Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

So glad to hear things have worked out so great for him @carolinamom2boys !

Not able to get the link to work but Google for article in WSJon “mobile phone heist”. Warn your kids that this has\is happening with mobile banking. One classmate of DS’s got hacked already this week.

Taking a turn in the passenger seat. Didn’t get an early start, but it’s all good. Got everything to fit, bike is still attached. #:-S I did have a brief moment of panic this morning when I couldn’t find the letter I wrote to give to D when we leave. You know, one of those ‘put it somewhere safe so I won’t forget it’, then forget where the safe place is. It actually was where I had put it, just slipped out of sight.

No set time to move in tomorrow. I’ll sit back and work on D’s schedule. I know we’ll have shopping to do, and orientation starts in the evening.

Sending good vibes to all those moving in this weekend.

Just caught up and am happy to read about the many successful move ins. Keeping my fingers crossed that the same holds true for those still to come. Best of luck to all!

Safe travels to all those making their way to school. Good luck to everyone getting ready to start their fall semester.
DS had his first day of class yesterday & I actually got a 1st day picture text!

Glad today’s move-ins went smoothly but I hope you get your missing piece soon, @readingclaygirl !

Also happy to hear that so many of your kiddos are adjusting well. @carolinamom2boys I’m pretty sure my ex would have picked such activities. He has a screenname that includes the word “hacker”.

@sseamom me too! It’s stressing me out. But all is well. My roommate and I are getting along great, we had a good floor meeting, and some of the other girls on the floor helped my roommate raise her bed up so our fridge can go underneath. The bathrooms on our floor are being renovated which is a HUGE pain because we have to go to another floor or into the adjoining building. But it should only be for a week or so. Our class is even smaller than I thought- 76 residents and 30 or so commuters. I’ve talked to my mom 3 times since she left and FaceTimed her once. She’s coming tomorrow with another fan because it’s super hot in here! And the windows don’t have screens so we can’t open them. Oh another pain in the butt thing- the access code for my math textbook was actually in the textbook but of course it didn’t tell you that so I bought the additional access code for $100 and am returning it tomorrow (other people have done so with success). It’s our community service project in the morning

@readingclaygirl, see if your mom can get an expandable window screen

@mommdc The director of Residence Life is cutting screens and duct taping them in all the windows. that Williams be done early next week

Turning in now for an early morning. We rented the van and hope Dorm Mountain can be moved in one hour from an upstairs bedroom to the driveway. It has all come together.

But, I do have to say I’m having a wee sorrow when I see my own undergrad alma mater post move-in week pix on FB. D16 was accepted there, but picked the better school for her. Intellectually I understand that. Emotionally, I am letting go of the idea D16 would experience that wonderful college in an amazing locale, as I did. It’s OK. She’s headed to her own wonderful and amazing experiences.

She did tell the car rental guy she was “80 to 90 percent nervous” about heading to college. That percentage has gone up on her nervous/excited scale. I wonder if other kids are feeling that.

I’ve been using the Emory line (from above post) about college freshmen really being “high school students attending college” and not yet “college students.” It reframes it nicely for me, at least.

So, here we go!

@dyiu13 the percent of nervousness definitely increased- even through out move in day. Now I am terribly homesick and sad and I can’t sleep. Plus it’s hot and the blinds are not keeping out all the light from outside and there are so many sirens.

@readingclaygirl Hopefully you got some sleep. Things will look better in the light of day.

Hang in there @readingclaygirl ! Things always feel better in daylight. A friend told my DS that the first two weeks are hard but then it gets much easier. We are still here for you!

Any other parents having a hard time relaxing to this new phase of no college deadlines? I am trying to set other deadlines for myself since so many other things have had to wait around here but it still feels odd not to have the college “to do” list to consult each day, no kid to encourage/push/threaten, etc. i just need a little more time to adjust, I guess.

Thank you both @carolinamom2boys @Cheeringsection I’m sure you are right.

We are done with college deadlines but my focus has shifted to S19. School starts next week here so I have to do some back to school shopping with him this weekend. Big sis has been getting all the attention this summer so now it’s his turn.

Same boat @me29034 only DS19 has been in school since August 16. He’s adjusting well to getting all of the attention. DH and DS19 will be going to a football game tonight , and I will veg out.

@readingclaygirl, everything is new and you are not used to the new environment. I am glad they are putting in screens.
Hugs, it should get easier.

@dyiu13 - thank you for the time report! And yes, I completely know the feeling about watching move-in for your own school and the kid is going to a different place, and … being a different person.

BTW - I recommended CC to a niece of mine a bit over a year ago. She met a guy and messaged with him, and they started dating, and he was at a big family dinner with us last night! I said to him, “you know, this roast chicken and all the baby cousins, it’s all a big scam to steal your identity!” He looked like he didn’t exactly get my sense of humor.

@psychmomma , my S hates his u-lock too. Sounds like he’s replacing with a regular cable lock. So much for my research on the best lock :open_mouth:

And, like @me29034 and @carolinamom2boys we’re slowly shifting focus to S19. School starts a week from Tuesday, though with band camp he’s been kept busy this past week. Now if I can just get him to finish his summer reading >:P

@readingclaygirl hopefully you’ll sleep better soon, and I’m sure having screens will help! I thought D’s school was small, but your freshman class is even smaller than hers-by 50 students. Small classes/schools can be both a positive and a negative thing, as you’ll see. There are some options and opportunities at large schools that just won’t be possible for you (or D) but you’ll find that you’ll get to know most everyone very quickly.

What’s so different for me is that I’m not on the road all the time now. For middle and HS I drove D and picked her up in a nearby town, and in summers drove her and picked her up from whatever activities she had. Now I don’t need to get up as early, and after work I’m free for the rest of the day. Since I only work PT, there are only so many things I can do to keep busy. There’s a volunteer fair at our local library branch in September-I’ll be going. Also looking at other PT jobs or even a FT job in my skill set.

News from D: one of her education classes will be tutoring at a nearby program as part of the class. She’s very excited about that. Tonight there is a special youth service at her new church and the guest singer is someone whose song she has danced to in her praise dance group. Then later this year another singer will be visiting that she has danced to. This level of guest performers don’t get up to Seattle, so it’s pretty cool. On the downside, it seems that she was poorly placed in math and is meeting with her advisor about that today. As an ed major, she doesn’t HAVE to take a higher level class, but she wants to rip her hair out she is so bored, and the teacher actually asked if she’d peeked in the back of the book when she got an answer quickly yesterday. Um…no.
