Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@carolinamom2boys - I was just reading your posts about the generous gift, So weird today my D16 received a graduation card and some cash in the mail from people I don’t even know.! Apparently it is from the parents of the sophomore second chair oboe player.

I vaguely recalled at the end of marching band season this year the President of the band booster club pulled me aside to compliment me for D16’s behavior toward said oboe player. Booster President explained that she thought D16 was a little annoying as a freshman but has been so pleased with the way she has matured over the last 4 years and that D16 had taken this somewhat ostracized oboe player her under wing and made certain that she had been included and that D16 was an outstanding and unrecognized leader.

Apparently oboe player’s parents must have felt the same way. It was a really unexpected.compliment. Sometimes our kids do things we have not clue about.

Just a few days ago I was kvetching to my husband about “where did I do wrong in raising my kids” because no one thought to help me do household chores lately but laid on the the couch and watched TV while I foldered laundry, made dinner and cleaned up the dishes.

Great story @labegg

Re. buying a suit/blazer: I agree about Men’s Wearhouse. We had to buy two suits for my oldest son’s wedding. My 18 year old is 5’9" and about 122 lbs. We were able to find a gorgous suit for him. We actually went under the “buy one get one free” deal. His suit was originally a $1000 suit, but it was on sale for $450. Further, I earned a $325 pre-paid Visa for being a participate in a marketing research survey. So the sum total for both my son’s suit and my dh’s suit was $125. Having said that, my son’s pants had to be hemmed (did it at Men’s Wearhouse), and that was $12. My dh’s pants needed to be hemmed (at a local seamstress for $8), so I guess we can add another $20 to the total.

I was thrilled for my son to have his first real suit. He wore it to the prom last weekend, and it looked very nice.

@labegg Very impressed! Kudos to her.

@labegg What a wonderful story and tribute to your D16’s character. Even if she does not help with laundry.

Silly question…

For the graduation caps, it looks like all the students get one tassel. However, my S16 has a mystery extra tassel in his bag, and of course he didn’t ask what it was for. It’s a different color (purple), and he did earn several SSL hours in high school (there was a certificate in his cap and gown bag for it). So, we think it’s a second tassel for service to the community.

Does he add the 2nd tassel to his cap, and move them both over when he ‘graduates’ at the end of the ceremony? Or, does he just keep the 2nd tassel at home or add it later? He could have asked today while they were at rehearsal, but since he’s not going back to school before graduation I figured I’d check here to see if others know :).

@lifegarding I know my sister is planning to wear 2 tassels-her school one and her one from being in NTHS. Could he ask his friends to see if any of them have this 2nd tassel and if they are going to wear it? I would atleast bring it to graduation ready to use unless someone tells him otherwise.

thanks @readingclaygirl, I like the idea to bring it just in case he’s supposed to add it.

I’m not sure if his friends received one since he earned many more hours than most of them - it might be for students who earned more than 200 hours, for instance. I saw other kids receiving cords for Spanish and French Honor Society, but the 2nd tassel was new to me.

@labegg: What a good egg you’ve raised. Wonderful words about your daughter, thanks for sharing.

Did your kids have a bunch of pins? S had 5 or 6 for various things (NHS, 5.0, tennis, etc.) but didn’t want to wear them since he thought they might fall off on the football field during graduation.

I have a pin for Student Council. I don’t think they will fall off.

@palm715, please stick your nose into Parents of the 19ers anytime. Your humor would be appreciated. Sheesh. How did it become the Tower of Babel? Or something.

@mommdc, people have been talking quite seriously about beginning the Class of 2021 thread.

@labegg, a real compliment!

@palm715 We could use reinforcements . It will make you truly appreciate this thread.

I feel sorry for anyone who needs any advise there since they don’t seem to think anyone is right. People who are trying to be helpful are being shot down as being too uppity or aiming too high.

@texaspg My biggest complaint is that posters who are navigating the college search for the first time are presenting info as absolute requirements for admission, not recommendations. It’s ramping up the anxiety level.

@carolinamom2boys - I think they are in a circular firing squad. No one stands a chance in giving anyone any advice.

@texaspg The problem with giving advice is someone needs to be open to accepting it. I don’t see it happening . Feels like the last installment of The Hunger Games.

I’m just quietly watching the 19 thread. Not ready to get into all of that yet. S19’s last day of school was earlier this week. And D16 has been enjoying the quiet around the house now that all the graduation guests have gone. I’m in that happy/sad limbo. Happy/relieved that it’s over, but sad because I don’t feel like I got quality time with the guests. That’s just the way events like this go though, I guess.

I’m going to crack the whip tomorrow–D16 needs to start writing thank yous.

So today, DH took S to open his college bank account. It’s early for that but S had a check to go to the bank so DH decided to take him for his school account. This week I booked S’s Thanksgiving flights and our flights to see him for Parent’s Weekend. It seemed odd to book the Thanksgiving flight for him when he has not even graduated from high school yet. But now we have travel arrangements set for move in, Parent’s weekend and Thanksgiving. I also booked my D’s Thanksgiving flights. I’m good until September, when I’ll book their December flights. Why, oh why did I not remember how far in advance you have to plan travel for a kid who is a flight away??? Going out today to order the graduation cake. Last weekend I ordered balloons and picked up the paper products for the party. Still waiting on several RSVPs but I think we’ll be at least 60.

@PAO2008 =0 Why oh why? Argh! So soon? Thank you for the “heads-up”!
