Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

So stressed about money stuff. Trying to do federal loan counseling and it’s just crazy. Why oh why does the government expect 18 year olds to be able to deal with this stuff?

This site has a variety of good links but, had to share this one with you all. (might need to get a kleenex)

@readingclaygirl, don’t stress, take a deep breath, it will be ok.

I believe you can accept the loan and do your MPN and loan entrance counseling and then if you find that you don’t need the loan (when you get your bill), you can let the school know. You also don’t need to take the full amount.

Or you can wait and apply for the loan later.

Thanks I know. @mommdc I’m just taking it one step at a time. I know it will work out.

My daughter and I just finished her BBB registry. We looked at Target/HomeGoods but didn’t find as many Twin/XL Twin choices. BBB is more expensive but the selection for everything is awesome.

We set D16 up with a checking account (DH is on it too) at Chase today and as soon as she turns 18, she’'ll add a Slate credit card to it. She is a bit fearful of using credit, but the plan is to create a FICA score for her. Charge and pay off monthly. She can use it for medicine and other items we usually provide, and then we will pay off her card monthly. It’s also just handy. I’ll be working with her on a budget this summer, and I’m not worried about any crazy credit card debt – she’s extremely prudent.

Next step is to help her sign up for a student Amazon Prime.

Chugging along. After this weekend…7 more weekends at home. The countdown is real.

She and I also cleaned the garage today. Whoa. So many kiddie toys. Tossing a lot. Donating a few. Childhood is over. (Keeping the sidewalk chalk…ageless.)

Who are these 18 year olds who stay home on Saturdays to clean garages?! Mine was here long enough to empty the dishwasher and take a shower today.

D16 currently has bank accounts at 3 different banks which is probably not idea. (She has a savings account through our credit union that we’re turning over to her, her PNC account she opened last year when she got a job, and her account at the bank with a branch on her campus - at orientation, she got a student ID that doubles as a debit card.) I think we’ll consider a credit card at the end of this first academic year.

When my son and my husband went to
open his bank account last month , he received a debit card. The person that helped them actually recommended waiting until 21 to get a credit card.

I’m too nervous to count down the weekends left but it is coming fast. There’s a lot of shopping left to do. I don’t have a credit or debit card yet or a checking account. I just have a savings account that we have to fix so my dad’s name isn’t on it so I can actually take money out myself.

@readingclaygirl My husband’s name
is on my son’s account so that my son or my husband can withdrawal money in case of emergencies.

@carolinamom2boys That’s a good thing but whatever way our accounts are set up mean I can’t go into the bank and withdraw money myself without my father right there. Which will be a problem come college if I have to withdraw money

@readingclaygirl we intend to set up a joint account so we can deposit easily and D16 can withdrawal easily.

Today, DH and I took D16 to pick out a winter coat. That’s another check mark on our shopping list!

My DD signed up for a cooking dorm. Now I don’t have to cook at home since she is trying different recipes all the time.

Whenever I see people posting about buying winter coats, I remember not everyone lives in a place where it is needed.

@readingclaygirl - we had to do the same thing. We had custodial savings accounts set up when the kids were young - so we needed to sign them over to the kids when they were 18.

question, this might have already been asked, but I couldn’t find.

Can you set up to send 2016 and all other AP scores now or do you have to wait until after July 5th?

I see the college boards says that if you pay to send your scores from June 17th to July 3rd, they will be sent rush, but I am trying to figure out if that batch will include this year’s scores as well or will you have to pay to send another batch after July 5th?

Edit: I have found that you need to wait till July 4th - July 14th to get this year’s AP results to your college on rush delivery.

When you take the AP exams, can you list your college so that your scores are sent automatically? My son seemed to think that he listed his college, but perhaps he is confused.

I do believe that you can @Justathought1 , but he may want to make sure that his earlier tests were also sent before he committed to his college .

@Justathought1 that’s what my kids do. You get one free score send with AP’s and they will send all AP’s taken up until that time.

I sent his earlier scores a few weeks ago and the school verified receiving them. Thanks!
