Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

“There was a movie made of it starring Parker Stevenson.”

Wait. A. Minute. There is a film?! With Parker Stevenson?! My little girl heart loved that guy.

Thanks, @OspreyCV22, that was both news and a reason for my mind to float back. I can just see his hair right now…

@HappyFace2018, I’ll be on the lookout for a happy post from you tomorrow!

It’s really interesting to see how different colleges give credit for AP scores. My D did well enough to get credit for a number of classes, but got a 4 on one test that her school only gives credit for 5’s. (While other schools we looked at would’ve given credit for a 4, and some local schools even give credit for a 3.) Then sometimes they don’t even count towards the requirements you’d want them to count for, or there’s a limited amount they will accept. Still, we’re very pleased. This will give her some breathing room to not feel like she has to really load up her schedule every semester.

I do feel like I’m a little wiser as we navigate all this again with my younger child.

Congrats on people who received AP scores already! I don’t get mine until Friday. As for allowance my mom just told us we will be getting more than what we currently get in college, because there will be a need for it. This allowance won’t be huge but big enough to cover toiletries, extra food if needed, and an occasional treat or time out with friends. They don’t want us working first semester so we can get used to college. They will also pay for my sister’s gas/car insurance as they have been(she’s communting).

Five stars out of a possible ten! It’s not available on DVD or the streaming services so it’s been thoroughly forgotten. IIRC it was a bit slow. I read the book the summer between eighth and ninth grade and loved it.

There seems to be a 2004 remake produced by Showtime. Off to ferret the details.

The 2004 remake is available on You Tube. I can post a link but I think there will be asterisks where You Tube should be.

Off to the show…

@LexieAnn GW requires 6-7’s to get any credit in any particular area of study so earning credits is pretty tough. In order for her to graduate from GW with “Latin Honors” (this is what University Honors Program students earn) she must maintain a GPA of 3.4 or better. I think she mentally moved on from waiting for the IB results when she learned she’d been accepted to Elliott and the honors program.

I think our entire high school went to see the original movie! It was big news because it had been filmed on location and so many of the students had read the book. And like, you @Waiting2exhale I had a bit of a crush on Parker Stevenson.

No AP’s at D’s HS but congrats to all of you whose kid’s did so well! And patience for those of you still waiting.

Alright, some of you talking about not working/not letting your child work first semester has me a little nervous. D qualified for work study, and I thought a guaranteed job would be good for her. She did decide not to join any extracurricular groups right off the bat to have time to get acclimated. Hopefully working a few hours a week will allow her to meet new people and not be too much on top of classes/schoolwork.

DS16 will not be working his first semester . He has qualified for close to a full ride with some fairly stringent requirements for participation in his Honors program and his Entrepreneurial Living Learning Community. It is more financially responsible for our family for him to focus on his academics and transition to college the first semester with us offsetting some spending money. There are some tutoring opportunities that he may look at second semester.

Filed under, “it’s the little things,” D found out she has a window box outside her dorm room. She has known for a while that she will be living in one of the smaller dorms, an old brownstone, that houses the 70 kids in the Green Living LLC. She is in a triple and communicating regularly with her two roommates. The one who lives closest to the school just got back from her summer orientation, had a chance to check out the room, and reported back about the window box. They are already planning which herbs to grow to make their own tea. D is all giggly with excitement, and it warms the cockles of her old ma’s heart.

D had no APs senior year, just dual credit. Overall, it looks like she is going to get credit for the three APs she has, plus five out of the six community college classes she took. This will easily allow her to cut a semester off her undergraduate degree. Woohoo!

Finally, she has an all-freshman-required-reading book, “Strength in What Remains.” She is half-way through reading it “for fun,” then plans to read it again with note taking. Since it’s from the public library, it sounds like we are going need to renew it a couple times.

@LexieAnn I’m not sure how work study works (we didn’t qualify for it). Do you know how many hours she will be working and will it affect her ability to have a little downtime between classes.

