Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Just checked College Board again. The scores that was ordered on October 18th is still pending too!! That is a long time. I wonder what happens to kids that submit their EA applications and order scores on the last day!

I checked CB again today and saw that the scores that we ordered before the test have been sent. The scores we ordered after the test, including those ordered Oct 4 before the deadline for free score reports, all show as pending.

@cheeringsection Sorry to hear about your son’s illness. It really is not at all surprising. This is such a stressful time. For us, it is last week of quarter, last week before Nov 1 deadlines, a week with major sports events to watch – ok, I don’t think that’s a priority but apparently hubby and son think so. And oh, there’s a math team tournament too.

@palm715 Try not to freak out. My experience has been that colleges are understanding and don’t hold high schools, counselors, and letter-writers to the same hard deadlines as long as your student submits their part by the deadline.

That said, we’ve been waiting for an LOR for weeks now. Teacher now says she’s handled all but one or two that need to be mailed, but I don’t see any sign in Naviance or Common App that the LOR exists. I hate to keep nagging, and I’m wondering if there’s some technical glitch. Or do we give it a couple of days to show up?

On the bright side, GC is now on maternity leave but took care of all of her part before she left AND she’s even more responsive by email than she was before. But I don’t want to bother her with this – will probably have to call the guidance office.

I just called CB because scores I ordered on Oct. 22 are still pending. I was told they are being processed, with delivery guaranteed between tomorrow and 11/5. It’s too late to rush at this point. The ED school has a deadline of 11/2 for everything on the website. One school has said not to worry about delays but that’s an EA school that already has the SAT I and doesn’t require subject tests. Having worked in admissions at an independent school, I believe the only hard deadline is the student portion of the app, but it still makes me nervous. I do think if this is a problem with CB across the board, colleges will be understanding.

@palm715, just to calm your nerves, as a teacher who writes LoR’s, it is not uncommon for us to wait til the last minute to get them submitted. S submitted is EA application today and we are still waiting on one more teacher to get their LoR in… now that I am on this side of the application process I now understand how stressful this can be and wont wait to the last minute again.

@AnxietyAttack77 CB told me that they have contacted colleges and told them about the delay.

WA is another state in which the public colleges have deadlines in late Jan. or Feb. My older D applied to one In my home state with rolling admissions and a deadline sometime in May. I think those who go after Nov 1 deadlines are very, very driven and not the norm at all. Many of D’s friends have not even taken the SAT or ACT yet. Our state colleges (at least the ones I’m familiar with) don’t require them for admission.

@sseamon…except for UW, which is 12/1 (was just looking at deadlines for apps in progress with daughter last night  )

DD submitted a few EA applications and 3 regular decision schools several days ago (last on Oct 22nd). I am glad she submitted her SAT I scores a few days before she submitted the applications, so all of the schools (except one) have those scores. She ordered her SAT II score on Oct 23rd, those are still pending.

So for those who have already gone through this with older kids, how are you supposed to submit the regular decision applications due Jan 1st or Jan 15th, when high schools are closed for the holidays for over 2 weeks right before the deadline? In D’s high school, you cannot submit a request for the transfer of transcripts/LORs until you have submitted the applications. It takes the school 2-3 weeks to submit these documents, so if the last day of school is Dec 18th, the kids have to submit their applications the latest Dec 1st. So, how are so many kids wait until the last day (end of Dec) to submit their applications?

In addition, it seems that College Board gets very busy 1-2 weeks before the deadlines which is around the Dec Holiday, so does that mean Dec 1st is also a good deadline for SAT requests?

Hopefully, this is not too confusing. There are so many December 1st deadlines (eg, scholarships, Honors college), I am worried that adding the regular decision applications, transcript requests, and SAT scores, as well, as the finals will make the next 4-5 weeks extremely stressful for all of our kids. #:-S

You’re right, GG. But I think for most of the others it’s into the new year.

