Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

As a Clemson alum, I would recommend Clemson of course.

WOOOHOOOO!!! Just heard from the rolling admissions school. He is in and with scholarship it is at, or below, the cost of his in state options. It REALLY changes the stress level around here to have an affordable option in writing. DH and I have agreed previously that we will require DS to have at least one in state option so he still has 1 or 2 applications to do, but I think the other 2 just fell off the list. =D> :D/

@Cheeringsection Super Awesome on you S’s acceptance! Glad the stress level will ease now! It’s time to celebrate!

Congratulations @Cheeringsection You all must be thrilled especially your S!

Congrats @Cheeringsection . Hopefully many more to come. Was this an instate school? I’m very envious.

OOS private. I always tell folks not to assume the in-state publics are their only option.

@cheeringsection - congratulations.

Cheers to @Cheeringsection! Yahoo!

Congrats @cheeringsection Let’s celebrate! Drinks for everyone! (I can afford to be a virtual big spender, lol.)

At our S’s school the seniors have college fair while everyone else takes the PSAT. S’s first choice (Temple) will be there, and I hold out a little hope they can give him a better idea how they weight GPA. Don’t know that admissions reps can do that, though. We’ll also get an idea of whether S18 might have a shot at making NMSF next year.

@mstomper That would make perfect sense. Instead, our seniors have some kind of assembly about drugs and alcohol. (Which probably a few of their classmates could present.) I’d suggest they steal your school’s idea, but all the guidance counselors are busy proctoring the PSAT.

@grlscoutmom I emailed the GC for clarification about what she completes in the common app, and what we have to do separately (ie: request a transcript be sent, etc.). Our school also does not use Naviance or anything similar. This was her reply:

Here are the items that I completed for your son’s Common App:

  1. School Report
  2. Counselor Report (including letter of recommendation)
  3. Digital transcript upload
  4. Current class schedule PDF upload
(she also said she will complete the mid-year report after Semester 1 and the final report after graduation and transcripts are finalized for common app)

At my school all 10th and 11th graders take the PSATs, freshman do some diversity and team building workshops and seniors do college workshops. And then in the afternoon, there is some kind of assembly.

Our kids are just glad they don’t have homework (except S18 is supposed to watch the debate for AP NSL). Both wanted to watch the debate anyway.

@Mom2jI Another question. When is the good time to complete CSS? D16 has submitted 8 applications so far with 2 acceptances. She will be submitting 4 or 5 more applications in the next few weeks. Most of these are private schools, some very selective. The CSS form asks for information regarding your tax form 2015 (if completed) OR 2014. Our financial situation is very different now than 2014, but we haven’t filled our taxes for 2015.
If we wait until closer to Jan to complete the form, would it influence the decision from some schools (eg, EA colleges)?

@Cheeringsection – Well, that was quite a turnaround within 24 hours. Congratulations. It’s wonderful that everyone can now take a deep(er) breath and relax.
One question: Are you sure that it’s a good idea for those two last applications to “fall off the list”? Presumably they were on the list originally for a reason. If they’re less desirable in every conceivable way than the school to which he was just admitted, it makes sense to drop them. But if they offer anything different that at some point even might make one of them preferable, or if they might be a better deal financially (?due to an unexpectedly good merit scholarship), dropping them entirely simply because your son doesn’t want to do the work and/or you don’t want to harass might be unwise. He (and you) have done so so much over the past 3+ years to put him in the best possible position vis-a-vis college applications/admissions. It could be a shame to leave these two last stones unturned without a good reason. You can pitch it to him by saying that all the pressure is off, that he can just sit down and do these apps without any worries. . . Just sayin’

Also, your point is extremely well-taken that OOS schools with merit can trump in-state tuition schools, but one never knows if one doesn’t do the research and then apply.

Again, congrats.

At D’s school there will be a senior movie event during the PSAT. They wear their pajamas, etc. At S19’s school 9th graders tour a college campus and seniors will work on their applications/portfolios.

There will be a mandatory HIV/AIDS workshop for seniors at my D’s school while 10-11th grade take PSAT. Still no class and homework.

College essay and stress management workshops at DD school tomorrow.

Tomorrow is a minimum day at my school so in my class seniors will do a lab activity while the juniors take the PSAT, unless I can get a conversation about college going
