Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Best of luck! @dbjs70

D16 returned from on-campus orientation and reported that she remembered almost nothing because so much was crammed in. So, she has to review all the material now. Her schedule is not ideal, but it’s the best she could design when weighing time slots, professor reputations, and BA reqs. She still needs clarifcation on her concentration reqs inside her major. It looks like there is no time for lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays. And she’s not impressed with the food offferings. But, she is so happy about the school. And, she got a call about winning a $500 outside scholarship today. So, a good week, in all!

Congrats @dyiu for the scholarship.
Good luck and savor the moment @dbjs70 and feel better @sseamom 's sea girl.

Congratulation on scholarship @dyiu13

It is interesting that so many of you have orientations so early. My D will have orientation at the end of August. Just a few days before the school starts. I guess it is a good thing that we don’t have to pay for airfare twice. A lot of forms were due this week. Some of them required essays.

She graduated last week. The best graduation gift she got was from her big brother. A beautiful Michael Kors clutch she wanted full of gift cards to her favorite stores. Considering that he is extremely busy at his work, I am really impressed how personal this gift was.

We have orientation in July with move in Aug 20

I think some schools have “orientation” early like June/July with advising appts and registering for classes, and then freshman orientation after move-in before classes start.

At my D’s school the last possible dates of “orientation” coincides with move-in, convenient for those who come from far away, esp international students.

Other schools just do orientation right before move-in.

Yes, D’s school had a weekend back in April, which we attended, where she could register early for classes and so on. There’s another one this month, and then the full orientation experience the whole week before school starts. Parents are part of the first two days, then the kids have various meetings, tutorials, tours, evening social things, and even a day of community service around town.

@Ballerina016 what kinds of forms require essays? Ours are all the nuts and bolts of healthcare, insurance, etc.

My son is going to be a freshman at Temple this fall too. We have orientation july 14/15. I’m not sure I’m ready for this!

My college has a 1 day summer orientation as well as orientation after move in. At the 1 day one in July, we meet our advisors, make our schedules, and get to know our student mentors.

@sseamom DD’s school has few advising options: traditional non-credit and two for credit: advising seminars and Learning communities. Last two for credit options have many various options as well. Advising application requires few essays regarding student’s background and why they are interested in one or another option.

Another set of essays was for pre-orientation program. They have limited spaces for various programs and I guess trying to match students with perfect program. Pre-orientation program runs for 3-5 days before orientation. It can be major related, travel, entrepreneurships or leadership, etc.

Just set up DS16 with first checking account, savings account and debit card. Husband is also on account so we can access the account in an emergency. The man at the bank was fascinated that he even asked about that. He told him " My wife learned to do that on College Confidential"

Word of caution. DS went to walk in clinic today for Bexsero but was given the regular, non-MenB shot MCV4. Look closely before you assume that your child will be given the right shot. I called ahead to confirm they had it in stock. Sent my son armed with the name Bexsero and the knowledge that he was to make sure it was the 2 dose MenB vaccine. They convinced him that he was being given the right thing. He was not. If my insurance does not cover it–because I am guessing he already had the recommended booster at 16–I will NOT be happy. I will be on the phone again tomorrow looking for Bexsero.

S is leaving for Boston tomorrow with the church youth group, and this evening he got his finger slammed in a car door. I took him to urgent care, and he had split the bone at the end (hmmm, what’s the singular form of phelanges?). He’s got a splint, but maintenance is minimal.

@mstomper Oh no! And its phalanx according to Google

Yikes! Crush injuries are horrible. Glad to hear it’s on the mend. @mstomper

Oh no, @mstomper. So painful. Hugs to him.

@EastGrad: I saw a small bit of a film today and thought of you. Now, the truth is I can’t remember the title or what the film was about, just that it was full of mood and female-centered, the protagonist contemplative and, in a voice-over tale told through the filter of time, wise and touched with a bit of yearning.

Why that should make me think of you I can’t say exactly. Maybe because we’ve touched lightly on my daughter’s readings?

I started watching Anderson Cooper’s “Nothing Left Unsaid: Gloria Vanderbilt & Anderson Cooper,” and was moved to absolute silence. Life is so full; so full.

@Waiting2exhale, what a lovely message. You’re right: that is exactly my sort of film. Isn’t it amazing how many of us know each other so well, and yet
we wouldn’t recognize each other if we sat in at adjacent restaurant tables? I have wanted to watch the Anderson movie since it aired at Sundance last January. I will add it to my list. :x

@Waiting2exhale is that movie streaming somewhere?
