Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Great article, @frenchtoastlover!

S asked his friends if they are planning to do the weekly call home- and none of them are planning to do it. So we had a little staying-in-touch talk! We are more likely to get texts or a group chat from S than a phone call.

We had a fun shopping outing today and found a few of the remaining items from the school shopping list. S seemed to have fun and was a good sport as we were out most of the day.

Today was our first time in an Apple Store. It was bustling and loud with happy chatter and laughing. I’m not sure we’ve ever had such a pleasant experience buying a computer.

@Cheeringsection I know! The funny part is the Dean who was speaking is actually an alum. Her response was that there are co-Ed colleges nearby that some girls meet guys at but a Russell Sage education creates strong, independent women ready to change the world.

@readingclaygirl, many of us don’t meet our spouses is college. I was a guy in a mostly female master’s program ad didn’t go on a single date. I still got married and had kids. I’m sure you don’t pay much attention to the type of comment you heard, which is good.

@texaspg, I’m at the tail end of the baby boomers (1964) and wasn’t married until I was 31. I was lucky it was that soon. Thing is, I’m still married. I’m glad there isn’t still a stigma attached to marrying later; my parents had pretty much given up on me. I had to tell them to sit down when I told them I was getting married.

@mstomper I didn’t give one grain of salt to that comment! My parents didn’t meet until they were in their mid/late twenties.

Shopping for bedbug mattress protectors, and I’m completely overwhelmed. Should I go for a low price point ($20) or higher ($70+)? What material is most effective and most comfortable? What depth (regular or deep) is needed to cover that typical, 9"- deep, blue vinyl XL dorm mattress? Do you put the bedbug encasement over just the mattress or over the cotton mattress pad and down topper, then cover it all with the fitted sheet (which might be only regular depth – now I have to go check what she has)? Halp.

I have just caught up on 60+ pages of posts and am very glad to rejoin the conversation. I was also very itchy several pages ago during the bedbug discussion. Looking forward to answers to @dyiu13’s question above!

Loved reading your article, @frenchtoastlover, thanks for posting!

@psychmomma, DS13 calls home every week at the same time and is quite put out if we are busy. Loved the missing Visa card story, @carolinamom2boys!

D16 and D21 and I cleaned out the bathroom they share earlier this week. It took half a day, and besides the enormous cache of tiny hair clips…or what D16 called clippies…there was a great number of things borrowed from me by D16 and then lost in the depths of her bathroom drawers. D21, who is neatness embodied, was very pleased with the tidying and with the fact that everything of mine had been borrowed by her sister not her. D16, who is not neatness embodied, still did a very D16 thing, which was to line up all the matching hairclips on bits of hair ribbons. We now have 200+ themed hairclips lined up in groups of 6-20 on ribbons, including a ribbon of Hello Kitty clips and a ribbon of dragonfly clips. Not entirely sure what to do with them now…

@dyiu13, I am a worrier and I’m really not worried about bedbugs. When you get D to college and see anything amiss, then you can still buy something, right? Have you asked the college if they have had many incidents?

I think Target has some fairly inexpensive mattress encasements (my understanding is that they zip around the mattress and then bedding goes on top of that).

I don’t know if D is planning to live off campus in subsequent years, so buying expensive XL bedding is unnecessary imo.

@dyiu13 - put the encasement over the mattress- then topper and mattress pad and fitted sheet on top of the encasement. That way the barrier is between the school’s mattress and the rest of the bedding you supply and want protected. I don’t think you need to spend a lot on the encasement.

@psychmomma Thanks for the instructions on the bed bug cover. I had that all wrong and would’ve really needed that up

We’ve used the same pede for all the kids, including the older girls, so I’ve known her…gosh, nearly 30 years. She said she’ll see the kids through undergrad if we’d like. She’s about to retire (her son finishes his residency soon and will take over), so they’ll age out about the same time she will.

@me29034 We’ve found business casual for D16 (whom we refer to as ā€œtravel sizedā€; she’s 5 feet even and 100 lbs) at JCPenney and at Sears. Mostly dress trousers, plain shirts, cardis, tanks for under the cardis, but you don’t really want a lot of flash for business casual anyway. We actually also found a couple of things at Forever 21 that didn’t scream ā€œteenaged girlā€!

What a great offer @petrichor11 !! Our ped did offer to see him freshman year if he has not yet selected another Dr.

Ours will only see us through Thanksgiving of this year when at some point it was until 21.

When the boys were about 10 we switched to a practice that our whole family could go to. All physicians are dual certified in pediatrics and internal medicine. It has been great for us , and if the boys choose to return to or stay in our area after college , they will have a Dr that knows them.

I’m getting ready to buy my textbooks! The bookstore posted them but my history class is TBD. The total book cost for the 3 classes that require books and have them posted is about $300. The 4th class is my seminar which there are no books for. The most expensive class is my math class which itself costs about $200 but the books are used for the next class in the series as well which I have to take in the spring. The math class is also the only one with an actual textbook. The others have novels and nonfiction books.

@readingclaygirl have you checked Amazon for used books?

Yes. @Undercovermom1 this particular book and access code(s) aren’t on there. It’s fine though, I have scholarship money I put aside for books. The rest of my books are fairly inexpensive ($30 at the most). I

I had a pleasant surprise at our college bookstore. They actually price match Amazon and other book distributors for new, used , online or rental books.