@lonetreegrad I would have your D submit applications before the holiday break and to advise GC in person (and follow up with email as precaution) of her intention to submit her list of RD applications. My D did this with her GC and I followed up with an email detailing each school that she was submitting just to make sure that we were all on the same page. I would not (if at all possible) leave any applications to be submitted on or about their due dates. It just leave too much to chance and possible problems. Many of the schools prefer getting them earlier too by notating Priority Due Dates. I know this may mean more pressure for your D to get everything ready sooner but at least the schools part will be completed in time so she is not waiting on them when they are off. Good luck.

@lonetreegrad at our school, you need to submit your requests at least 3 weeks before the deadline and all Jan 1st requests need to be in 4 weeks ahead. This really messes with the ā€˜we’re extending our deadline just for you’ schools or anything you want to add in December or over winter break. Last year S15 added a school at the end and basically had to beg to have his app stuff sent in as soon as he got back to school. It is always a good idea to have SAT/ACT scores sent as soon as you decide to apply. College Board seems to run pretty slowly at the end of the year.

Thank you @Ivmkac1 and @MuggleMom D is relieved that a few of her applications are done, but with one more subject test to take in November, and all the other applications and scholarships, she is worried that she wouldn’t make it to the December 1st deadline. I am glad that I have been helping her, but I have been worried for her.

Thanks @crowlady and @carolinamom2boys. I think he is improving. Still sounds awful (coughing and such) but his voice is back. It is amazing what sleep can do. I think he did the right thing by staying home before it totally knocked him down. No application work but he is doing hw at least

@Cheeringsection I too hope your S is feeling better. My D was home 2 days last week with a similar situation (and only returned because she was more worried about what she was falling behind in rather than how horrible she still felt). It was very worrisome with AP class homework and classwork piling up and additional application & scholarship supplemental essays to complete…not to mention making it into the post season for varsity soccer! Not that we are unhappy about that, but it just puts more pressure on catching up and finishing up her every persistent and continuing to lengthen to do list!

Thanks, @crowlady & @Mysonsdad. To confirm, I can tell my D it is OK to hit submit on the common app without the counselor’s LOR and school profile, if it comes down to it? Does the late material still get to colleges after the initial submit?

@Mysonsdad, my husband is a high school teacher too. Here in Hawaii they have a large private school system just for kids with Hawaiian ancestry. We do not have any Hawaiian blood so my kids can’t go , but my H loves teaching there. As a math and computer science teacher, he dreads writing LORs since that’s not his forte, but he is still pleased to be asked.

@palm715 You do not need to wait for the school’s parts to submit the student part of the CA https://appsupport.commonapp.org/link/portal/33011/33013/Article/90/Submit-app-before-recommendations

I’ve posted on the Class of 2019 thread about this, but that thread is nowhere near as active as this one , and I know there is abundance of knowledge on this thread. DS19 is currently taking geometry honors and has recently began struggling with the subject matter. It’s been over 30 years since I’ve had geometry , so I’m not very helpful. DS16 has been trying to help him, but that just makes him more overwhelmed . To be honest DS16 has enough on his plate that I’d like to keep him out if the equation( no pun intended )
Does anyone have any suggestions for online resources or the best way to find a tutor . I’ve got a call into his teacher for some more guidance , but open to any suggestions.

@carolinamom2boys Search for ā€œKahn academyā€ and ā€œgeometryā€ – Kahn academy has good free videos. We never used them for math but they are worth a try. Your HS will likely have a list of local tutors. Often teachers at another school will tutor students, and at our school National Honor Society upperclassmen get service hours for tutoring. Finally, there are some online services that will connect you with local tutors. We got a pretty good one from Wyzant. Best of luck! (I was a geometry tutor myself as a HS senior)

Thanks@crowlady

@Palm715, that is what I did. The last teacher who I am waiting for an LoR teaches a class just for seniors applying to college and he told me to go ahead and submit, I don’t need his letter to do it. Fwiw, S submitted today and about an hour later I was in the room of the other teacher he was asking an LoR from and watched as she submitted hers. So yes, you can submit without the teacher or counselor LoR. Here are the instructions from the site of a school…

ā€œCOMPLETE the Common Application and the Stanford Questions; invite and assign your recommenders before submitting your application.
ASK your counselor and teachers to submit all of their documents online whenever possible.ā€
