Parents of the HS Class of 2015

My daughter will have 2 AP her junior year ( physics B and Spanish) and one IB HL English class which is a 2 year class. Senior year she will have the IB English, AP bio, and AP calc. Grand total of 6 AP/ IB classes. The rest will be a combination of honors and college classes taken at the HS. Guidance told me that as long as you have taken honors, IB, and AP then they will check " most rigorous" on the college app. Thankfully it is not necessary to take every single AP that the school offers. I guess she may qualify for the lowest level AP scholar award- ?? If she does that is fine, and if not that’s fine too!! We have 3 ACT books and an SAT book with 10 practice tests sitting on my kitchen table. Every weekend she will do a practice test; hopefully 2 if she is ambitious. They are all going to be quite busy soon!! She is also taking some type of business law college class which shocked me. I guess it’s nice to try new things. Meanwhile I have been making college lists- by the time guidance meets with them to discuss colleges this will all be old news to her. Some schools need a recommendation from guidance for certain scholarships so I wanted to put all of my info together. This is another part time job…my older one comes home soon and my family will be whole again!! Yippee!! An added perk is that I have another driver!

Ugh I just re-read my post and realized that I sound like her manager instead of her mother!!

Many Colleges also limit the amount of credit given for AP classes. Best to check that out, if that’s your strategy (gaining college credit).

LOLLLLL

I remember meeting the parents of one of my (college) students who transferred to our school. I met them when they first came to visit. The mother talked to me about courses her son had taken and what he still needed to take, etc. She sounded like an expert! She knew more than I did. Later I got to know the student better. So I asked him if his mother was an engineer or physicist. he said “not a clue.” I asked how she knew so much. He said “because I’m the only thing she thinks about.” :D

@twogirls, I don’t think you’re like that, probably not. But MOTHERS! feel for us!

Maxwell, you are right. My memory didn’t serve me right. Probably  .

I came across a college in the admissions thread on CC. Very interesting. Its called Deep Springs college in California.Apollo6,somehow I thought of your S when I read about. He might like it. It is very selective. Only 23 students per year and full ride. Is a male only college. They are petitioning to include girls too in coming years.

Sally22, are there any reasons other than you mentioned to not send your D to Oxford that you could share with us?

D15 is going to concert in San Diego on Saturday. The whole day will be gone. With the AP exams the following week , I am not happy about this. I cannot complain since I am the one who got her the tickets. I thought the concert was at 6 in the evening so if she was there around 4 it should be enough. But D wants to stand in line form 1’0 clock, its too much. So I am trying to convince her to go late.
The last day of school for us is 14th of June. More than a month to go.

D. said AP chem today was really hard. Did anybody else have student who did AP chem today?

@tripleamom, I really like that emoticon you used. what is it? :D

Maxwell, the emoticon is for “confused” . My friend’s Sis taking chem today. I will ask her.

My D’s friend took it (AP chem) and she said she got so lost!

Thanks, TripleAMom, Deep Springs is intriguing isn’t it. They almost went coed this year. DS is going to finish high school at a school of 350 students. He’s never been at a school that small except in preschool. I wonder what he’d think of a school with less than 50!

Good luck to all the test takers! How many more weeks of school for your kids? My younger kids are counting the days until we travel to NM for D13’s graduation.

S has two weeks left and today, right smack in the middle of AP tests, English teacher assigns a huge video-production group project due next Monday :(

Good luck to all those taking APs this week!

I just got off the phone with Collegeboard after more than an HOUR of waiting for someone to help and then wrangling with them. D is signed up to take the chem subject test on June 1 but the registration was completely screwed up. Warning to those who have taken the SAT in middle school: that old registration follows you to high school and the profile created then isn’t so easily changed.

D1’s friend went to Deep Springs and thoroughly loved it. It’s very rustic, very small, and very intellectual. It’s also completely self-governed. Is the program still only two years, requiring a transfer?

I don’t think the AP Scholar Award means anything but then my D’s school has chosen to move away from AP tests.

@Maxwell, my D. also thinks today’s AP chem is VERY hard. I just looked at comments on CC. That seems to be a consensus. My D. did two year’s sample test, plus some princeton samples. she said today’s test was harder than all of them.

@STEMFamily, same here - D’s English teacher gave them a huge project. This whole year they haven’t had much homework in English. Now the teacher decided AP exam time is also time for her to give the homework.

3girls my daughter also took the SAT in middle school and last year I had a rough time registering her for the bio SAT. They asked for her middle school ID number, had to call CB etc. Then it was saying that my email was already in use- well yes…!!! It took awhile to straighten it out, but now this year she is successfully registered for the tests( Lit and chem). No AP chem for us this year!! Our HS only offers honors chem as a sophomore. Seven more weeks of school for us!!!

Twogirls, that pretty much sums up our experience.

There’s no AP chem for sophomores at D’s school either, just honors.

School is over the first week of June. Only 5 more weeks!

Just wanted to say Hi. I’m joining here since I have a D who is a sophomore. Only Honors Chem at her school (they are moving away from APs, starting with the sciences) and no APs until next year. One more month to go! :)

@herandhisMom Aggravating isn’t it? This teacher is one of the laziest we have seen. I’m convinced that she gave this assignment both to keep them busy this week (although it will take far more than class time) and then so she can spend the rest of the semester watching their presentations and grading on the spot. Heaven forbid that she should assign an essay and actually spend time outside of class grading it! My S hasn’t had any useful comments on anything he’s written all year, usually just a numerical grade entered in the online gradebook. Most of the time they never see their paper or test again once it has been turned in.

Welcome mamabear- cute name! My daughter has also had teachers this year who gave no feedback on papers. Her global teacher was actually giving every kid the same grade all the time on each paper even though some kids worked for weeks and were clearly way ahead of others in terms of writing. My daughter actually stayed after one day and expressed to her that she needs comments on her papers and actually became a little teary eyed. The teacher saw what was happening and now writes things on the paper besides a grade. Same in English- the English teacher was not giving any feedback at all. Only a grade. My daughter was getting frustrated. 16 kids dropped out of the class- now the class has 15 kids ( it was big). Something must have happened because now she is teaching better and giving comments - not just a grade. Once things were straightened out she turned into a great teacher. All in all my daughter had a fantastic year but worked her tail off. We are very ready for summer!!

May 23rd is last day of school, D2 is counting down. 2 AP exams next week and then finals the last 2 days Wed and Thurs. I think she is exempting AP World and the other classes she has high A’s. I don’t think she is concerned about Finals- just studying hard for AP’s.
She made me smile this morning, she left early for school. I asked what she was going in early for. Her reply " Hugs". That acronym always makes me smile.( Human Geography)

D1 has her last final this morning. I am heading to her apartment tomorrow to help her pack up. I get to have her home till Sat before she heads off to Argentina : (

The girls are planning something for Mothers Day, since d1 won’t be here on Sunday. Lots of secret phone calls.

Our kids are almost half way through high school- yikes!
