@readingclaygirl yes, most colleges requires something like this, my DD had to take similar on-line training before registration.
@readingclaygirl Yes, my sweet girl just received the email from GW for the mandatory training.
I must have missed the initial cart post. Can someone please post a link to the cart. Like @Undercovermom1 Iām feeling cart envy :))
S has to sign up and attend those (Al Ed and Sexual Assault) sessions on campus. My other kidsā schools had them online.

@dbjs70 Weāll be moving my son into RIT a week from tomorrow. Iām also looking forward to smaller crowds than the main move in day, though there will probably be more than there were for your son. Any specific advice - things you would have done differently had you known specifics about RIT? Is he in a long or a square room? My son is in a long double. Thanks in advance!
Hi @HappyFace2018 here is the link to the cart.
@LexieAnn To be honest, my S left room decisions up to me and I wanted to get this cart to store miscellaneous items that are used daily or often, but canāt be stored in the 3 drawer dresser, in the closet or in the desk. Iāve been eyeing this cart since they first introduced it a few years back!
FYI Target has something similar http://m.target.com/p/storage-cart-white-room-essentials/-/A-50659905
Nice find, @Undercovermom1 !
My sonās roommateās mother was able to get pictures of their dorm room. It is soooooo tiny. Let me know if you all have any organizational tips for tiny rooms. Also, the school does not have beds that loft. Does anyone know where I could purchase a kit to loft the bed? Iāve looked online but it seems most are tied to specific colleges.
@Justathought1 I would make sure lofting is allowed before you buy anything. Also I got my room assignment with the roommate I requested. One of the orientation leaders even drew up a floor plan of the building for us and put it on Facebook so we can figure out where our rooms are in relation to the stairs.
@Justathought1 if they are allowed there are risers but they only raise it a few inches.
Can the boys bunk the bed so they have more floorspace?
Is he bringing suitcases? They should fit under the bed.
Iāve bought risers that are 7.5 inches and the beds already have some space under them. I donāt think that the beds can be turned into bunk beds. I sure wish they could. Letās just hope they get along because one would be miserable staying with someone in such close proximity that you didnāt like. My husband created a space plan for the room where there desks are at opposite ends of the rooms to give them a little distance from each other. Weāve seen the roommateās class schedule and they have classes at different times most of the time so it gives them the room to themselves for a while. We leave on Monday, but after seeing the pictures, we have to rethink some of the stuff we had packed and ready to go My son is taking it well. He said he just needs a bed, but he is an only child who has always had his own room so this will be interesting.
My D was finally assigned a roommate yesterday, but hasnāt made contact yet. I hope the roommate doesnāt also rent a microfridge or there will be no space left. Hopefully, sheās a coffee drinker and D wonāt have to get her own machine.
She is also dealing with a tiny room - it would be nearly impossible to fit both desks, two small dressers and two beds against the walls without lofting. She even has to share a regular-sized closet. I have no idea what the closet set-up is, but she is bringing some hanging sweater and shoe bins which may or may not even fit, width and length-wise. Since sheās sharing a closet and has a two-drawer dresser, she did pack and hold some extra drawers at BBB, and another cube storage thing. I think her turntable, vinyl collection and nice speaker will have to remain at home. She really wants to make room for a chair, but I donāt see how it would work unless she throws her desk out the window or something. The perks are a learning community, a bathroom shared with only two people, and air conditioning, but man, that room is small.
At this point, Iām thinking all packing will have to occur in the 48 hours prior to boarding the plane. DD is still never home and is working through Wednesday. In the meantime, I just do laundry constantly and have accumulated 35 space bags. Can I somehow flatten a pair of Timberlands and two Doc Martens? haha
@eh1234 I would have your D make contact ASAP so you can avoid the micro fridge overload situation. That sounds like a tiny, tiny room. I think my dorm room is pretty big. One wall is all closets, built in drawers and the sink. Iāve been in several and they donāt feel cramped even with a half dozen people hanging out.
@eh1234 how many square feet is the dorm?
