 1 if the kid is going to take Math 2. But if you think that your kid might not take Math 2, it’s worth considering. Remember that the scoring on Math 1 is harsher than the scoring on Math 2.

Our approach has been to minimize the amount of testing and to test as early as feasible. I worry about the timing a lot, but I try not to share my worrying with anyone else :-)

LOL I didn’t realize that we have TWO Apollos now. I looked at Apollo and thought they were the same person.
this is funny. Welcome!

@VMT, I agree with IJD, if she’ll take math II, don’t worry about math I.

OK. Thanks everyone for your replies!

Thank you crepes and twogirls!

D. just signed up for the classes next year. She’ll have 3 APs.

We are looking ahead for senior year. I know it’s early, but I’d like to hear some opinions. Right now we are looking at 5 classes she will take from her high school in the senior year. She’s very interested in a course in a local college, so she may do that. That’s 6 classes. (college course is half of the school year.) We are thinking maybe just do 6 periods, because she will have a lot to do to apply for college. Will that look bad for her college application though? In her school, many seniors (including very good ones) have on free period. But she doesn’t want to give the colleges any bad impression, like being lazy, not wanting challenge, etc., and she wants to apply for some very good colleges.

Please advice. Thanks.

There are many kids from our high school that have been accepted into great schools and have gotten home early their senior year. That being said, my daughter will be taking AP calc, AP bio, IB English, SUNY/college Spanish, honors economics, lab/gym, an elective- wants to take some type of literature elective, and lunch. It looks like she will be there all day!!

h@hMom – I think there are two questions – 1) is it going to hurt her chance? (maybe, maybe not); 2) is it going to help her chance? (probably not (IMHO)). Given that, I am not sure if I’d recommend that. But, I have no direct experience.

D is busy getting ready for her APs exams (3), SATII (1), and the finals. On top of all the school stuff, she recently got a part time job shelving books at the library - $7.80/hr, 10 hours/week. I am spending more money on gas than she is making but she wants to do it so I am supporting as best as I can… Tomorrow she has an interview with Circuit Court summer internship program (not paid). Basically running around the court house and learn how the system works. Still waiting for summer internship program @ National Institute of Health response (job duty - assistant lab rat)… It’s a slim chance but hoping for the best. So, D’s summer plan is still fuzzy. A lot of pieces still unsettled. Poor thing is trying to keep her head above the water for few more weeks.

Apollo 6,

Congratulations!

herandhismom,

If she’s using the extra time for other interesting activities, I don’t see it as a problem at all. My oldest’s senior year was his lightest academically but he was doing a lot of music as well as working, working in a lab, and doing math/physics competitions, so he was plenty busy.

Congratulations Apollo6! And welcome Apollo11.It will be interesting to have a hser in our thread.

D’s speech state championship didn’t go well. She was very disappointed.I myself was very upset. She did very good.she practiced so much.Since i judge these events i knew she was good. It’s not that she didn’t win or qualify for semi’s.Her rankings was so low which i thought she didn’t deserve to be placed so low because her topic of speech was selfishness is a good thing .i did not know this would be such a controversial topic.I suggested her from day one to choose a different topic she wouldn’t listen to me.sorry for all the ranting.
I met with D' counselor today and she said iam going to go crazy if i keep analyzing things.D wants to major in psychology or English. Is it ok to take AP Psychology in junior year and do AP environmental science senior year? That would make only 3 sciences. Will that make a big impact in admissions? The counselor says it might not.It depends on the person that looks at her case in the admissions office. And the journalism teacher wants her to continue for two more years.Lot of decisions to make.

I need to get the virtual glass of wine out again!

It is so much easier for us, the second time round. I am not looking that far forward to be planning senior year with D2… Too many fluid things. D2 took Latin this semester and loves it. She didn’t think she would take Spanish past Spanish IV, but has an amazing this teacher this semester and has just been elected secretary for Spanish Club. I think she will be re thinking continuing languages into senior year… and that’s the way high school should be. Time to explore new classes.

Tripleamom- sorry the Speech contest didn’t go well. She has 2 more years and will probably pick a less controversial topic next time.

How are our student athletes doing? Any kids making it into state play offs?
