Thanks. I texted D to double check just to make sure. Our HS does not use Naviance, so it would have to be directly through the Common Ap. For D’s first application submitted, it was not on the common application, so she requested a transcript and was given a sealed paper document to mail to the university (and we paid $2.00 for the transcript).
Does anyone’s school use Parchment for transcript sending, and how has that gone for you. They made my son sign up for Parchment when he picked up his class schedule this year and told him that all transcripts would go through that website. We don’t have Naviance at his school.
After several episodes of nagging, yelling, screaming, begging, pleading, and bribery, D finally finished and submitted 8 applications (6 EA and 2 RD). SAT and ACT scores were sent as well. Four or 5 more colleges to go. She already has 2 acceptance letters, both public safeties with good scholarships.
A question for those who have already gone through this process with older kids. So, what exactly is a CSS and are we supposed to get something from the private colleges before we start working on it? Do you have to do it for each school or once for all, just like the Common Application?
Thank you in advance.
A riff off what crowlady wrote about a top student who only got into her safety because she had no matches, am I a bad mom because I secretly hope for that? I think it is why I am not pressing my D regarding deadlines, LOR, essays, etc. I feel her safety will allow her to standout as a superstar while still challenging her and saving a ton of money. I’m really worried she will get into a college she covets, but the aid won’t be there.
As for my fabulous husband, I often think of the scene from The Incredibles when all h*ll is breaking lose at the dinner table and the mom says, “Bob! It’s time to engage!” Our level of intensity about the college process is definitely different.
@palm715 Wow! you must be talking about my husband. He went to his 3rd camping trip last weekend since applications started. I think he wants to be away from all the stress!! [-(
DD has few deadlines next few days even though she had sent no application. She’s submitting for writing competition which deadline is Oct. 16th. She said she’s going to submit two categories leaving her to write up to 40 pages. Her NMF application will be sent out in Oct. 19th. She also has an interview on Oct. 18th.
I am trying not to ask about applications because every student in her school prepares for college and she is fully aware of application deadlines and other stuff. But… still it’s impossible to ignore fully.
@lonetreegrad the CSS Profile is a financial aid form used by a lot of private schools. You don’t need anything from the schools to fill it out, just your own financial information. It’s available on the College Board website. And yes, It is like the Common App in that you only have to fill it out once and then send it to schools of your choice (there’s a charge for each one, although I don’t remember how much).
I think some H’s just deal with things differently. They figure it will all work out and know that our stressing and nagging will be enough, that neither the kids nor they need to stress anymore, that we have it all covered. And then they go watch football or something.
I’d be lying if I didn’t say that a part of me would be happy for D to choose on of the in-state safeties so that we could see her more often, but I know that isn’t what she wants, isn’t the best option for her “50-year plan” to come to fruition, so I don’t tell her that. So no, palm, you’re not alone.
What we’ve told D from Day 1 is that her list had to include only colleges that she would be willing to attend, and that she needed to understand that a list of mostly out-of-state, mostly private colleges meant that she might end up at one of those in-state safeties, so she’d better choose wisely. Her list includes several colleges that give out very generous merit for her stats, but no super reaches. They don’t appeal to her and the likelihood of getting in is so small, she just opted out. I’m still hoping for an automatic admission this weekend at the college fair. I would love it all to be one and done!
Yes, @dyiu13 13 submitted applications is very impressive as is the 4 acceptances…here’s hoping the remaining 9 come in as acceptances! I have to say we at our house are a little envious of being done with applications. We are set to pull the trigger on four or five more EA applications this weekend but the five or six more are RD and some need extensive supplemental essays and / or questions answered so they will be done closer to Thanksgiving, I would imagine. Our goal is to have the entire process wrapped up before Thanksgiving so we will have even more to be thankful for (less stress and peace…LOL)!
Yes, common app, except for one, which has its own portal to check. And that one doesn’t require recs, other than the GC, so that’s an easy one.
@4kids2graduate Thanks for the kudos, but honestly, everything I do I’ve learnt from CC!
@texaspg S’s first choice is a lottery school. He’s a good candidate, has shown interest, has great recs, all the boxes are ticked…but y’know…lottery school. What I keep telling him is that he’s the best candidate we can possible create-- but there are probably 25,000 applicants for 2000 spots, and he needs to have a Plan B (and C, D, E, F…)
@LKnomad No Parchment, no Naviance. We’re in the Stone Age here.
Applying to all instate institutions because of great state scholarships that he has qualified for . I gave him the option of applying to OOS schools that would give him good merit , but he has no interest . I’m very thankful there are good instate options. The only reaches he’s applying to are financial reaches. He’s also applying to 3 Honors Colleges with one of them having 5 additional essays and an optional statement. Thank goodness he’s only applying to 5 schools total. Tomorrow is college application day at school . He’s completing his last regular app tomorrow at school. The school is encouraging students to wear collegiate attire. There will be reps from all of the schools he’s applying to there. Any recommendations on which shirt to wear?
@AsleepAtTheWheel: is this Spock strategy successful for you? @carolinamom2boys: I bet the college reps will be taking notes. I vote neutral. Or Duke (kidding!!).
