Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

What sad news, @readingclaygirl ! It’s true-every spring it seems that this happens all around the country. THE top football star in my high school was also one of the top students academically, and nearly died in a car crash just before graduation. He survived with only a broken leg, but his car was totaled and it was a a miracle he was not more badly hurt. We all knew he took risks with drinking and pot, and were not surprised by what happened-the adults had no idea.

Trust your instincts and don’t go along with the crowd. Too many kids think they’re invincible.

We’re near a major metropolitan area so every year the stories start coming: kids newly graduated, or nearly so, killed in traffic accidents. A few years ago six kids from a nearby high school’s band were in the same vehicle when it crashed (not sure whether it was alcohol related, but it was too-many-kids-in-the-car-late-at-night related). Four were killed, including one who was ejected. S has been very careful to tell me “it’s okay Mom, he drives like an old granny” whenever he rides with his friends who have cars (and his best friend really does, I’ve ridden with him!). The band kids all know each other, even from different schools-- I think it made a big impression.

Heartbreaking @readingclaygirl. A parent’s worst nightmare.

I think it was one of those too many teens in a car situations. There were 2 16 year olds and 2 17 year olds. The other 3 are okay. It’s so scary and so sad. This happened hours before that high school’s graduation, the family had told the school to go forward with it.

The highest cause of teenage deaths in our county is car accidents. Teen drivers are only allowed to take one other teen in their car. Hearing this story is horrifying.

@carlson2 In NY if you have a junior license (which the driver must have being 16) you can only have one non related passenger in the car.

Sorry about the loss of life @readingclaygirl - it is so hard.
I lost my brother at a young age in a car accident & I often think of what role he would have played in my DS’s life (he has no uncles)
Another one of those reminders to make the most out of life because you just never know.

I’m sorry for the loss of your brother @bookmom7

Thank you @readingclaygirl - hope you are feeling better- when is your grad party?

It’s tomorrow afternoon. @bookmom7 I’m starting to feel a little better

Sorry to hear @readingclaygirl . In our area, 2 19 year old college freshmen were ejected from their car and killed on a major highway just last week. Please wear your seatbelts!

Congrats @readingclaygirl !!

Thanks for sharing @fretfulmother. That is a wonderful story!!

We did a walk through at BBB to get ideas of dorm needs that had not hit us yet. We are debating the best way to move clothes: suitcase that comes back home with us, plastic bin that stays and can then be used for other things, duffle that stores easily so can stay, etc. Things on hangers will be moved on hangers but how do you plan to move the rest? We are driving not flying.

Also DS mentioned a classmate got a “steamer bag” as a gift. I think a steamer makes more sense than an iron but anyone have any experience with a steamer bag?

What is a steamer bag? We also were questioning about an ironing board and iron. DS16 has already located a dry cleaner near campus which I think is the best bet for his nicer clothing that he’ll wear for interviews and William Aiken events . We have also started shopping. Anyone have thoughts in a dirt devil or something similar?( Not that it will probably ever be used  ) I’m open to any other suggestions.

When thinking about an iron, check to see where it can be used. At my college you can only use it in the kitchen

Hmm, I’ve never heard of a “steamer bag” in a clothing context (maybe for roasting a chicken!) I think D16 has seen me iron maybe 10 times in 18 years and I don’t think she’s ever done it, so probably no iron for her! Her dresses are pretty low maintenance and she’s probably not going to be interviewing for anything in the immediate future. I’m more concerned about getting her hiking gear since she’ll have some classes at her school’s Rocky Mountain campus!

Do most people’s kids have their roommate assignments? D16’s roommate matching app closes in less than two weeks and she hasn’t paid much attention to it so far. She’s living in a learning community of about 45-50 students and she’ll have two classes with them the first semester, so I guess she figures it doesn’t matter that much who her actual roommate is. She will not be happy, though, if her roommate is planning to vote a certain way in the 2016 election, or likes country music, going to bed at 10 or extreme neatness.

I don’t think so @eh1234 Most of my friends won’t get them until late July or early August

@eh1234 DS16 will be living in a 6 person suite with 2 people to a room, sharing 2 bathrooms and a small living area. He will be participating in a entrepreneurship living learning community . All of his suite mates have been accounted for , and he has touched base with all through FB and texting. Sounds like a good group of boys with similar interests . I do tease DS16 though because his nontradtional musical tastes is direct conflict with his roommate whose taste involves quite a bit of rap music. He then tells me “that’s what earphones are for.” Hopefully everything will work out for your daughter.

Wow @readingclaygirl . When do you begin school? DS16 moves in Aug 21.

I start August 25th. I think the assignments for my college come out the last week of July but I chose a roommate so I already know. My friends move in’s range from August 15th until September 25th.
