Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Thank you so much, @Almondjoy1 and @bookmom7 !!! You guys are all so supportive here.

We have had Amazon prime since they first started the program, and it has become an essential. It is definitely handy to have for sending items to others as well. Remember, it is not just free shipping, but free two day shipping. And on occasion, I have had things show up the next day with no additional cost. Plus they have a lot of great content on their TV channel, and the Amazon music app is wonderful too.

@fretfulmother what a wonderful story! It’s exactly for kids like your son that D is called to be a teacher. A good teacher can change lives in positive ways while a bad one, well, you know.

As for Amazon Prime, I don’t see the need for D to have her own. H and I have it, and D can just email one of us with items-it’s not like she’s going to be buy a ton of stuff. Her own spending is going to be quite limited. Books will likely come from the cheapest source possible-and that isn’t always Amazon. But that’s just my take on this.

And in the good news department, D will start her internship on Wednesday and will work 25 hours a week (the most allowed). From the emails they sent out, they’re bending over backwards to fix things for the kids left out when the person dealing with them quit and left things hanging. D’s hours will run just before to just after my own hours, so she can get practice in driving with me in the car so that hopefully she can get her license before she leaves for school.

@fretfulmother:
“please stop saying that; this is who I am now” , "“How do you spell ‘totally wonderful in my life’ Mommy?”

Fret, you take my breath away sharing such tender moments. Aren’t they just beautiful, all-growing-up-right-before-your-eyes?

I am happy to know these things are happening for your son, and you.

Yay so happy to hear the internship worked out! @sseamom

Thank you, @sseamom and @Waiting2exhale !!

@sseamom - I know your D will be awesome as a teacher, and that’s good news about the internship!

@Waiting2exhale - you are so sweet! I am honored that you liked that.

I love IEP stories with happy chapter endings! Congrats!

@sseamom - great news on the internship!

I was so confused on Fret’s congrats to sseamom - I thought I’d read all the posts! I had to go back three or so pages.
Duh. Right above my last.

Congrats on things turning around for your daughter, @sseamom. I was pulling for her. Glad things worked out.

@fretfulmother: On the subject of “Ish,” but different: are you familiar with an absolutely enchanting, inspiring two-book series by Peter Reynolds by the name? There are these tiny, tiny little books with stick figures where perseverance, courage, individuality and audaciousness help a little one to mount a challenge, and then, in book two, to pay it forward.

I have given these books to adults starting their lives over (think moms re-entering the work force), and to people who have just plain old been the cat’s meow for my kids (and we are so allergic, but that’s not the point).

Get them, Fret. You will love them!

@dyiu13 thank you!! :slight_smile:

@Waiting2exhale - I will order them! - ETA - I ordered something called “The Dot” and will keep you posted!

ahhh! I love The Dot & Ish (former Librarian here) & Peter Reynolds illustrates Judy Moody books too- some of the best for kiddos!

@fretfulmother I wish there was a love button instead of just the like button. Sounds like this is his year and with many more great ones to come!

Great @fretfulmother.

Heyyyy, you’re pretty quick on that submit button.

Hi, @bookmom7: How are things going? I’m thinking 'bout ya.

Books for D16 to read This summer:

Getting to Yes
Getting Past No (the sequel)

I figure negotiation will be a skill she needs in…everything.

@livinginLA - thank you! Particularly for the good vibes for next year. Being the fretful person I am, my thought upon experiencing a wonderful year is, “oh no; how could next year ever be as good”

@fretfulmother - it was so nice of you to share that wonderful story about your youngest. Many of our '16 kids have siblings that are affected by them leaving. I’m sure it will take some extra adjusting at your house. What a wonderful teacher your son had this year! I hope you find similar success in the fall. I love how his sweet nature comes through in his words.

@sseamom, yay I’m happy things worked out with D’s internship and that you can carpool together!

You beat me to the punch @sseamom . I was just going to say how a teacher can be such an influence on a child’s ( and family’s life) good , as well as bad. They have such a huge responsibility in the growth of a child, not just educational, but psychosocial as well. I can remember DS19’s kindergarten teacher who was a year away from retirement. She definitely preferred girls over boys. Her mission that year was to relentlessly tell me at every opportunity how my son was too involved in " imaginary play" because he liked Star Wars . He was 5 , but I digress. I can remember sitting in his IEP, when she spent the entire session reaming as a parent in front of the Speech Therapist, who quickly pointed out that was actually a strength from an SLP standpoint . In walked my DS16’s teacher for his IEP immediately after. She was amazing . What a stark contrast ! I love that so many of our students are majoring in education . It’s definitely a difficult , and often unrewarding profession. I also love that more males are going into the profession. My son’s favorite teacher , and best educational role model , was his APUSH teacher. He was also his academic team coach . He pinned his Eagle rank on him. Now he’s an active member in DS19’s life . So happy for your son @fretfulmother

Congrats to sseakid @sseamom. I’m so glad it worked out. What a great opportunity.

Thanks for the appreciation of education majors! @carolinamom2boys

@fretfulmother What a great success story about your youngest. I hope next year is as wonderful as this year for him.

Regarding Amazon Prime, I have had it since they first offered it and it does really alter how you shop but in a good way. It was very helpful when D was away at school. She used my prime account, I was not giving it up for her to get a student one - plus I use it more than she did. But if your DC is more than a couple of hours away, and especially if they are a flight away, I’d highly recommend it.