S was given work study but won’t be working first semester. Same as our older kids. We wanted them to get acclimated to college life and the workload of college classes before adding an additional 10 hour commitment each week. If he works but doesn’t maintain the gpa needed to keep a scholarship, it would be a net loss. Every family is different and every kid (and major) is different. Plenty of kids work right away, so if that makes sense for your family, you shouldn’t be too concerned about it.

@LexieAnn our D’s scholarship is leadership-based and she is required to join 2 clubs/groups a semester (it can be the same groups both semesters) to keep the scholarship, along with maintaining a certain GPA. She also won’t even be 17 when school starts. We want her to concentrate on her school obligations before working. She also didn’t qualify for work-study, which jobs are are usually low-key and of course, on campus.

D’s sister’s dad offered her an allowance IF she sent him a budget breakdown, but she didn’t want to be restricted that way, so chose to work off-campus her first semester. It was really rough on her, not just because of the people at the job-townies who didn’t appreciate students much (it was off-campus), but because the hours she put in took away from her studies.

D has many years of experience with tutoring, so she may look into that either at the student tutoring center or privately, but down the line a bit.

On working and allowance, we thought about $50.00 a month might be doable for our first kid, and he could become really resourceful if he found he needed more.

They’ve never received allowance, and we thought it almost extravagant to start now, but didn’t want first kid, and don’t want D’16, to feel completely strapped.

D’16 will probably look for some extra income second semester, but I’ll stick to the same college “allowance” for her and maybe sneak in a little more when her dad is not looking, basically because she is a girl and I think the needs can be greater. She has covered all of her student expenses and contribution, for which we are grateful.

@sseamom: “…our D’s scholarship is leadership-based and she is required to join 2 clubs/groups a semester (it can be the same groups both semesters) to keep the scholarship…”

I find that to be really different and I really like it. It seems a way to nudge the young scholar along who has expressed, and so closely identified, leadership as a part of their make-up and focus before college.

@sseamom I like that too. Any idea on what clubs she will join? Or do any of your kids have an idea what clubs they want to join? I’m planning on joining Student Government and the newspaper

Just trying to catch up here. Hope everyone had a good 4th of July. We’ve hit a snag with getting S registered for classes. He was supposed to hear from his 4 year adviser in mid-June. That did not happen and I finally got him to email the school a week ago (end of June). The dean’s office emailed right back and said he should have heard weeks ago and to check his spam (nothing there). He then heard from the adviser who said she has a lot of information to go over with him and needs to speak with him. Well, it still has not happened. They’ve emailed back and forth about speaking but nothing more. He emailed back last Thursday and explained he works at a day camp without access to a phone until 4:30 our time. He tried to call her on Friday when he got home but of course, it was the beginning of a holiday weekend. He needs to register on July 13 but at this point has not had any substantive communications with his adviser and seems to have no idea what classes to take. DH and he don’t seem too concerned but of course, I am the worrier. AP scores won’t be out until July 9th here and that could impact what he takes.

I don’t understand why the adviser did not try to get in touch with S when she did not hear from him. I really hope this is a technology glitch and not an indication of the type of adviser S has. He needs somebody more organized than him. My D had an excellent 4 year adviser so I hope this gets sorted out. S just is not a great communicator but he left her a good voicemail message on Friday.

Hope it all works out. @PAO2008

@OspreyCV22 : That film was “new” enough to entice one of my children to sit beside me and watch. Big thanks for that!

A film necessarily needing to be condensed, it was cast and directed well enough for one child to walk through the room, see a most fluid movement by Phineas reaching to catch Gene at the tree, and remark, “Whoa, that was some smoothe catch, right there!” (Note: Apparently, there is no ‘e’ at the end of smooth, but there will be today.)

I was getting all caught up on the looks of the boys, and finding myself distracted by glimpses of Hilary Swank in the Phineas actor (Toby Moore), and a mash of Michael Pitt, Hart Bochner and Macaulay Culkin in the Brinker actor (named, interestingly enough Jacob Pitts.

Perhaps with too much of the look of in-the-room but not part-of-the-group in his eyes, the actor who played Gene (J Barton) made me wish someone else had been cast.

Thanks for the link, Osprey.

I’m almost positive our DS will work asap. He knew that was a requirement if he picked P… I guess if he didn’t find something he wouldn’t…?
