@lvmjac1, one of D’s possible classes lists the books requirement as “Choose either the package or the individual components”. The package is the textbook and a workbook together, or you can choose each one on its own. When I was researching prices, the package was only available new, and was pretty pricey. However, when I searched the isbn’s for the individual components, I found you can rent the textbook for like $30. Even if we bought D a brand new workbook, we’d still come out way ahead.
Does anyone know how renting workbooks works? I know you’re not supposed to write in or do too much highlighting in a rental or you get charged, so would it be something where you either photocopy the workbook pages or do whatever activity on a separate piece of paper? Apologies in advance if that’s an ignorant question. I never had the option to rent books/workbooks.
Well folks, just got done catching up again from 5 days of not checking in.
We got home late afternoon yesterday from dropping my S off at school. I can tell you iit was great that we were able to move him in without the chaos of a typical move in. No waiting for the elevator, no parking lot craziness, not moving in at the same time as his roommate. All good stuff.
On the downside there are, until Saturday when the RAs arrive, just 3 other kids in his dorm (all in his leadership program), and he’s the only one on his floor. A little creepy for sure, but he seems to be doing fine with it. The program will definitely keep them busy during the day/evening and over the weekend, so that’s good. It’s a great opportunity for them to learn campus too.
We were a little dismayed that the program (or school) didn’t do more to welcome the kids (not even a welcome note on his door). We picked up his key, student id and moved him in. That was it until the program’s welcome session/dinner that evening. On the positive side we did get a mini general orientation as representatives from each of the school’s supporting departments (public safety, health services, residential, etc) were there and gave brief presentations which should make our return trip for the official parent/family orientation a little easier to navigate.
We’re definitely riding more of the emotional roller coaster now than at any time before departing for school, or even while we were there for move-in. All of the planning/shopping was largely successful; there are only a few things we need to get him to help organize his space (mostly for his shelves/closet). I only had one brief moment of panic when I couldn’t find the power cord for his alarm clock…
I’ll still be checking in here. Best of luck to everyone with their own dropoffs/rides home in the coming weeks. Soon the focus will be back on S19…
We had our first emotional mom moment here today, 3 weeks out. We were talking about how I leave in 3 weeks and stuff, like how I’m going to call or text everyday and when parents weekend is and I look over and my mom is holding back tears and her voice is shakey. This isn’t going to be easy for her
@LexieAnn, is this for a foreign language class? My D said their homework was online and she never used her workbook. So maybe find out from former students or professor?
@RyanG1207 I can PM you the email address of Justin, the store manager, if you like? Two days ago they had 77, yesterday they had 55. No idea what they still have! Let me know.
Thanks @livinginLA and no worries about getting the cart, I just checked IKEA’s website and they have 32 of them in the Houston store today and and they are getting another 10 or so by the weekend. But if Houston was out of stock, St. Louis still has 46 so all is not lost.
@mommdc, yes it’s a foreign language. She’s not buying anything yet, because she thinks they put her in the wrong class. (Placement test score suggested a higher one. I think they have more hoops to jump through to make sure they really belong in those upper classes.) Hooray for Amazon Prime, we’ll get it figured out later on. She’s seen the advice of waiting until your first class or a week or so in to see if you even need the books. I remember not buying my freshman Biology book because I was paying for everything myself and could bring myself to pay the sticker price. Figured I’d get all the info in the lectures. If only I had gone to more lectures. Ha!! I did order her some paperbacks she needed for another class. Found most of them used or really cheap new copies, so no complaints here.
Thanks @readingclaygirl. I think the latest she’ll have everything hashed out is orientation, which is still a few days before classes start.
Sidebar–I kind of want that ikea cart now…just because everyone else is getting one. Peer pressure! LOL @lvmjac1 and @RyanG1207, what are your kids going to be storing in the cart?
Hi all, my D saw the cart initially when we toured a dorm room at the UMD-CP. The student stored various things on its shelves and swore by its convenience. Since then its been one of the only two items she showed any interest in regarding the dorm mountain amassing in our spare bedroom. I think she will either use it for her Keurig, related accompaniments, other typical dorm room nonperishable food items and maybe an overflow for all her makeup paraphernalia. She does not wear a lot of makeup but you would be surprised at that realization if you saw the staggering amount of makeup products that have taken over her room! My D is not that organized at present but she swears dorm life will be different. I applaud her positive and optimistic thoughts, but remain skeptical that much will change from one small space (her room) to another (her dorm room). She is a very organized and focused student, but in terms of everything else she is the epitome of complete disarray. LOL.
I must say I was impressed with my D in keeping the dorm room neat. She also mentioned that she and her roommate were the only ones that would clean the shared bathroom. Which was made easy by mom bringing a swiffer with dry and wet cloths that can just be tossed and disinfecting cleaning wipes.
I just got an email from my college about having to do AlcoholEdu and Haven- online trainings about alcohol abuse/poisoning and sexual assault. Did anyone else’s kid have to do this??
