Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Anybody else having a hard time adjusting to a feeling that it is “summer”? I think I have just been through too many new experiences lately (college visits, THE decision, graduation, all those celebrations, college orientation, no summer sport starting up, etc) that I am totally out of routine and need to get into some things that will make it feel like summer. I went on a nice long bike ride today as a start.

I do feel out of sorts @cheeringsec with all of the disruptions but when it’s 98 degrees I’m quickly reminder it’s summer. :frowning:

I know what you mean but I’ve been feeling like we got a jump on summer with a long stretch of 90 degree days so early.

I’m not sure a pre-starting-college-summer ever feels like a regular summer. As you mentioned, there are just so many odds and ends to take care of leading up to move-in day.

Yeah @Cheeringsection and summer hasn’t really started here yet. I just know it’s going to be different. I can’t even text one of my best friends for 6 weeks because she has a job at a summer camp without service

D and I were just talking about how we can’t even figure out which day of the week it is because our schedules are so different now! I don’t think any of it will seem typical all summer long.

She is feeling somewhat better and is off to her internship orientation today, which ends right before her long-ago scheduled grad party. H has various meats smoking in the smoker and I am in charge of the vegetarian options plus dessert (6 dozen cupcakes).

@mstomper YEOW!! your poor S! Hope it’s not too painful.

@Cheeringsection that’s a scary story! What it was something your S was allergic to? I’d be reading people the riot act. When D got all her shots for her trip to Ghana a couple of years ago, they showed her, and me, the actual bottles they were drawing the medications from-I could SEE that they were correct. I hope you get it all worked out, and I would fight any attempt they make to make you double pay.

It has been 95 degrees + in Houston for 3 days in a row.

In case anyone else wants to hear a great feel-good story today.

Hope the grad party goes well! @sseamom It’s the big day today- prom. Off to get my hair done soon and then my parents have to go to a wedding for my uncle. Which caused its own bit of drama because it turns out the other nieces and nephews were invited and we were not. Not that we could have gone anyway because of prom- but it’s just weird. It’s not even like we are the youngest.

@palm715 - thanks for the link. I remember this kid couldn’t get into MIT because they scrapped the entire waitlist in 2012. Didn’t realize MITChris kept up despite the no admission to ensure they are faring well.

My D squeezed in her orientation between graduation rehearsals this week and came back very excited, with her fall schedule printed out. Her first class on MWF is at 3 PM so she’s happy (not a morning person). She has a 9:30 class on T/Th but its in a classroom in her dorm, so I imagine even she will get up for that one.

Graduation is finally just 48 hours away. I keep forgetting that S19 is still in school until Thursday and has finals. He got a B+ on his bio final without studying at least, but oops! He didn’t really study all year but I feel like he should make a token effort for finals.

S seemed ok when we took him and his brother to the train station this morning. He’s getting of in NY on the way back Wednesday, and meeting me for student/parent orientation at Temple the following Monday morning.

Oh, my God. The tears will not stop falling.

MITChris is part of the reason I tell kids here that the folks at MIT do not want to vanquish young souls to the pits of the netherworld, but want them to succeed.

@palm715 : What an awesome thing to share this with us today.

I really like celebrating people doing what they can to help others too, @Waiting2exhale. I believe MITChris has moved on to a different school, and I’m sure he is still spreading the feel-good. A little inspiration for us all.

As far as I know he is still at MIT. At least was as of last week.

He helped us out right after my son was admitted, and really laid into a group that was abusing their relationship with the university in reaching out to my kid. I remember asking him if he was a real person.

D’s graduation party went well, though we have enough food left over for an army! Except for the mac and cheese. No matter how much I make, it’s always wiped out. D feels much better, but now she has lost her voice! She’s supposed to sing in her church choir tomorrow, but I don’t think that will be happening. We all had fun visiting with friends and family though.

A terrible snafu with D’s internship turned up today. It seems that the person responsible for some important paperwork never sent it to D or another girl, and a background check is needed that will now delay them working for up to 3 weeks! They also have no record of her application, never sent her instructions to create an online profile with the sponsoring city department, never assigned her a mentor and I don’t know what all. She has the names of people who are going to try to get it all worked out, but at this point we’re not sure what will happen. Very stressful, especially since she passed up applying for jobs since this internship is a paid one. We’ll make do, but it was a blight on an otherwise special day.

Sorry to hear about the internship issues but I’m glad the party was successful! @sseamom Prom was fun even though the music was way too loud which caused the DJ to blow a fuse and a guy got kicked out for harassing a guy with Down Syndrome

@sseamom so sorry to hear about the delay with the internship! DS is also waiting to hear back from his employer. I hope they have completed their internal tasks and he is on the schedule this week. He will have an opportunity to make some spending money with an on campus job but anything he earns over the summer will give him less need for that during the school year.

Happy Father’s Day to all!

Happy Father’s Day. How frustrating @sseamom! Hopefully it will be rectified quickly. Are there any jobs that she can still apply for?

In our state you can apply for the clearances online. It doesn’t take very long to receive them.

Also, isn’t she under 18? Does she definitely need them?
