Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

D will not be bringing stuffed animals, but geez does she have a thing for throw pillows. She has more decorations and pillows all to make her room feel homey - all color coordinated. It will be a nicely decorated room and I am happy if she is happy.

@carolinamom2boys Totally telling this to my dad ā€œI read that this psychologist saidā€¦ā€ He says no one liked the girls who did it when he went to college. My mom is like ā€œbring them if you want, I don’t care. You know if you don’t, your sister will confiscate them!ā€

I guess it’s a personal decision @readingclaygirl

DD took her favorite toys with her last summer when she spent two month away from home at her summer program. She is taking her pillow and blanket with her to Boston along with her favorite toys. Her pre orientation program starts in less then a month. It all looks surreal now.

Yes, it is going way too fast.
I thought there were 4 weeks until drop off but, I looked at the calendar & it is only 3 weeks from Thursday!
Oh no!

@psychmomma D16 took a pillow pet and a owl ā€œpillowā€ with her to her summer program. It surprised me she didn’t take her stuffed zebra that she has slept with since she was 2 years old. It may be going with her during the second exodus.

I had giant containers of the kids’ stuffed toys and when I tried to cull the herd they each grabbed a bunch to keep. S’s favorites were Wishbone, and the seven dwarves. D took a few small dolls to college and I sent her a few Snoopys, too. I still fall for the cute stuffed things in the stores on occasion, and they often make it into a care package.

DS16 just looked at what books he needs. Only 3 ranging in price from $ 10.00 to $ 45.00. Woo hoo!!! =D>

Yay @carolinamom2boys

Wow @carolinamom2boys that is amazing. Twice now I have started to look at the price of D18’s books, gotten frustrated and quite.

@labegg I’m sure we’ll make up for it next semester .

D has expressed no wish to pack or ship any of her bedding, favorite or otherwise. She wants a fresh start, which is fine with me since it would probably cost more than the items are worth to ship them. I am making her a flannel ā€œrag quiltā€ that is almost done, though my sewing machine is suddenly making garbled stitches and I don’t know why. I’m not good enough at it to understand what happened, since all I did was change the spool of thread. Argh.

Our shopping trip to Nordstom Rack was a success, but we’ll need to supplement with an online order. Still, it was helpful.

The conference call was full of good information, so now we know what to expect on move-in day as far as the nitty gritty details about payment plans and as-yet unprocessed scholarships. We even, in case we needed to know, learned the hours for the cafeteria and that all windows come with miniblinds. Oh, and there’s a Walgreens a few blocks away.

D says she wants to rent everything possible and will only purchase if that is the only option. I’m exploring the rental options over the next few days.

@sseamom Maybe adjust the tension on the sewing machine? And check to see that it is threaded properly.

I checked both-I changed nothing between spools. About to go tinker with it. I guess I can admit here that when I first got going, it was my son who figured out I had the thread wrong in the bobbin case…this is not a thing I do especially well.

I’m no seamstress either- @sseamom- but homemade gifts are the best! Is it a surprise? For graduation, my mom made me and my sister cross stitches. Mine says Dream Believe Achieve

D16 is checking to see if her $500 outside scholarship has arrived at the college. The funds must be applied to tuition, books, or lab fees. But her tuition is already 100 percent covered. Her books so far cost very little. No lab fees this year. I wonder what the college will do with the money. Contribute it to tuition? Could it be saved and carried over to a later school year? I guess she needs to call both the issuer and the college. Why is nothing ever simple?

My understanding from others on CC is if tuition is covered by a merit award, then they will cut you a check for your overage. If tuition is covered by a need based award, then the outside scholarship reduces your need based aid. I am sure individual schools may vary on this though and calling the school is a good idea. That’s a good problem to have! Congrats!

No, not a surprise, D helped me choose the fabrics. It’s various shades of peach with some geometrics and some prints like shoes (of COURSE), dancers, silhouettes. It’s flannel and what is done so far looks very comforting. But I can’t figure it out, so I took a photos of the problem and sent it to an accomplished seamstress friend of mine. I wish she lived close enough to come over and take a look in person, but this will have to do.

Whine.

Just checking in. We are still on vacation but will be returning soon. Guess who called DS the afternoon before he left? Yes, his place of employment wants him to come for his first day the day after we arrive home!?!? Nothing like waiting until nearly the last minute. So glad we have so much done already since having him working will make the last 3 weeks fly by. Still some university system setups to do, tuition to pay, school supplies, books and short list of clothing to buy, etc.

@sseamom, hope you can figure it out. My mom made some of her and our clothes on the sewing machine back in the day, but I just made like curtains. Did you try changing out the needle?

@Cheeringsection, enjoy your vacation! The employer probably had someone leaving.
