Has she considered schools further north such as Muhlenberg, Colgate, Hamilton etc?

OHMom…All from Miami from what our friends said. I believe at least some of them are departmental scholarships, and I thought they mentioned that one may be tied to housing. They are Ohio residents, so I don’t know whether any of them were strictly for IS students or not. If D2 decides to look further into Miami I plan to dig deeper into the scholarship question and we’d do a return trip sometime next year. D2’s stats are slightly better than both of our friends’ sons and they got the full tuition scholly…so we’re hopeful she’d receive it as well. That would bring it down to affordable level for us so it’s certainly up for discussion if she’s interested.

I sent you a PM - thanks for the info.

twogirls:
This goes a few pages back because this board has really been busy today! New Mexico is known for green chile so almost any Mexican or New Mexican dish can come with red chile, green chile, or a mix of red/green called “Christmas.”

We will have to take another look at the engineering school at Miami for DS. I had forgotten about their great merit deals even if you aren’t NMF.

Darn it. Miami doesn’t have civil engineering and that is one of the majors that DS may be interested in :(

Thanks Stem sounds yummy!! Are you talking about Miami- Ohio? I notice that two kids from our school got some nice merit from that school- $20,000. Brings the cost down to the mid 20’s.

Yes twogirls, Miami OH has some awesome merit for IS and OOS students: [University Merit Scholarships | Miami Scholarships | Scholarships | High School Students | Financial Aid | Admission | Miami University](<a href=“Costs, Scholarships, and Financial Aid | Miami University”>Costs, Scholarships, and Financial Aid | Miami University)

We here in NJ have today and tomorrow off so I took DD on her first college tour…at The College of New Jersey.

Bopper, what did you think?

Our tentative long weekend college visits are officially off. D was invited to participate in a hackathon over the weekend and all of her exhaustion has miraculously vanished, lol.

I thought it would be a good fit for her. ~6000 undergraduates with an undergraduate focus. She wants pre-med and they seem to have a good program. Students seemed very friendly and looks like they have a good Freshman Experience which will be crucial for my anxious daughter. Price looks right for me! Not too far from home which is what she wants.

Looks like I may keep University of Miami Ohio on the list!! Bopper I work at a school in NJ and everyone keeps asking me if we are doing college visits. The only problem is that I live in NY where schools are open!! One of my co-workers was going to look at TCNJ.

(How do you do the quote thing from an iPad? )

Re SOG, “finally BAMA is paying as much for scholars as for football players”…now that’s an awesome thought to start the day with! Thank you!

And thank you all for some great new ideas for my S, who may be exactly the type to get what he needs out of a small honors college in a big university. We are also from NY, so thinking hard about the SUNY system. Buffalo had not been on the radar before, but it sure is now. The Midwest and southern options sound like good things to look at also.

Also great to hear the comments from those of you whose older kid went with the fit and is getting a top flight education, not because of the name or despite the name, but because of the student’s own engagement with the surroundings. Fantastic news, and good for all of us to hear it. Really relieves the anxiety.

Re family’s unhelpful helpful comments, strongly support “just smile and nod”.

We took DS on his 1st visit last month during MEA (2 days off for teachers conferences). He saw Bethel University (Roseville, MN). He wasn’t initially interested in going, but came away pleasantly surprised.

Giterdone it’s always nice when your kid walks away pleasantly surprised by a college visit. We have not gotten there yet LOL. So far my kid likes the schools that we thought she would like, or does not like the schools we thought she would like ( does that make sense?). The reverse has not happened.

^perfect sense.

We only went because; its close to home and I decided to sign up for it (for him :)) as a trial run. It’s in the MIAC (a collection of good MN located LA colleges and universities).

All MIAC schools give good merit aid, are well regarded and otherwise provide good experiences.

He’s our youngest of 4. Learning from experience; our 2 oldest S’s picked the local State flagship without visiting any other school. Our DD visited 20’ish, and applied to 7.

DS '15 won’t get really excited about the college search. He’s very much a “bloom where planted” guy - he could go to the State U or a small LAC and do just fine either way… this was a way for us to dip a toe in the water and see his reaction.

Sounds like it worked for you!! Narrowing down a list for my daughter ( there are about 22 on the list) will be tough because she does not really have criteria yet ie big/small etc. she basically told me that she could love a school with 3,000 the same as a school with 25,000- when the school is right she will know. She is not making this job easy. Our next big trip is in February, when I hope she can get rid of a certain category ( ie no school below 3,500 etc).

quote from my new favorite TV show: You know the problem with drawing lines in the sand? With a breath of air, they disappear

Some big schools do a great job of appearing intimate, while some small schools sprawl way more than necessary. The only advice I have is; tell her to trust her instincts. She’ll feel it - and she should go with that feeling, regardless of prestige or ratings or whether or not it meets her imagined picture of college, right now.

The standard line from large schools is this: you can make a big school into a small school, but you can’t make a small school into a big school."

I like your quote- very true.

D is away this weekend attending Model UN conference at UVa. She was working feverously last night writing her country’s position paper on global warming. It’s a nice distraction since she’s showing signs of stress lately.

SlackerMom - we looked at St. Mary’s closely when S2 was looking around. While he decided for UMD-cp, sounds like it might be what your D is looking for. The campus is so quiet and beautiful by the Bay. It felt more like a retreat place than a school to us.

FromMD, how many schools did your S2 apply to? The numbers I’ve been hearing from older friends (current seniors) are a bit intimidating
(10, 15). twogirls, one senior friend still has 20+ schools on her list.
