Welcome @ClubAcres. My older daughter strongly considered Sarah Lawrence. There were a lot of things she loved, loved, loved about it. I will tell you though that she was turned off on her accepted students overnight when her host decided to bake pot brownies. HOWEVER, that can and does happen everywhere. I think it has a strong hipster vibe and that probably intimidated her. But it is a very cool school with a unique academic structure.

Re: keeping college talk to a minimum- My D’s GC also recommends setting a once a week appt to sit down and go over the to do list, etc. That worked well with my older daughter. In the thick of things we did it twice a week. But it meant it wasn’t a constant source of tension in the house but we all knew we had to be accountable at least once a week.

D’s list is shaping up. She knows she wants someplace relatively small where kids are serious about academics but also chill and where she can be involved in a lot of things and balance both the jock and hippie sides of herself and that has strong science programs. :)>- Fortunately that describes a lot of LACs. I just want to make sure there is at least one solid EA/rolling school on there. It is very nice to have something in the bag in the fall to make that wait until April 1 easier. Not sure if there will be an ED school or not but definitely want an EA option. We have a couple weekends of visits planned but I would be surprised if any of them resulted in schools coming off her list. So far she has liked every school she has visited!

Are we doing a list of where kids are looking? Mine is looking mostly in the Northeast with some spillover into Ohio - music therapy.

There isn’t a big senior class trip, but the auditioned music group is planning to go to an adjudication at Disneyworld, so the fundraising has already begun!

Irishmom…Yes, it’s a list of our kids, where we’re located, where they’re looking, and what they’re interested in studying. Just cut and paste the list from the most recent post and add your info into the appropriate alphabetical spot.

I’m back from dropping D off at Creative Writing camp at Alfred University. I was interested to see Alfred since the tuition is so (comparatively) cheap: $28,000 a year for the Liberal Arts School. (Less for Engineering and Arts and Design). The Main Street is very cute and the campus is fine but there seems to be a LOT of “deferred maintenance”. We’ll see how she likes it at the end of the week.

On the way we did “self-guided” tours of Franklin & Marshall and Bucknell. D really liked everything about F&M. But at Bucknell, she said she wasn’t “feeling the vibe”. I’m not sure why, I thought the campus was almost jaw dropping and the town was lovely. The main street was quintessential Norman Rockwell Americana. The campus looks like it had been transplanted there from the Virginia countryside. But it was a reach anyway, so happy to drop it off the list. F&M is a great school and we will make it a point to return in the fall for a proper visit.

Thank you for the info, @LeftofPisa Your D’s host certainly didn’t exercise very good judgement in doing that in front of a prospective student. Maybe she was showing off… who knows? I do know that drugs and alcohol are almost everywhere and I understand. I guess my concern is that my (quite unititiated) D not go somewhere very small that also has a dominant drug culture. We shall see. Thanks again!
