Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

I know the CC company called my mom after we bought books online because the bookstore processed the order into 3 separate ones (new, used, rent) in like 2 minutes and that flagged it

I wonder if college textbooks are a particularly frequent purchase on stolen cards? Or if credit card companies do a check at that point to verify that kids are allowed to use a parent’s card?

It depends on a credit card company. I was not able to make a purchase in Boston with one of my cards. Had to use another instead. Five minutes after I left the store I got a text from that company asking to verify attempt to use this card in Boston. So before DD left for college I called that cc company and file a request that they allow translations in Boston. The request is only good for six months. I will have to call again after that. It is always a good idea to have more than one credit card available.

Most of my credit cards get disabled when I travel and start using them. For some reason Targets and I don’t get along and my credit cards get shut down the moment I try them there.

However, if you get an email and say yes, they open them up or calling usually helps. One other choice is to set traveling dates online for the cards.

Yes - I noticed that when I looked at my account online, you can put in travel dates - the period was a maximum of 6 months though.

I too am enjoying all the move in stories!

I moved S16 in this past Saturday…flew 3000 miles into Boston late Thursday night, shopped Friday, moved in Saturday, I flew 3000 miles back early Sunday. Whirlwind! No books needed for classes at his school (there will be an occasional exception), so haven’t had to deal with that ā€œheadacheā€.

Project based learning from day one instead of lecture halls and textbooks. He forewarned me last night there will be a ā€œtool listā€ to order on Amazon Prime shortly. His experience will be a bit different from most of your kiddos. Excited to see how it goes.

The text I received last night from him ended with ā€œI love it here!ā€. That definitely warmed my heart!

I’ve received my first ā€œI’m v stressed rnā€ text from D16. It seems that college classes have homework and it’s not just all picking up syllabi and hanging out and such. I’m afraid to ask her whether she has done laundry, because it’s been two weeks and I bet she hasn’t.

The last time I talked to her, she mentioned that she was actually planning to go to the CU-CSU football game in Denver tomorrow. I don’t think she’s ever seen more than 30 seconds of football in one sitting!

@4kids2graduate that school sounds like such a great place for some kids. D’s HS was project-based and most of the kids loved it. Even for non-STEM-Y kids it had great appeal. D is finding lectures a bit of a let-down. I have a friend with engineering in mind and I’m going to suggest O to her. Seems like it would be right up his ally.

I initially felt sad about the first weekend without our sweet girl until my hubby said ā€œSugar, she will be celebrating the holiday in the nations capital with all of her new friends.ā€ Not long after he said that she texted "hey momma, just wanted you and daddy to know I love you. I’ve got a busy day today so I’ll text again tomorrow :x "

That did it for me

Our kids are users on one of our credit cards, so they each have a card. It’s for emergencies or pre-approved (by a parent) purchases. We find it very convenient. Luckily, neither kid has broken the rules.

I chose a company where each user has their own account number. If one user’s card is shut down for a fraud alert, it’s just that one card that is closed, not all the cards/users.

Also, in the cc statement, it is broken out by card user, so it’s clear who charged what.

Haven’t heard from D a whole lot, but did get an ā€˜I love it here’ type text last night, so like @4kids2graduate said, it made my heart happy. I’m putting together a little package of things that got left behind, I’ll check in to see if she’s missing anything in particular before I send it. Otherwise, parent’s weekend is at the end of the month.

Doing well. Not procrastinating

Just checking in. Glad to hear all the good move in stories. I think I wrote before that our move in went fine. Then we left for a few days while S was in his pre-orientation program and went back for Convocation which was very well done. Went with S the next day to a math department open house where two professors told him he should not be in Calc. 2 but should take Calc. 3. Apparently, for freshmen who place into Calc. 3, they can drop back to Calc. 2 with no penalty after the first test if they decide it is a better fit. So S decided to do that. I thought it was good for him to have the interactions with these professors who clearly take an interest in the students.

We got back on Saturday to our now empty nest (except for the cats). S is still having some issues with his class selection (separate from calc) and adviser but I hope it will get sorted out and he’ll settle in this week. There are activities going on this weekend and I hope he makes the effort to sign up for a few. I think it will take him a little time to find his friend group but I’m sure it will happen. Missing him a lot and wishing he sounded happier. Of course, he does not want to spend time talking with us. {sigh}

I must be the odd one out of your kids. I speak to my mom everyday, usually more than once.

I usually get at least one text daily, usually to say goodnight and have had several phone conversations.

Received our first Cougar Alert today due to classes being cancelled for Hurricane Hermine. No evacuation yet. I have a plan in place. We have good friends in Mt Pleasant on stand by to pick him up
if they begin to evacuate . :frowning:

Praying for your S and everyone else in its path. @carolinamom2boys

^^^^ What @readingclaygirl said! Stay safe!

So permanent housing assignments came out today. DD and her 2 roommates decided to stay together in a triple. They were doing some furniture rearrangements today. Hopefully it will work out somehow. One of her roommate’s parents is arriving today for a long weekend so they will take girls for dorm shopping.

She loves her floor. Every floor at this dorm has its own culture. This floor is so her! With huge couches in a living room where large group of students hanging out late at night and having long discussions. If you feel like going to the party tonight, go few floors down to the party floor. They also have British floor, Jewish floor and many others.

We are supposed to head south with D18 and 3 of her friends for a birthday trip to an amusement park in VA, but of course the weather forecast turned from perfect to now a washout with the hurricane. We’re still planning on heading south since the hotel is booked, and of course I pre-ordered tix to the park to save $$. We may just be hanging out in the hotel, I guess.

But now I’m wondering if S16 will be okay since they are located on the eastern shore of MD - between the Chesapeake bay and Ocean City. They are not in a flood area as far as I know, but I guess the storm could make it pretty messy. I guess we’ll see how it goes - my guess is over the next 4 years this will happen more than once in the early fall :frowning: but of course I’d prefer it not be awful weather for his second weekend there!

My sister had her first in person class today it was supposed to last 9-10:20 but the power went out and the college closed so she got out at 9:50. There were some people who came to campus and had all their classes cancelled

No such thing at that school. They will be working their heads off on psets all night.
