Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@bgbg4us My D18 has been cutting her own hair for a few years now using YouTube as her instructor. She says she doesn’t trust anybody to cut her own hair.

Your D is probably ready for a change. My introvert S16 certainly is ready for a change. He expressed multiple times over the last 2 years that college would be a clean slate. I think he felt a bit “trapped” in how he was perceived by his classmates, many of whom had been in his class since kindergarten.

@carolinamom2boys I packed several boxes of tissues for Dorm Mountain. I was running out of space so I put them in the mini fridge! Then I realized the microwave would be a good place to put his bike helmet for the move.

@sseamom What a great close knit community! @RyanG1207 That ability to build a new reputation is something all my friends and I are excited about!

Hi all arrived in SC safe n sound with no traffic the entire way! Yeah!

@carolinamom2boys we need to build a pipeline for ur wonderful southern Kool-Aid up north. It’s wonderful!
We have today to add in stuff stored at Grammy’s n then we leave for Clemson early tomorrow. No matter how many times we have moved S14 in previously - it’s still too soon n I am not ready. I don’t know if I will ever be quite ready but I know it is appropriate n it is his time. The funny thing is that everytime I think he’s got this handling life on his own, he throws me a curve ball. Last night at dinner he tells me “oh yeah I went to use my card the other day when I was out (with his friend) n it didn’t work?” I asked him “did u activate it?” He answered “did I what?” I had to explain when they send you a new debit card u have to activate it just like the little sticker on the front says…S14 replies “oh I just took that off but didn’t read it”! “I guess I should have read it!” Then all of a sudden he turns to me real seriously n says “why didn’t you tell me I had to activate it!?” I laughed n said “I thought you read the sticker n took care of it since lately your stock answer to me about everything is ‘I got this mom’!” He laughed n said can we do it tomorrow?

@Waiting2exhale I am dying to listen to the song u suggested but having difficulties logging on with Grammys internet connection n she cannot remember where she wrote it down. Lol.

It’s funny as soon as I drive out of state D16 calls me in a panic. All of a sudden Northeastern wants a Sibling Verification form completed (so that they can complete her financial aid), then sent to Clemson so their financial aid office can verify his enrollment (like the FAFSA wasn’t enough) n then send it to Northeastern! They want it now when Clemson is in their busiest - a few days before classes start on Wednesday! Timing is everything n there’s is absolutely the worst.

@bgbg4us- I purchased 7.25 inch risers for $8.88 at Walmart. They seemed sturdy while we were in his dorm and he hasn’t said otherwise since we left.

Northeastern is worse or Clemson is worse? @lvmjac1

Omg Clemson is wonderful (they drink the Kool-Aid) Northeastern has been very difficult to acclimate to. Not sure if it’s just acclimating to a new schools system but of the three other universities I have personally dealt with (north n south private n public) Northeastern has by far posed the most difficult adjustment to even before D gets on campus. I am hoping D has gotten most of her trials n tribulations out in the beginning n it will be smooth sailing going forward - fingers n toes crossed!

@lvmjac1 Yes and if he pays anything automatically with that card (Spotify, Uber, etc) he has to update with the new expiration date and maybe security code.

I really think one reason my kid (this gen?) trips up with “adulting” is that she (they) don’t read as much as we do. Instructions, letters, anything longer than a Tweet. I know that’s a HUGE exaggeration, but I keep seeing little examples of the post-literate life in the young’n. (Now, get off my lawn…)

@dyiu13 I think a lot of people my age don’t read but then again I saw something that said 30% of American adults have not read a book in the past year. I’m an avid reader. I always have been.

Okay so I have a question, a friend of mine just said the BBB coupons never expire. If that is the case why do they have an expiration date :-?

I saw them take coupons from 2009 in the line ahead me yesterday. This lady had a stack at least 2 inches thick. She was nice enough to give me two for my purchases. They won’t honor texted ones past the date though. They have a expiration date on them because they’re assuming most people won’t ask to use them.

Can you use more than one coupon at a time?

Yes . You can use one for each item, but not more than one for each item. And if you have a 20% off entire order, you can only use that coupon .

Dang it! I have thrown them away because I thought they expired and my husband attempted use one (expired) and was told he could not.

DH and I are on the road. All moved in and squared away. S was ready to be on his own and start exploring his dorm and campus.

Despite him knowing everything in dorm mountain, when we were unpacking it, he said “This is a lot of stuff!”

No breakdowns for anyone. Just hugs, kisses and a “we’re proud of you” with a lump in the throat.

Now back to younger S to get ready for that all important junior year.

@lvmjac1 That’s funny about your son not activating a new debit card. Exact same thing happened to us last week (except S16 says I confused him when I said his PIN was probably already set, so that’s why he took off the sticker). Live and learn! Didn’t know it was a problem until he tried to use it to pay for parking.

Speaking of parking, all summer he’s been paying to park at his part time “volunteer” job so the mounting cost is really eating at him. I’m not reimbursing him because he could have gotten himself a paying job and he also could have made arrangements for cheaper parking. This week he got a parking ticket because he didn’t leave the parking pay stub face up on his dash. He has the receipt so he can dispute the ticket – but that’s more bureaucracy to wade through.

Just had a discussion with S14 about credit cards. Is he ready? Maybe . . .

It’s official! I have completely lost my mind. Yesterday my sweet girl and I did a little shopping at BBB. In unloading/organizing the items purchased…I realized that I really like the large BBB bags…they hold a lot and they are pretty sturdy. So…I decided I needed 20 more bags to double bag and condense her dorm mountain. I call the store and they said they will sell me 20 bags for $2.00. I took that to mean $2.00 each so…I quickly realized I only needed 5 :)) I get to the store and the guy says “here’s your 20 bags for $2.14”. I said wait! He said “yes, 10 cents a bag!”

@HappyFace2018 :

I starting saving all of the BBB coupons since maybe November of last year after some of the parents here said the coupons never expire.

I am not going to lie, I would be crazy embarrassed to present such coupons, but I’ll gladly send you half of them.

(If you guys don’t see me post on CC after the first week of September, it is because as we are finally compiling daughter’s items for her mid-September move-in, I may have spontaneously combusted from the stress of attempting to present the other half of those old BBB coupons.)

The only things we bought at BBB were a shower caddy (nifty 2 piece design, and no @HappyFace2018, you don’t need to run back to BBB as I’m sure the one your D got is just fine  )

and a backrest pillow in gray since Walmart didn’t have that color

It was convenient to order online and pick up at the store close to her school on move in day.

I just found out that one of my son’s best friends from daycare and after school care will also be attending CofC. =D>
