Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Best of luck @sseamom and especially to your D!

I’ve been away on vacation for a little over week and have no hope of catching up on all the posts I missed. Hope everyone is doing well with their planning. We are leaving in less than 3 weeks and are not ready - not with the stuff or mentally. I think it finally hit S yesterday as he willingly did his wash and began reading his required summer reading book. We just ordered a laptop and are still working on the bedding/shipping stuff. I really cannot believe it is August.

We have dorm family room and living room. Not a single item is “packed”. It is all in whatever it first came home in. Goal this week is to wash sheets, etc. we did get all books ordered over the weekend. If his math level has to change he will have to exchange that book quickly so that is rented from the campus bookstore but all else is through Amazon. Many states have sales tax holidays in August for back to
School shopping. Google to get the dates.

@HappyFace2018 - I loved that story of finding your daughter already on her “own” at six months old! My DS was admitted to the NICU at 4-7 days of age for dehydration and a couple other things and I keep thinking of those days. In fact, I admit to smiling when he didn’t bother closing the bathroom door and I heard ample evidence of
non-dehydration.

Regarding beds/choice/etc. - DS and his two roommates have had a couple of group chats to discuss so far, but apparently the scheduling around work and sleep for the three of them has been complicated.

I’m aggravated to read how restrictive P’s rules are about tea kettles and microwaves. (Tea kettles only from a list of models that apparently all stopped being made five years ago, though you can “request approval” of new models in person with the understanding that they may be dismantled/destroyed to be checked; microwaves are prohibited unless attached to their in-house rental fridge for $270/year rental.) I’m now officially one of the cranky old people who says, “when I was your age, I had a toaster oven in my room” and things like that.

Hugs to you all. You will be ready and it won’t be easy but it will be ok.

We are bringing back some of the same stuff and adding a few kitchen items, D and her apartment mates have a list and they are all signing up to bring different things. She also wants to get a lamp and a door mirror, but we can get them there. It’s nice that I already have the bedding and towels washed and stored from when she came home.

Here with my sweet girl at HER doctor visit
 she just turned 18 so
for the first time
I’m not with her as she visits with the doctor. I’ve been crying (silently) since she walked back. The sweet little lady at the check in counter noticed me and came over to console me. Made me really cry then. New mom’s waiting and pregnant women are now crying with me. Ya’ll gonna have to pray me through this [-O<

@fretfulmother, my P student ended up in a triple too! We went ahead and rented both the microfridge combo and the bed loft kit. Have you seen the P-ton college facebook web page? Not “Facebook”, it’s on the university website, and you have to sign into your P account to access. We had lots of fun seeing who was on her dorm floor.

Just paid the fall semester bill, but we don’t fly out for another 4 weeks.

Okay so this just overwhelmed me with less than three weeks to go!

You won’t need a bed skirt. If the bed is raised it will be too short and if you have drawers under the bed it will get in the way. During the day the comforter will drape over the side of the bed since it is against the wall (in most cases).

Area rug depends, my D had a nice carpet in the room so didn’t need it.

Bed risers are not allowed everywhere and not needed with height adjustable beds.

Some of the furniture items like tables, futons, etc depend on space available.

I would not recommend bringing chlorine bleach.

Iron/ironing board and drying rack might not be needed. Also not sure if most schools still use quarters.

Some of the tech items might not be needed like dvd player, printer, tv, video games, depends on student.

I would not recommend that they bring a scale.

Copy of social security card won’t do any good and might not be a good idea to keep in dorm room.
If they don’t need to bring their card, leave it at home in a safe place.

In some areas raincoat, rainboots are essential.

My mom says to always carry a flashlight and an umbrella in your bag. You never know when you’ll need. I have been in multiple dorm rooms on overnights and have never seen a bed skirt. @mommdc is right, if the bed is raised it would be too short. And another tip, I have no idea if my college is the only one that recommends it but they tell you to put Public Saftey’s phone number in your phone. I think that’s a good idea.

Thank you so much @mommdc and @readingclaygirl. Someone was attempting to be helpful (and I appreciate their concern) and sent this to me. I wear a FitBit Blaze and could literally see the heart rate monitor take off X_X

You can take what you think they most likely will need, then if they find they need anything else, then there is parent weekend and/or Amazon prime.

I love that list - it proves someone is crazier than me - my list wasn’t nearly that gigantic!

That list is WAY over the top, imo, but I suppose everyone will do what they think they need to do. D is all packed, and all 4 suitcases/bags weight 50 pounds-the top limit-EACH. H and I have bet her that she will send at least one full bag home with us. Good thing my son is dropping us off because I sure can’t lift 50 pounds. And H and D will be doing the carrying at the dorm.

@sseamom, safe travels tomorrow!

Well, my sweet girl just received an email from GW letting her know that “GW Housing Self Check In Is Now Open!” :((

Best of luck @sseamom during your trip & move in!

You and your family will be on my mind all
day tomorrow and the rest of the week @sseamom

I know we had touched on this at one point but thought I would bring it up again–concern about safety on campus. So while safety is a concern for both males and females I was wondering what precautions you are encouraging your children to take? I have talked about general awareness and have started to discuss date rape. I ordered a book on personal safety but am not sure D16 will even read it (it was one recommended here). I also ordered some pepper spray and a kit that can detect “date rape” drugs in drinks. Any other thoughts and ideas?

My son’s school offers a seminar by the campus PD regarding self defense , being more aware, etcetera for both male and female students .
