@carolinamom2boys my homeschooling son uses www.thinkwell.com for math, which also has a non homeschool option. The cost is low and the professor who does the explaining in the videos is clear and entertaining. There are exercises that can be done online.
D passed her drivers test yesterday. 11/1 apps still not completed. Sheās currently crafting her Halloween costume for school tomorrow. She gets extra credit for dressing up from a teacher that loves Halloween. Priorities? Send wine!
Just today, GC told D she could submit her CA and that the school report and LOR would follow. Apparently, the school report was just revised, so GC has to go into all of the studentsā CAās to change them. What a pain.
DD said sheās done with CA essay⦠finally. She sent out SAT scores to every college in her list with rush service. One of her EA school said it must arrive before Nov. 1st. So it will be interesting to see the result while the school is match-safety school. I also have to ask her to send another e-mail for supplementary LOR from her summer program professor. I am slightly worry about it because sheās going to send it by snail mail.
There is a list of schools she will be happy to attend so I try to reduce her stress to apply college. In the end, prestige of college does not matter. Fit is more important and as long as a college lead DD to her career goal, it is enough.
Naviance says that LOR from her school is completed and initial material were sent to EA schools.
We love Khan Academy over here, and itās FREE, and also tied into SAT practice, should it be needed. D has used it as suggested/required by various teachers since 6th grade. Whether to provide additional practice, better explanations than in school, or as homework, itās always been helpful, especially since there is always more than one type of help offered-video, graphics, etc. More than once itās pulled D through a patch of struggle, and it goes all the way from basic addition to college-level math.
D had late arrival at school today, so she did another application. The essay was to be a short bio, and she read it to me-I thought it captured her very well. She did have trouble finding an example of a āsmall projectā that sheād done because she does so many large-scale things! She also got a fee waiver because the link for the online payment wasnāt working. The recommendations are already on their way as are the text scores. She has another one ready to go, but the online version wonāt let her upload the essay, saying it has too many characters, though it beats the word count by 50 words or so. Sheās going to call tomorrow and ask why that is and what she should do.
@sseamom , I was just being kind of silly with my ācorrectionā post
All these dates are starting to run together! It did strike me though that UW has a pretty narrow app windowā¦10/1-12/1. When my older daughter was applying, I was quite uninvolved, so the various deadlines are new to me. Iām pretty amazed that she pulled that app together, but glad she did, because itās been a good fit.
Thanks @sseamom and everyone else who offered great suggestions. Once again , CC to the rescue.
Anyone applying ED to U Roch?
@carolinamom2boys we also rely on Kahn academy as well as another good online help for math subjects is ā ā ā ā ā ā ā ā ā ā . ā ā ā ā ā ā ā ā ā ā goes by the textbook that the student is using and gives detailed instruction on solving each problem. I hope that helps. If those 2 options are not sufficient, I always resort to getting a tutor. Its hard on the student when they are having difficulty in a subject. I wish your S all the best in overcoming this challenge. With my D is was Algebra in 8th grade. She had a horrible teacher who contributed to her feeling not confident in her abilities and we had to resort to all of the options discussed here, Kahn, older sibling assistance and a tutor to get her through. Thankfully, she made it through well but it ended up to leave her feeling less confident going into Algebra II/Trig later on. She was blessed to have a very strong teacher for that subject and she did extremely well. The only remaining issue from that fretful year is a lingering lack of confidence in math regarding testing (no matter how well prepared she isā¦and it showed in her Math scores in all her SAT and SAT II testing which are no where indicative of her ability in the subject). This is her one less than stellar item in her applications and she continually stresses that her math scores will prohibit her from being accepted at her dream school(s).
@grlscoutmom congrats to your D for passing her driving test! Another milestone accomplished! Hopefully 11/1 apps will get done timely and if not hopefully submitting RD wonāt have her losing any merit consideration. My D has one more app to complete for that deadline and I am feeling the stress building but trying to keep it to myself - send wine this way tooā¦LOL! Not sure if submitting RD will affect any merit consideration for my D but she has completed 6 EA applications, if one falls through the crack and has to go RD, I guess its not that big of a deal. I am just a deadline, timetable person and would prefer to know most of Dās options earlier rather than April 1stā¦but there are only so many balls we make these kids juggle at a time and if one EA application goes RD instead that is a worst case scenario I can live with. :x
@lvmjac1 Thanks for your suggestion. The situation with your daughter is exactly the one Iām trying to avoid. His self esteem has already taken a hit. Itās amazing how bad situations stick with you. When I was in eighth grade my science teacher humiliated me in front of my class during my science fair presentation . From then on , I suffered from extreme test anxiety with Science. That was quite debilitating considering I am now an Occupational Therapist, a career that was loaded with science including physics, kinesiology, gross anatomy and biology. Hopefully we can get over this hump. Thanks again.
