Another endorsement for Amazon Prime. It’s good for all that is listed above and then some. When college child talks about how stressed they are due to midterms/extracurriculars/finals/problem sets/end-of-term project and he is out of shampoo, you can send it to him in two days. The hope is that in that day between, he can swish around enough water in the bottom of the bottle to get one last wash. Or steal a little from a roommate. Not that this has every happened in my child’s life, of course. ;))
I’m still on the fence about Prime, though the girl is pretty sure she wants to get it.
I used to order dry goods and staples from Amazon on subscription, in volume and at a discount over a one-off purchase. Did that for about 4 years and then they started moving all of the deals over to Prime memberships and I finally discontinued the service two years ago.
My D’17 may be experiencing a huge onset of the blues at her sister leaving, and one brother gone. This afternoon she said to me that she’s so glad she has her little brother ('20), because she’d be so lonely without him.
I really was surprised to hear this and did not know how to process it, figuring he’d just done some quirky little brother thing she found endearing, and thus her thoughts were centered on him. While that is wholly possible, I recall looking at her face and listening to the quiet, self-comforting, grateful-to-the-powers-that-be way she said it, almost as if in revelation, and wondering what had come over her,
I think we’re going to need some help turning this corner.
@Waiting2exhale I’ve noticed that DS19 fluctuates between distancing himself and spending increased time with DS16. I think the reality is setting in for him. They do have some of the same friends so that should help in the transition. Many of them will be seniors next year , so I think that will help.
Emotions are so high during the summer right before they leave. I think there is a lot of distancing and embracing. It’s like those days of having a two-year-old who simultaneously wants you to hold him and to leave him alone. Hugs to all as we work through these emotions!
(Just thinking about how we haven’t heard from @AsleepAtTheWheel for a very long time. Hope you’re out there and well, AATW!)
What a wonderful story @fretfulmother !
So glad the internship worked out @sseamom !
Dorm mountain has begun with rain gear being the most recent purchase. The North Face and Backcountry are having a sale. For those headed off to places with rain, snow, etc it may be time to get that outerwear.
Thank you so much @psychmomma @PAO2008 @carolinamom2boys @Cheeringsection !!! This is such an awesome group here!!!
I posted this on the "Good Buy " thread , and I thought that I also posted here, but I guess I didn’t. I ordered DS16’s computer online earlier this week. After finding out from the Dean of CS what features he would need, he ordered a Dell ( don’t ask me specifics because sadly computer speak is not my language) for a very reasonable price and also received a 32 inch Samsung TV for free. He’s been in touch with his suite mates , and he’s popular right now .
@fretfulmother Thank you for sharing your story!
We have finally graduated! The ceremony was last night. I spent the last five days nervously checking the weather as heavy thunderstorms were predicted and only 2 of us would have been allowed into an indoor ceremony. I spent the whole day yesterday refreshing weather.com every few minutes! The clouds were dark and threatening, but thanks to so many good weather wishes, thoughts and prayers, the rain held off and the sun was out by the end of the ceremony!
It was a nice surprise to have them award the diplomas in reverse alphabetical order. We are at the end of the alphabet and have always been at the back end so this was really exciting for us! They finally put my son’s middle initial in too! They kept dropping it from everything else. Unfortunately, the program left out the last page of “Senior Destinations” so everybody at the end of the alphabet was left out. Oh well.
So glad it’s over. Now we need to slow time down.
Congrats @RyanG1207 .
Family dynamics have been weird here. S21 has been away on the mainland with grandparents for the last 3 weeks with another week to go. D16 is actually working at my company, but we don’t interact much except for having lunch together. It is fun to hear about how quickly she is learning her duties and how well she works with others. Finally, my relationship-adverse D found a beau so lots of free time is spent with him. Maybe all these changes will help ease the transition with she is actually gone… but I doubt it.
I’ve loved the burst of good news on this thread. We’ve been slowing down lately so I was excited to see all the new posts.
@readingclaygirl congrats on your graduation!
@fretfulmother I loved your younger son’s success story, and the wonderful reminder we are all running out own races with our own finish line. He sounds like a lot of fun!
@sseamom so excited the internship will happen! It sounds perfect for your D.
@RyanG1207 graduation success! I’m glad Mother Nature was on your side.
Oh, finally, I love my Amazon Prime which ties into, no, it don’t have any books suggestions for D, but we are watching Mr. Selfridge together on Amazon and enjoying the heck out of it. This summer is definitely sparse on the academic pursuits, which after four intense years and with at least four more years to come, is fine by me.
Congrats on a successful graduation @RyanG1207 I think your kid was the last one to get their diploma
My son graduated last night too. He walked across the stage about 8pm. It was indoor so no worry about the weather until they threw us out.
BTW I love Amazon Prime.
Congrats @Dragonflygarden
I love Amazon Prime! I’m also liking renting text books from Amazon. I was able to rent ds18 DE text book for his summer class for only $13.xx (vs. buying it used for $60!) and no shipping charge either direction. I have an Amazon credit card tied to the amazon account so we earn credit for future purchases. DD will just use our account while she’s in school.
My D also rented one of her books from Amazon. She renewed it for second semester. When she came home in May she just printed out a return label and put it back in the box it came in and sent it back.
Her professor had sent an email to them with the book they were required to have and it was waiting for her at college when she moved in.
I don’t have Amazon prime, but if I want something I have D order it for me.
Congrats to your son @Dragonflygarden
Hello everyone! It feels I have been gone from here for so long. I have been on the facebook group, so I have sent congratulations to many of the graduates but have missed many more. CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Daughter just got back from SOAR, she is registered and has a nice class schedule. First class at 9:00 a.m., last at 2:30 MWF. She met her roommate finally and they are excited to be roomies. She finds out which dorm she has been assigned on July 1. We have almost finished Dorm Mountain!!
I love Amazon Prime and daughter will use mine.
Welcome back @Sophmore1 .
Congrats to @RyanG1207 and @Dragonflygarden on finally making that last high school hurdle!
I also have and love Amazon Prime.