D16 was lucky in that there happens to be a video tour on YouTube for her exact room. Itās a very old building and the rooms are not uniform in size or layout at all, so the video was helpful. A long and rectangular room, closets flanking the door. Large window on the opposite side. Lots of wall space on each side, but the ceiling is a little wonky. If the bed is raised too high they run the risk of smashing their faces into the ceiling if they roll over toward the wall because it slopes. Lofting is not an option.
Iāve not had a lot of time to peruse CC much the past few weeks - Iām afraid Iāll never catch up with this thread!
My D leaves in ONE WEEK. She is in marching band, so needs to be there one week before classes start.
We have most of her dorm shopping done, and things gathered and already in our front hallway by the door. She needs to pack her clothes and toiletries (but she has some packed already and in her shower caddy and makeup bagā¦
She was assigned to the LLC she requested, International and Modern Languages - and was sent a video of the floor plan of the rooms. Weirdly configured room, where a huge 6 ft long closet juts out into the interior footprint of the room. Other than that, the room would be 12 x15⦠so because of that, they almost have to lift their beds up, lofted or captainās style. Thankfully, the beds are the kind with adjustable heights meant to be either height. D was hoping not to lift her bed so high, but I donāt think sheāll have a choice. She will have to at least do the captainās bed with her short dresser underneath. Personally, I think this is good thing, it gives them more storage underneath and makes more room on the floor.
She, as of now, has no roommate. She was initially assigned a roommate. The roommate contacted her and said she preferred to be called by a boyās name. She thought nothing of it, but then looked her up on FB and instagram - seems like the roommate may be transgender. Ok. We talked about that and she (and we, her parents) decided that was not a big deal, or any deal, really⦠I mention all this because yesterday, the roommate contacted D and said sheād changed rooms and would no longer be rooming with her. roommate did not say why. Iām guessing she (roommate) asked for a single room, but Iāve no idea, and yeah, itās none of my business, eitherā¦
But unfortunately, D has no roommate as of now. I really think she needs a roommate!! Left on her own, D tends to hole up in her room too much, imo. I think sheāll feel less lonely, too. And yes, she wants a roommate. Maybe they will assign another roommate at the last minute, hopefully.
In the meantime, I told D to just get moved in, pick a side of the room, put your things away, and assume someone else will be moving in and leave half of the space for them. So, weāll see.
Btw, we found some useful things at Bed Bath and Beyond - Since she may not have a proper nightstand to use, we bought a clip-on wood tray table for her alarm clock and whatever else she may need it for. Bought a fabric organizer that hangs over the bedrail, to hold phone, glasses, headphones, her e-reader, retainer, etc.
We still need to get her clip-on reading lamp for her bedrail, and a macbook - her current laptop was bought in 7th grade. Time for an upgrade.
Good luck to everyone in packing and getting their kids off! (And Iām sorry my posts are so long-winded - I like to hear myself type, I guess, :D)
Speaking of dorm room furniture arrangements - when looking at the floor plan, D suggested putting the beds across from each other, and at the other end of the room - which is across from the long closet - putting the two desks side by side on the wall.
I think thatās a bad idea, having the desks right next to each other. i feel like everyone needs their own little space, especially in a small dorm room, and they should each have their own corner of a room for their desk/study space. (and the furniture can be arranged for that, by placing one bed along the middle of the long wall, and having a desk at either end. The bedsā headboards and footboards are over 5 ft tall, btw, so the person sleeping in this bed would still have privacy.)
But thatās just me. What do yāall think?
Iāve seen pictures online of dorm rooms where the two desks were next to each other so apparently some are okay with it - but Iād think that would really not be ideal. It would distract me to have someone right there, next to me, while I was studying or even surfing the 'net.
@readingclaygirl, my D had to complete an online course for her university, about sexual assault and alcohol/drug ed. Has to be completed by first day of classes - Iām happy to report that she completed it over a week ago.
She doesnāt have other things done that she needs to before next week (memorizing band music, and completing common reader and submitting a timed, online essay) but she did get that out of the way.