@carolinamom2boys with the support from you I am sure your S will overcome this hurdle! My D is doing better but the ramifications have become part of her. And in the end I believe it will help her to become a better person going forward as it obviously has with you! You worked through your challenge to become an OT and with your support your S will no doubt work through and become who he is meant to be. I truly believe we grow from our struggles and of course as parents we would like to take away these difficulties from our children but I have started to see that as time goes on - it makes them better for itā¦in the long run of course (in the short run its definite hell for them and us!).
Not that I support doing things last minuteā¦but it seems to be the norm in this household with the college application process. Sometimes intentional, sometimes due to too many things being juggled at the same time.
Regarding sending test scoresā¦I just went back and looked at dates tests were ordered, and date sent to colleges (on SAT or ACT site). Our experience this fall is that ACT scores are sent the SAME day as ordered (showed this all 3 times we ordered), and SAT scores varied between order date and date scores being sent (3 days, 4 days, 5 days and 7 days).
I can certainly identify with the algebra travails. I needed tutoring to pull out a D- in Algebra II. S18 seems to be doing pretty well in that class, although he had some trouble with Geometry. S16 got a 5 on the AP Calculus BC exam, but Iām confident he wasnāt switched with another kid at the hospital. I got him to send his SAT scores to Temple last night since the EA deadline is 11/1. Iāll see if I can prod him to press the button on the application tonight. I think heās definitely decided after visiting thatās where heās going if he gets one of the top 2 scholarships. Heās still going to apply to Ole Miss, because he wants to have the sure tuition/room scholarship in his back pocket.
Add my D to the math issues group. Her ACT subscores are all in the 26-30 rangeā¦except her math. Seventeen, bay-bees. Thank you, third and eighth grade math teachers.
@carolinamom2boys D has used Kahn Academy quite a bit for math and Crash Course videos by John Green for history, sciences and econ. She found them to be very helpful. I count myself as extremely math challenged, math phobic, etc. Fortunately, my kids didnāt inherit my faulty math gene. Good luck to DS19. I feel his pain.
@lvmjac1 it looks like D will pull the trigger on one 11/1 application and has decided to push the other two until RD. Thankfully, she wonāt lose out on merit scholarship consideration. She retook the ACT just last week and wants to see that score before submitting the other two applications. The college app she will submit by (on!!!) 11/1 superscores, and itās reachy. D does have a few 11/15 deadlines that she must complete for scholarship consideration. Our initial thinking was it would be better to get back admission results as soon as possible, but it will be what it will be.
@grlscoutmom I completely agree āit will be what it will beā! In the end there is only so much that can be done and then you have to hope for the best.
@carolinamom2boys, we found Khan academy kind of overwhelming to navigate. There are lots of other tutors who post on YouTubeā¦we especially liked the short videos offered by PatrickJMT (just math tutoring). Do a search for him on YouTube and see what you think. There was also a teacher who posted under āYay Mathā who was very engaging and explained things well. Certainly if my kids had had more math teachers like him, perhaps they would have struggled less.
Thanks @GoldenWest and everyone who has been so responsive. Yāall are an amazing group of people.
Do you put summer activities for the summer between 11th and 12th grade under 11th or 12th grade? I know for UCs it is 11th, since they are not consider 9th or 12th grade for admission. What about other schools?
Ugh! D had an interview at 4 PM. I gave DH the wrong address of the coffee shop. He dropped her off and left. She waited 15 minutes for interviewer and then called her to find out where she was. I guess there are 2 coffee shops with the same name a mile apart. Since D didnāt have a car, the interviewer decided to drive to Dās coffee shop. She was already nervous since this school is one of her top choices and it is very selective. I guess we have to forget about this college! Hopefully, the interviewer was not too upset!! Poor D!!
