Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

We live in SC and start on Tues and are done the first week in June unless we have to make up snow days . Yes, it does snow in SC. We had 4 or 5 last year. I have the feeling this year is going to fly by.

Ohio here. We started yesterday and will get out the Thursday before Memorial Day. The calendar gives them every Friday off in May for extra snow days.

@4kids2graduate D is not ready for school to start or for her last year. She is my only child and even though she is getting ready for this college process she really wants to savor every minute at home. I may really start getting sentimental on you guys before the year is over. :frowning:

Our school starts Aug 24th and ends the last week of May. Graduation is on May 27th. D shouldn’t have any finals because she’ll (hopefully) be in all AP classes. She has her last AP exam on Monday May 9th. Her DE classes end May 13th. The end is in sight!

Sep. 10 is the first day of DD’s school and commencement will be held on June 17th. Other grade will continue for final exam until June 24th. I am not sure how many snow day will extend the schedule. Anyway, I always wish my daughter’s school starts a little earlier.

We start back in a week and a half. I’m trying not to drown the kids in college essays the end of their senior summers, but it looks like they’re more than capable themselves of making that happen.
S has his driving test next week. I have every expectation that it won’t be as easy as he thinks it will be.
@Sophmore1 , I’ll be getting weepy right along with you. I don’t have an only (counting the older steps, far from it), but I cry at the drop of a hat.

Here are news on FAFSA starting next year

Schools in Houston are mostly starting on 24th.

It’s the first day of senior year here so time to join you all! I have a DS, hoping to major in computer science. Typical boy–finished his summer reading last night.

Welcome @Almondjoy1!

We start on Sept. 2, but some area districts start at the end of August. I’m not sure when graduation is, but senior project presentations are June 1 and 2, so graduation will be a few days later. The date is set by the district as all the schools have to use the same arena for graduation. They make up a schedule.

You know, I’ve replied to a few posts lately, but they don’t seem to be showing up. Excuse me while I see if this posts!

Classes at the school start next Wednesday. She only has orchestra there. Her college course (Mamdarin) starts on the 24th. Everything else is homeschooled. The online courses start late August, I think.

Ambitious day for S16 today.

We’re on the east coast visiting family, while he’s spent the last four days in Pismo Beach, CA with six other boys, on their own at a beachside hotel. They’re a mix of rising seniors and new HS grads heading off to college – this was the ‘farewell’ trip for the kids who are leaving. Today they’re driving back to the Bay Area, where my son will take BART to the airport and catch a red eye flight to D.C., connecting there to a different flight to Portland, ME.

We’re cautiously optimistic that he might actually be here tomorrow morning.

@Almondjoy1 – warmest welcome. Don’t be bashful.

Welcome to the party @Almondjoy1

I see your last post @AKFirefly

@asleepatthewheel safe travels for your son!

Welcome @almondjoy !

You are way braver than I am @AsleepAtTheWheel ! I would not sleep the entire time he was away with the guys. I see college as his opportunity to have all kinds of experiences that I do not need to necessarily know, or worry, about. :-"

Welcome @ almondjoy My son is also a rising senior who wants to major in computer science . What area is he looking in?

Carolina mom–area of the country? All over. Fortunately DH travels a lot so we have been using frequent flier miles and hotel nights to visit colleges.
He’s mostly looking at urban/suburban schools for internship/ work possibilities.

Welcome @Almondjoy1 !Just in time for the fun part!
I can see you @AKFirefly . But I guess now we know where to find the Cloak of Invisibility should it be needed (I’m thinking maybe to crash a couple of adcoms’ meetings
).
@AsleepAtTheWheel, S traveled without me earlier this month and managed to make it back home only a day later than intended, despite the airline’s best efforts. It’s good experience for when they go away to college and fly solo regularly. At least, that was my story to Mr. Petrichor.

@Cheeringsection – we didn’t worry about the boys in terms of alcohol, drugs, or sex. Just not their style. But we did worry about them diving off of piers, rolling over an ATV, or crashing two jet skis. Fortunately he’s on his way to the airport, so those worries are done. And FWIW, S14 has finished one year of school away, and I still worry about him making poor decisions when he’s surrounded by too many other knuckleheads.

@petrichor11 – my wife wanted to know what I was laughing about when I read your note. I told her that what Mr. Petrichor doesn’t know won’t hurt him. . . So far his flights are on time.

Welcome @almondjoy.

@AsleepAtTheWheel I would not be able to sleep until he arrived.
