Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

In two days my sweet girl is coming home from her summer camp counselor job a few hours away (she’s been gone for a few months). My hubby and I are extremely excited but promised each other we’d keep our emotions in check. As we sat on the porch yesterday we said simultaneously “I miss her so much”.
Remembering how she needed to stand on a little box to reach the microphone as she recited the Lords Prayer in church and now we both look up at her (she’s 6’0 tall). Just can’t believe we have less than three weeks with her before she heads to college :((

A bunch of the girls from I follow on FB are freaking out about not hearing back from student services about billing stuff. I’m glad I don’t have any problems now but it’s really weird to hear these people downgrade the school and curse it out for not answering the phone

D’s school sent out a message to all incoming freshmen that no personal emails would be answered this week as it’s “crunch time” and that if you have a pressing question, to simply call. D called another department with a question and they picked right up. But they really don’t want to answer questions that can easily be answered by looking at the website. People get very stressed about financial issues-which seems natural to me when tens of thousands of dollars are on the line. At least they are venting among classmates and not calling the school bad names in their emails.

I think I’ve solved the sewing issue-or at least solved what I need to do. This appears to be a common problem for new sewers, and in particular with basic machines. After work I’ll try the suggested solutions.

We rarely check in luggage so I need help from experienced travelers here. I just purchased a 32" suitcase. Is this the allowable size for JetBlue? I am confused if they count wheels as part of 62" allowance.

@Ballerina016 it looks like wheels are included in the measurements. If you look at the website, where it describes oversized luggage fees, it mentions that wheels are part of the measurement. The 32" sounds ok, assuming that once you add the width and height you’re not over 62".

http://www.jetblue.com/travel/baggage/

Thank you @sseamom I find it strange that they don’t put dimensions when you buy a luggage. It only says 32". We are on vacation now so I don’t have a measurement tape. I was using 8 1/2 X 11" paper to measure

I think 32 is too big. Your limit is 62 which is the sum of height + width + length. You should go measure, but I’m pretty sure that is oversize.

Whew…lots to catch up on as I haven’t been able to check in daily for a few weeks. Glad to read everyone is doing reasonably well and has good/exciting news.

We’re busy getting my S ready - we leave on Monday to take him to school as, thanks to the leadership program he was accepted into, he has move in on Tuesday. We too have a large growing pile of stuff, and I did a quick test pack of our vehicle last night to see how much would fit which was a lot more than I expected, so that was a positive.

My wife is slowly going through S’s room (with him) and weeding out old clothes, setting aside what he needs now and what we can bring in mid-August (as we head back for parent/family orientation). He’s also making (slow) progress on cleaning out all the junk he’s accumulated through the HS years.

Fortunately, we’re down to last minute odds and ends.
Tuition has been paid
My S has a partial schedule

I’ll second the choice to use collegestudentinsurance.com. We could have covered him up to 10% of our home owners policy, but our high deductible didn’t make that a smart financial choice. A renters policy through our insurer with similar overall coverage was less, but didn’t cover accidental damage or loss.

Hard to believe it was just a year ago and we were getting ready to start applications, and now here we are 4 days to our departure date 8-| . No tears here yet - just nervous anticipation. Whew…

4 DAYS @dbjs70 That’s really soon! I think he’s the first to launch, with @sseamom 's D close behind. Best of luck

Thanks, @readingclaygirl,

I think he might be too. He certainly is among his friends, and by at least 2-3 weeks.

It’ll be a busy couple of weeks - leadership program, Honors orientation the 13th-15th, parent and family orientation the 16th-17th, regular orientation 17th-21st, and classes start the 22nd.

@me29034 maybe she’s ok. If the bag is taller than wider, which is most likely, it would fit the required dimensions. They don’t mean square inches, just the total inches of one side of each dimension (linear inches). See this luggage:
http://www.ebags.com/product/it-luggage/megalite-luggage-collection-30-exp-spinner/281924?productid=10459870
It is 31" tall and comes in at 59 linear inches. So depending on the other measurements of @Ballerina016 's luggage, especially since she didn’t measure it with a tape measure, it could be fine.

@dbjs70 I didn’t think that insurance covered loss.

@justathought1, according to this they do cover “accidental loss…”

When I spoke with someone, they told me it didn’t cover loss so I am glad to see this. I will call back to verify because I wanted to cancel my Sprint insurance if this one covered loss. Thanks!

@dbjs70 I just spoke with someone and it does cover things like accidental loss like water damage, but not just if you lose the phone.

@psychmomma - “cull the herd” LOL!!

@sseamom - could the bobbin not be catching correctly? After you threaded the top needle, did you do the slow turn to grab the bobbin thread? Are you getting stitching on both top and bottom but too much thread on top, or something else? I’m assuming you didn’t adjust the thread tension at all - but maybe it got nudged in the threading process?

My son’s nickname isn’t MacGyver for nothing. I had him look at it (and he took sewing in home ec). It turned out to be several problems-a bent needle, the wrong thread (it was upholstery thread), the bobbin was threaded wrong and the top thread tension was wrong. It’s a good size for a throw right now, so I’ll see if D wants it as is or if she wants me to buy more fabric and make it longer.

D’s best friend also came over tonight and helped convince her that no, she will NOT need many cold weather clothes on this trip and maybe she doesn’t actually need all those shoes. Go best friend! Prior to that, the girls had dinner with two of their former teachers who are now working for the foundation that supports their HS. Both of them are the same age as my older D (26). Their also EXACTLY like D-always doing doing. They had also suggest packing less. Of course I’VE been saying the same thing for weeks, but what do I know?

T-minus 4 days and counting…

I’m glad that you got your machine fixed. My husband is a McGyver as well. It’s a blessing and a curse . One winter when we had an ice storm and lost power, he rigged a TV/VCR combo with a cigarette lighter adaptor to hook up to a car battery, and we watched Polar Express with our neighbors in front of the fire ( blessing) . That same storm, rather than stay in a nice warm hotel for a second night , he decided that we would go on a supply trip to get space heaters, food, and some kind of inverter to power my blow dryer so we could return home.( curse) Thankfully, power was restored before we ever got home . ( curse) Hopefully DS inherited some of those problem solving skills; they should serve him well as a CS major.

It’s amazing how we ever survived not knowing anything compared to the other people around us @sseamom. You’re not alone . My husband and kids will be convinced by neighbors , peers, other health professionals about info I’ve told him repeatedly. ^#(^

Stop counting the days. It will make you crazy . We’re here for you .

We will all support you as you make this transition @sseamom ! That’s why we are here.
