Bama is finally paying as much for scholars as they do for football players. What’s not to love?

Sally22, some of the southern schools that we are investigating include Tulane, Furman, Wake Forest, Elon, UNC-CH, Vandy and UofR. I have no idea if they fit all of your criteria, (operative word being “investigating”) but just wanted to throw them out there for you.

ETA: Some would clearly require merit aid to be affordable for us.

OSU-Miami…I think a lot of kids choose one or the other based on factors like money, size, sports, city v small town. Miami is thought to focus more on undergrads than OSU, also has a “preppy” rep that appeals to some.

Me neither, but I get why - it’s the full tuition scholly for stats. Not only NMF but 32/1400 and 3.5 out of staters get full tuition. http://scholarships.ua.edu/types/out_of_state.html That makes it a good financial safety for a lot of people. Pretty campus, honors college, the out of state big U experience…for just the price of room and board. Of course there are other U’s that offer a similar deal but I think until Temple in Philly started, no others that D would be particularly interested in.

I know how Georgians feel about Alabama…as I recall it’s something like NYers and NJ ;)

3girls - South Carolina Honors is not easy to get in - they have 8 essays to write!!! This year they admitted about 350 students into Honors out of a freshman class of about 5000. They have much more rigid requirements too. To graduate with honors you have to take an honors class (AP credit doesn’t count) in every discipline - encourages a well rounded education. Although I know a few friends of my DD who are International Business Majors that took AP Chem and AP Physics and got 4’s and 5’s that thought they were done with lab sciences and still have to take an Honors Level Science class at USC. My DD has to take an Honors level History which she was not counting on (she got a 5 on APUSH). Most Honors Colleges do not have these types of requirements but that is why South Carolina was ranked the #1 Honors College in Public U’s.

If quality of undergraduate teaching is a prime consideration, Miami is a heck of a deal.

Suzy- UofR?

Sorry, University of Richmond.

UT (University of Texas at Austin) is the state flagship, not UTA. Here people refer UTA as University of Texas at Arlington, which is very different from UT-Austin.

Both The OSU and Miami sound very appealing to S2, but dont think his GPA will be high enough to qualify. :(

S2 is adding schools to his list by watching college football games. I think I need to group schools by conferences, Big 12, Big 10, SEC, etc. LOL

If that’s the criterion, you should add the PAC 12. That’s the most entertaining league in college football these days.

^^ Miami’s guaranteed merit scholarships are based on the weighted GPA if your school provides it.

Sunnydayfun. My S15 is right with you with dividing his potential colleges by conference! Remember the Ivy League is an athletic conference!

Boy- you go out to the supermarket for a little bit and you miss a lot!! Schools in the south: we are actually heading south in February to see Duke, Emory, UMD, Wake Forest, U of Richmond and UVA. WF and U of R are not schools that our HS typically sends kids to- I learned about them on CC. Are they within driving distance of Atlanta? LOL I am clueless, but somebody asked ( Sally or Suzy?).

The University of Florida is gaining a lot of popularity with kids from our HS. Clemson also seems to occasionally come up in conversation. These schools are not far from Atlanta ( compared to NY).

Ahsmuoh, oh yeah, I can definitely see that South Carolina is a reachy proposition but the rigor, advising, size within the larger school, and price tag is very appealing.

OHmom-Thanks for that info. S2 will be very happy to know.

SomeOldGuy-I have. Actually S2s dream or beyond reach school is in PAC 12.

3girls it looks like a great school, and very difficult to get into. The more schools I learn about the harder it will be to narrow down the list. I just have to remind myself that it’s not my job- it’s my daughters!

twogirls, WF may be “on the way” to Atlanta from New York but I think it involves a detour. From what I remember, once you’re in North Carolina, you just drive down I-85 until you hit Atlanta but North Carolina is a long state to drive through. To get to Wake Forest, you need to go west from Greensboro an hour (?), maybe 45 minutes.

D is determined to go to a small college so all these flagship schools are out of the running. She dislikes crowds and, well, people so even an honors college within an university wouldn’t work. She already nixed UMDCP and UMBC as too large. I’ve suggested the smaller public colleges from SMCM to New College of Florida to UMinnesota-Morris to UNC-Asheville.

Slacker how far from home is she willing to go?

sunnyday…Sorry, I got lazy and just didn’t fully type out UT Austin. I should’ve known better since we were stationed in Ft Worth back in our military days and knew a lot of folks that took classes at UT Arlington. :)

I actually had a scheduled day off back in the first week of October (vacation time is hard to come by these days) and drove the kids down to Oxford to tour Miami (OH). Their stat-based scholarship money would cover at least half tuition up to full tuition for D2, and some friends of ours have 2 sons there with stacked merit scholarships equaling a near full-ride. We thought the campus was really beautiful and Oxford had a nice “college town” feel to it. We didn’t get a chance to meet with any of the academic departments since it was a short notice trip, but overall we got a really good feel about Miami. Cincy/Dayton are only about 45-60 minutes away should an overwhelming need for a “bigger city fix” arise.

All from Miami or stacked with outside scholarships?

twogirls, D has joked that I am willing to send her as far as possible :)

Her main criterion regarding distance is that the college has to be at very least two hours away from home. D has said anywhere except the South but then she wants to look at Hendrix and Eckerd and UNCA, so I’m not too sure what her definition of “South” is.
