Hmm. D16 has announced that she intends to work on campus in fall. I do not like. She thinks she can handle it. I foresee a serious discussion this weekend.
You donāt REALLY have to air out the mattress topper for that long. Iāve put them on a bed in the morning and by the time I go to bed, theyāre fine. Just donāt put the sheets/blankets on right away. You REALLY canāt compress them to the size they are when you get them unless you were to vacuum seal them. Weāre just buying on location and doing the best we can to air it out in the dorm. Big Lots and Ross have the best prices by far around here.
If youāre old like me, and 55 or +, you can get an extra 10 percent off your Ross purchases on Tuesdays.
Why yes, yes I am!
@sseamom: ā.Big Lots and Ross have the best prices by far around here.ā
We were in stores yesterday looking for items daughter had seen in catalogues, but wanted to touch and look at up close. When we got to the mattress topper, she actually seemed to take a concerted interest.
I let her know that sseamom said, 'At Big Lots and Rossā¦"
Airline vent! Tried to book our flights on SW since the price dropped the tiniest bit. Input all the info, hit purchase and got āunable to complete at this time.ā Tried again, same. DD received a copy of the itinerary via email. I received nothing. Canāt log into my SW account. Says down for maintenance. Checked the prices and theyāve already increased!
D16ās first semester class schedule is locked in (and the tuition bill has been preliminary posted, $19,000 but they still have to post the housing portion and factor in her scholarship, but essentially her scholarship pays for room and board). She got her ideal schedule (she was lucky in the schedule lottery and scored an online registration time within the first 6 hours of going live). No class until 10 am MWF and her sciences are not back to back blocks which her advisor told her to avoid if at all possible. Her day end at 4:30. 8am Theology class on T/TH might prove to be a bear but T/TH are pretty light. Theology in the AM and a Chem Lab on Tues for 3 hrs with Chem and Bio discussion sections on Thursday afternoons during that same block of time.
Biology 1001 (3cr) Lecture and Discussion
Chemistry 1001 (4cr) Lecture, Lab and Discussion
English Rhetoric and Composition 1002 (3 cr) Received AP credit for English 1001
Intro to Biomedical Science (Mandatory Intro to Major) (1cr)
Music Theory 2500 (3cr)
Theology 1001 Narrative and the Christian Imagination (3cr)
Music Wind Ensemble (1cr)
(18 total Credit Hours)
Her exam schedule is already posted and it looks like 1 test a day with a break mid week. Only one day with a double test, but it is only the 1 credit intro to her major class and Music Theory. The course book list has also been generated. I just took a quick look at the costs and quit adding up the cost because I am not ready to face that yet.
She and a friend checked out the AP Euro score (via a server prox)y today and she received a 3. Happy to see that Marquette had already received and given her credit for her AP English Comp class even though she had just requested it to be sent last week!
Overall registration has been a relatively painless process (apart from the cost) for her. Because she is doing the Direct Entry DPT program her courses are pretty much mapped out there not much opportunity to deviate from the set path. Her electives are eaten up by the Music Minor.
@labegg my DS would be so jealous of your DDās schedule! He needs to contact his advisor and see if receiving AP credit for a class he is currently registered for means he should take the next level class. That class is NOT his 8am however so it will not improve his schedule as much as he would like.
We are driving to school but have already learned the lesson about airing out the mattress topper. Donāt do it until you are in the dorm room!! It will not take long and it is quite awkward to transport once unpacked. I cannot wait to try to bring it home for the summer.
Anyone have an opinion on regular twin vs XL for the comforter? DS does not want a āsetā so I have bought XL sheets but XL comforters are harder to find. I think either will work for him and I would be surprised if the bed is ever made so less in a pile may be more overall.
@Cheeringsection We purchased all Twin XL at BBB. Her packing list recommended it. BBB has a great selection.
@Cheeringsection Iāve heard from many people a twin comforter works fine . Our bed will be on risers so we will be getting a full size to hang down on the sides to hide whatās being stored under the bed .
