Parents of the HS Class of 2015

@ahmsmuoh, Thanks for sharing.

D. is in band camp. Her school starts in 1.5 weeks. Summer is over. She’ll have a busy but exciting school year.

@ahmsmuoh, Thanks for sharing. I second this!

My girl started back today. Should be an interesting year…

First day here too. S seemed to have a good day. Of course, out of four classes, he had study hall and choir, so really - how bad could it be? The bigger news is, that after 2 or 3 weeks of no air conditioning, the repairman is here right now! Wheeeee!

My D still has over 3 weeks before she starts school! Thanks for the precal/SAT II advice - very helpful to know!

S is starting to sound like the seagulls from “Finding Nemo” who said “Mine, mine, mine”, except he says “Can I drive, can I drive?”

School started yesterday and he’s still trying to get his schedule right. He got the wrong Algebra II teacher and will have to drop PE to get the right one. He loves PE so this is a bummer. He’ll have to take Computers for an elective instead. His Geometry teacher had surgery so they have a substitute for the first month of school-I hate that! It seems like a whole month lost to me.

We’ve started sports practice but have 3 weeks until school starts.

In the surprise category: I’ve been on D’15 since June to do her summer assignments but haven’t had any luck. Finally, the other night I came home at midnight and she was up studying. I asked her what she was doing and she said her summer assignments. I figured they must have been due the next day or something, but she said they weren’t. The next morning I found out she was up until 5 am doing them. This morning she set her alarm for 7 am, after getting to bed at midnight, and got up early to work on another assignment.

I’ve decided she’s a riddle wrapped in an enigma; but doesn’t that describe most women to us guys :)

Ezilyamused, we are having schedule problems here as well. D thinks she wants to drop choir (long story, still wants to pursue next year, she did not get the class she wanted and is in with a bunch of juniors and seniors who don’t care about it) so I’m trying to get some help from her guidance teacher. Her guidance teacher sent me a quick note this morning saying that D can take Health in this spot (it’s required at some point) but may have to take study hall next semester, which neither D nor I want. She then added that D has to decide by tomorrow (!) but that she is essentially booked today dealing with Juniors and Seniors. UGH - SO frustrating.

I’ve decided she’s a riddle wrapped in an enigma; but doesn’t that describe most women to us guys. :p

PN: glad you are getting your A/C back! I’m in the midwest (think you are too) and it’s supposed to be 90 here today. Could NOT handle that with no A/C. Well I suppose I could, but it would be ugly.

S2’s schedule pickup is this morning. S2 said to me “I’ll go by myself. You don’t need to come.” In a way I am glad. I do have a lot to do in the office today since we are taking S1 back to college tomorrow. OTOH I miss visiting with other parents… Maybe he’ll call me and ask me to come to fix class schedule or something…

Thanks Suzy! Actually, it won’t be done until next week. We have some duct work issues to take care of first, and the man installing it is doing part of the job yesterday and today, then driving his D to her first year in college, then finishing on Monday. We’re fine with that - after today (which is only supposed to be 87), it will be highs in the '70s until it’s done. It’s been out for a while though, and yes - those 97 degree days were killers!

I hope the schedule hassles clear up in a good way. We’re so lucky here that the choir program at S’s school is so fun and popular, including with the juniors and seniors.

Choir is a big deal at our school, we are fortunate to have such a wonderful and professional choir director–wish the same could be said for orchestra.

Today we join the ranks of the rest of the country of temperatures in the 90’s–no one has air conditioning in their homes because it really only gets hot like that for a few days at most in the summer.

School doesn’t start until after Labor Day. D15 is out of town visiting her cousin. And she still hasn’t finished her summer reading yet!

She decided not to go out for the soccer team this year. She loves soccer but isn’t very good at it. She was never a fast enough runner, and last year, they either had a game or a 2.5 hour practice every single school day until mid-November. I know schools like to see committment to EC activities, but I guess she’ll stick with Chorus and being in the plays and maybe participate in Relay for Life and other community service.

SanSerif - I’m glad your D is doing what she wants and not drowing herself in EC’s because colleges may w want to see that! By freeing up her time, she’ll be able to notice and participate in something else that comes along that she may never had tried otherwise! In the meantime, she’s protecting her free time by not over scheduling. :)

School starts for us on the 27th. My daughter has finished her English work, is working on her French work, and is putting off her Algebra II work. She needs to finish it by the weekend because her grandparents are visiting next week. I’d hate to make her stay home from fun outings with them so she can finish that Algebra II packet.

She tried out for the tennis team but didn’t make it. She’s actually okay with the outcome and said, “Well, I’ll just practice more and try again next year.” A healthy attitude, and I’m proud she gave it a shot. I never would have been so brave when I was her age.

I’m ready for school to start, even if it means that things will get much busier.

Sanserif I was sad when S decided to stop swimming, he’d done it since age 6 competitively and was good at it. But our HS has no pool and his junior year practices moved to evenings a long bus ride away. He just didn’t enjoy it anymore, I guess.

He did more music, which is what he’s about to go study in college. So it was OK. Sure it will be for your D too.

I’m sad because I know she was torn about soccer - she has played since she was 5. When it was a community league, she was an okay player and actually showed some pretty good defensive and goalie skills. But she never played on a travel team, and the intensity and expectations of the high school team - even junior varsity - is at a level far beyond what she had ever experienced. I give her a lot of credit for sticking it out last year. But I think she feels like a failure because she’s giving it up. She knows when she goes to school, a lot of kids are going to be saying “Why aren’t you playing soccer???”

The hard thing is, she has a lot of interests but there isn’t one that stands out as an obvous strength. She loves theatre, but doesn’t ever get more than a small part. She loves singing, and has an okay voice, but her range isn’t that great. Academically, she has to work hard for every grade - and math and science are a nightmare. I wish she could excel at even one thing - it would do so much for her confidence.

She has time :)

D hasn’t taken the PSAT, ACT or anything else yet, but boom, in today’s mail, the first college brochure came with her name on it. It’s actually a college her brother strongly considered but decided against in the end. Here we go?

School here starts after Labor Day. D is about to have the worst 5 days of her summer as we launch D12. We have a ~800 mile drive each way plus the actual orientation/move in day.

I hope the launch goes smoothly, jmnva06! Is D15 going along for the ride?

Ohiobassmom, D got a random mailing from the University of Scranton midway through 9th grade. No idea how they got her name - as you said, no PSAT yet - but that’s all she’s recieved so far. I guess once she takes the practice PSAT in 10th, it’ll start up.

After conferring with some friends, it seems all the little brothers and sisters (in HS) of accepted students got that mailing from this college. It’s a very popular college with kids from our HS so it makes sense for them to plant the seed early, I guess.
