Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

How is your D feeling about leaving so soon? @sseamom

I think at this point she’s feeling as ready as she can. She and her roommate have coordinated who is bringing what, we’ve purchased everything we can from here and have a list of what to buy there, she has her classes and book list, she’s kinda sorta packed, and it’s obvious that her HS days are already a nice memory, but in the PAST. She’s moved from being nervous to mostly excited, and I think that’s a good thing.

She just got word that our insurance waiver was accepted so YAY! we just saved $2,000! She and her GroupMe chatters are all very active in sharing information as it comes out, and she tells us. That’s been a big help.

We need to talk a little more about the likely grade drop. S’s major will be difficult and is known for giving lower grades than he is accustomed to receiving. I’m not sure it matters what I tell him though - he will be his harshest critic and needs to learn how to cope with disappointment and not being perfect. I wish he had learned that lesson in high school, though.

@psychmomma I completely agree.

Is somebody else’s child scared that he / she will not be able to keep up with rigor of selected school? As much as she is excited, she is scared. That is funny that according to the students FB group, she is not the only one. Half of them thinks they got in by mistake.

@Ballerina016 My son would never admit to being nervous , but I suspect he is. His program is going to be very rigorous with many students graduating with double , even triple majors with almost all of them graduating in 4 years. I’d be intimidated.

@Ballerina016 - I think my D was scared, especially after she took her college’s placement exams in chemistry and bio. She said they were much harder than the AP exams she took. I think this response is pretty normal

@Ballerina016 - Haha we have that going for us too- without the excitement though.

His FB group had a funny post a few days ago. A kid asked if anyone else felt clueless. Many agreed and said they are “winging this whole college thing”.

It is called imposter syndrome. Please pass this onto your kids.

1st semester bills have been paid!

Thank you for the article @texaspg DD found it very interesting.

I just realized this but I move in in exactly 1 month!!!

It’s funny that my D is so different from most of your kids. Confidence has never been an issue with her. In fact she is generally over confident. She was never a tippy top student like many of your kids - she graduated about 70 out of 400 - but she is somehow convinced that she is going to get all As in college. I’ve keep warning her that it will be harder than she thinks, but I think she will have to learn that for herself.

I’m not concerned about her telling us her grades. She is also an over sharer. I have no doubt that I will hear about all grades as soon as she does.

TBH I’d rather my sweet girl not be overly confident. She’s said to me on occasion “if I’m the smartest person in the room then I’m in the wrong room” meaning that she wants to constantly be in the room with people she can learn from. As Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr once said:

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”

And I love what Eleanor Roosevelt once said:

“A woman is like a tea bag - you can’t tell how strong she is until you put her in hot water.”

Love that Eleanor Roosevelt quote @HappyFace2018 Actually I admire her a bit- she was definitely gutsy! She’s the first Honorary Degree recipient from my college

Well we started ordering books tonight. There are a few that will be useful to have early. We compared prices and paid approximately half as much by ordering from Amazon. S still needs to get a couple things that are only through the school and also the iClicker 2. Darn - I wish my D wouldn’t have sold hers!

@psychmomma I had to google iclicker. I wonder if those are common. Was that listed for one of your son’s classes?

I think it is used at schools which give points for class participation. Classes which use the iclickers will have much higher attendance rates.

I know OU uses them. I even saw them in a vending machine on the first floor of one of the dorms. It also had earbuds, usb cords, and various charges. I’ve seen similar vending machines in airports (without the iclickers).

I’m glad the iClickers weren’t around in the early 90s! I had two or three GenEd classes where I showed up on the first day to get the syllabus, and then came back for the mid-term and final! (Taking Microecon with 800 people really wasn’t my thing so I just did the reading).

I think an iClicker was added to my D’s booklist.
