Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Congrats @readingclaygirl

Dumb bedding question – does my D need both a mattress cover and a memory foam pillow topper?

There are some mattress covers you can get to keep bed bugs out. I plan on getting one.

@carlson2 I got that bug and allergies protector mattress cover that @collegemom2boys mentioned from Target. I also plan to get a mattress topper when we get to Boston.

Thanks! We were completely blown away with people’s generosity.

Sounds like I will need both. Thanks!

Foam topper, covered by a mattress cover. I get ours from Target. Even a $20 topper helps make the beds comfortable. All three of my kids used those. The oversized comforter is a great suggestion, too. My D always had a full or queen on her XL twin dorm bed.

@psychmomma - what size mattress cover then? The Target twin xl I looked at were only 12" deep. With a topper- will it still fit & zip?

@bookmom7 it should unless you get more than a 4 inch topper.

@Ballerina016 - I think there is a dry cleaner in the basement of the student center…? Which dorm did DD pick?

@fretfulmother she doesn’t know yet. Her first choice is BC.

’ I think there is a dry cleaner in the basement of the student center…?"

Imagine that. When I ask, the kid here says ā€œI think so.ā€

You think so?

ā€œUh…Yes!Yes, there is.ā€

@bookmom7 - I agree with @carolinamom2boys - you shouldn’t have a problem with a moderately sized topper.

thanks- after reading more- I hadn’t realized just how thin the average college mattress is- yikes! :open_mouth:

I cannot provide any additional info on what a steamer bag is. I was surprised to get that much info from my DS.

I am glad the party went well @readingclaygirl.

Good idea about checking if irons are allowed. I guess that could cause problems.

For those that are driving it was suggested to me today that garbage bags work just fine for moving. Not sure I like that idea. Maybe to move out and keep things separate until they can be washed.

If using plastic trash bags for moving, consider heavy contractor-grade bags. Also, bags work well for irregular-shaped car interiors. They fit into nooks and crannies.

D16 is using a ā€œfullā€ bedspread (doesn’t like fluffy comforters), an XLong quilted mattress cover, and an XLong down mattress topper on top of that. The XLong fitted sheet will go over the cover and topper. I need to wash some of this before the move, just to break it in.

I’m going to guess that a steamer bag is the kind of duffle that sailors use, with the long strap along the length of the bag, which opens at the top. Like Jack had in Titanic, or AFAIK, they still use in the Navy-S had one 10 years ago.

For mattress toppers, Big Lots is good-that’s where I got the one D has at home, Ross is also less expensive, bot both are discount stores so they may not always have them. The 4" one on my bed is from Overstock-at the time shipping was only $2.99. Now it looks like it’s free over $45. TJ’s and Marshalls might also be good. Had not considered a mattress cover, but D saw one in Target the other day that prevents both allergies and bedbugs, and since she has allergies and is scared of bugs, it seems like a good idea.

Oh, my goodness, @sseamom. You cannot imagine the ridiculous idea I had formulated for what this bag might be.

Your idea sounds great.

If anyone is shopping at Target & has the Cartwheel app- you can get 20% off bedding and bath until July 2.