Lord Jesus help usā¦my daughters IB results wonāt be published until 11:30am today.
@HappyFace2018 - Right there with you.
For the mattress topper - I was not going to bother airing it out. Yeah it will smell for a couple days but Iām afraid if we take it out of the package before we get to the room, we will never get it in manageable form again. I have wondered what she will do at the end of the year. Will she be able to fold or roll it or something so it can be reasonably stored for next year? On a related note, Iām hoping she will find a place near campus to store stuff over the summer so we donāt need to bring all the bedding/dorm stuff/winter clothes home. I was able to do that when I went to college but I did go to a school that had lots of people from far away.
D got her AP scores early by using an app that hides your location. She got all 4ās so she gets to place out of a couple gen ed requirements. She also got off a waitlist for one of her courses (same course, just a better time) so it looks like her schedule is now completely set.
I am trying to figure out what to do about Thanksgiving and Christmas travel. Iām a little afraid to buy airfare before she actually starts classes in case they say something that isnāt according to the official schedule. For example, school is closed on Wednesday before Thanksgiving. On Tuesday she has a class that goes to 5:30. So do I really need to plan around that? Even the last school sponsored bus leaves at 6. Then I managed to find the final schedule. Most of her finals are earlier in the week, but one is on the very last day. I would hate to buy plane tickets based on that and then find out that there is not really a final in that class. So I think that I will hold off until classes start and just cross my fingers.
Instead of getting a job, D15 decided to be a human guinea pig. She regularly does studies for the business school that pay $20 for a half hour to hour survey/quiz/simulation. The big one she did was letting herself be inflected with a cold to test new cold medications. That one paid $750. She plans to do that one again in the fall.
She treats all this like a job and says it is the ideal student job because she can choose to participate in more when her schedule is lighter and pull back when she needs to study more. We sent her to school with a lump sum to cover personal needs and spending and she spent none of it despite going on a spring break trip.
D16 is quite jealous that her small liberal arts college will not have the same opportunities for funded studies. But her school has lots of student jobs even for those who donāt qualify for work study and those jobs are pretty understanding about a studentās studies needing to come first. Weāll leave it up to her to decide when and how much to work. She is working this summer so she will head off with enough in the bank to cover her needs for the year.
@labegg, wow that is a full schedule. Good that the times work out.
At my Dās school the housing assignments came out on July 10th last year, bill around the 20th, the school determines new tuition rates in July also. Lab fees for Bio and Chem added another $100 a semester or so.
The good thing was her books for Bio and Chem and German were good for both semesters.
@Cheeringsection, a twin comforter was fine. It had about 28" overhang because the bed is against the wall.
The only book my D is reading right now is her PCAT (pharmacy school admissions test) study book.
It will be nice when she is done with the test and has a few more weeks to relax before going back to college.
She really likes her job, especially the pay, although she is dismayed that they deduct 20% of her pay for taxes.
My daughter picked out a twin comforter @Cheeringsection. We bought XL sheets though. I figured if the comforter was a little short she could supplement with pillows, or fold the sheet down so it looked intentional with the coordinating color. (And, Iām skeptical as to how often her bed will even be made,)
@mom23travelers, our local university does studies like that. Well, not to the extent of the virus infecting one, but taste tests, smell test, etc. I participate in quite a few and recommended D16 do some the rest of the summer since she couldnāt get a job after being abroad. Thereās an alcohol one Friday afternoon where youāre required to bring a designated driver. The way this week is going, fingers crossed I get chosen for that. HA!
@HappyFace2018 @madredos My night last night consisted of calming down my full IB friends so they could actually sleep. Hope all works out for your Dās.
@HappyFace2018 - my Dās scores are up. We are a happy family. Hoping for the same at your house.
Any size comforter will work fine - Twin, XL Twin, Full, Queen. My D had full and queen because she loves to have lots of comforter to snuggle in and liked it hanging to hide things below. S had a Twin comforter and it was also fine. We have never opened the bed topper before getting in the room. It becomes big and unruly fairly quickly. I donāt remember noticing an odor.
